Fourby Friday - Hilux fuel tank vacuum issue

Toyota Hilux (and possibly other utilities) blocked fuel breather issue.
Fuel error/warning light came on. I thought the issue was water in the fuel filter. After emptying the water catch the light remained on. Upon opening the fuel cap it just about sucked in my arm from the extreme vacuum the tank was under.

I will be making a cover for my fuel filler, not sure why this was omitted from the tray design, mine is completely exposed to anything that the tyre throws up.

We had been bugged by this problem for many months, with the fuel filter being changed too often and sensors replaced, all to no avail. We have an aftermarket large metal fuel tank, and have had it off the truck thinking that it may be contaminated. The bottom panel of the tank was dented up, we thought due to hitting something. When we discovered this post, all was revealed. The cap was clogged and cleaned, and we are able to pull out the