I've been wanting to laser some glasses as gifts or to sell for a long time, and finally got some time to make that happen. I also wanted to push the limits of my new Roller Rotary from rotaryattachments.com/?wpam_id=2 By picking 4 glasses from the local Dollar Tree Store I was able to test four ways to laser glass and make money with my laser. The glasses were $1. That leaves a lot of room for charging to customize. The methods I used are wet paper towel/wet newspaper, masking tape, dish detergent, and glass laser tape.

Nice, Chad! I've been experimenting with laser etching glass too and I'm getting really frustrated. My papertowel seems to dry out before the engraving is done. I've used black paper on both the inside and outside of the glass. Used rattle can cold galvanizing spray (cleanup sucks). Rattle can enamel (works well but cleanup still sucks). Dish soap. 3-in-1 oil. Stick on black pressure sensitive vinyl (HUGE mess). Still trying. You seem to have had good luck though!

TK Skagen I’ve done that as well as sandblasting and love the finish. That said I detest applying the vinyl and clean up afterword. Even for one this is much quicker. You eliminate all the work after sending the image to the printer whether that printer is a vinyl cutter or a laser.

I have tried a lot of methods for engraving on glass and went back to not sing anything special when I engrave. I do a lot of glasses for local bars and breweries and they all come out great. After we laser the image with use a a scuff pad with water to remove any sharp edges there may be. Works for us especially when we are doing orders of 100 or more glasses at a time. We did try transfer tape but the result was the same as without it but it took us forever to pick out those little pieces of tape :-)
@ManCrafting

Thanks for the input. What kind of scuff pad are you using?

@@ManCrafting www.amazon.com/dp/B079JWGDN9/ref=psdc_15754811_t1_B006WQJ0SE. They are very light duty scuff pads that are used in the bars around here. Since we also do a lot of custom pen turning we also use micro mesh 8000 grit abrasive pads, as well as extra fine finishing pads. All with water. Since a laser does not really engrave glass, it does micro chipping, you have glass fragments left behind sometimes. We also use a lot of air to help with dispersing the chips.

This video is thorough with the details of the various methods. Good job overall! I don’t own a laser, so I actually don’t know why you can’t just etch glass without some extra treatment. It’s probably obvious to you, but there may be others interested in a video explaining why you are doing this test in the first place. To my knowledge, lasers see glass as opaque, but maybe that’s incorrect information. Thanks!
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 4 жыл бұрын
You can. Depending on the glass, varying results. The laser isn’t Abrasive it’s shattering. So these methods minimize the shards and how rough the end result turns out.

@@ManCrafting I recently went through some similar tests on my k40. I found the dishsoap was highly dependant on me getting it evenly spread out. slight differences in teh thickness of the soap made a difference in teh final engraving. I also found similar with wet paper towel. need to be carefule to get it nice and flat over the whole area, any wrinkles effect the final. In the end I found just dialing in my power settings, and using a dithering to reduce the 'resolution' helped the most and meant I could just etch straight against the glass for great results, zero cleanup.
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 4 жыл бұрын
@@MakerGeek Looks like I have some more testing to do. Great tips. Rather than dithering have you tried just being slightly out of focus? The unfortunate thing with glass is it's not consistent from product to product. If I have a great setting for one item it may not be great for another.

I’m sure there’s a lot of factors. The power. The glass. But understand. When the glass is heated it’s breaking. That can leave a rough surface. This seems to reduce that. For $1 a glass it doesn’t hurt to try it your self. You can learn a lot for $1 etching multiple times on one glass.

Hello I've been laser engraving glass for quite a while and one of the tricks I use especially with optic crystal awards (say) and a customer that wants a sandblasted look is to buy a product from JDS or Marco or PDU, Johnson Plastics etc called Laser Tape. What you would do is apply the tape to the glass (make sure there are little or no bubbles, then laser the glass through the tape at a setting of maybe 25 speed and 85 power on a 40 watt laser. Then for very little money you can buy a sandblasting chamber, a small compressor and a spray gun to put in a sandblasting compound. Then tape off the glass so when you sandblast the text or logo you wont hit an uncovered part of the glass. Just a light sandblast will do and once you take off that laser tape you'll end up with a beautiful 'frosty white engraving. It's really very simple. Check it out..it's called Laser Tape. Thanks for the video! Jim
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 4 жыл бұрын
I actually used laser tape in the video and may have used it incorrectly. Not a lot of info with the product. I used it as a scan rather than cutting a template for sandblasting. Either way, I’ve sandblasted a lot of things including cups and glass. Personally I’d rather use my laser even though the finish is better with abrasives. You know how it is. When you have a hammer, everything is a nail.

Nice video, I'm just wondering why do you have to cover it with tape or tissue when you can directly engrave to the glass. You only use masking tape if you intend to sandblast it afterwards, cause sandblast will have a way better and cleaner result.
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 4 жыл бұрын
The tape or tissue is intended to give the lasered glass a finish closer to a sandblasted glass. Some people have lasers and don’t have a sand blaster is one reason, the second is the process using a laser should be quicker.

Go check out AeonLaser.us I think you’ll find that it’s a really nice platform. Also the rotary that they sell is identical except for color that I used in this video. Let me know what you think. Feel free to email me if you have questions. ManCrafting101@gmail.com

This was a 100w. I believe I used 12-15 power at 350 speed. You really need to test each glass to get the best settings. Glass isn’t all the same. It all engraves differently.

Your information is great...some interesting ideas and techniques ... I have the rotary attachment on a 40 watt laser machine...I can design and have an image to laser no problem...my issue is what I see is not what I get ... circle sometimes are great the letter is squeezed together. Made some glasses and had to print a dummy and the second one was good ... reset...turn off software and machine... and start all over ... any ideas would be great I am using laserdraw

I’m not sure what inside would do. The laser is fracturing the glass. You’re intention is to minimize that effect and make the effect smoother. Also thanks for watching from Cost Rica. I’d love to have a second home there.

We use wet newspaper pretty much exclusively (on our 45w epilog), every couple of months we stop by our local newspaper and get their roll ends for dirt cheap, $5-10 lasts us months. If you use regular newspaper your ink can leech into the engraving and it takes some time to clean it out which is annoying. I'm not a fan of using tapes, too annoying to clean for me. We fold it up, cut it into squares with a utility knife (4 cuts and you have 50 pieces), then put them in a bowl with water in it to let them get as soaked as possible
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 4 жыл бұрын
Garrett N I suppose if you have access to that material that would be great. It’s good to know about the ink transfer. That would be a pain. I use all our newspaper mailers for the bird cage so I wouldn’t have any for laser. I like the soaking idea and I’ll cut it down in the future.

Wow, that was most interesting to watch! I am thinking about buying a laser engraver for GLASS. I understand that since the material is transparent the soap or tape thing is what makes this possible. Question: If you engrave on e.g. dark blue glass/crystal, could you do that directly with a good result?
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 3 жыл бұрын
You buy it for glass and realize you can use it on powder coated tumblers, anodized items, tools, leather goods, acrylic, wood, tile, and more. I’m not sure about blue glass. I’m sure it would look great, but I’d probably put soap on the area to be etched at a minimum.
@pantoglasses637
@pantoglasses637 3 жыл бұрын
@@ManCrafting thank you for the good answer. yes, theprocess with the soap looks very interesting eand easy. There are some new lasers marketing intensively on FB, with a "Ultra-fast 5W laser engraver" that claims to engrave even glass. Would that be possible?
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 3 жыл бұрын
@@pantoglasses637 that’s a great question. Mine is 100w and I’m using about 35% of that for 25% of that or 25 Watts. That said. It may be something other than a CO2 laser. I’d definitely check with an owner before committing.

Black flat water soluble spray paint, can be sprayed on inside or out side, cleans up with water. The glass is getting damaged by the laser engraving process, leaving tiny glass shards which you can clean up with a Dremel wire brush or a flap wheel or very fine grain sandpaper.
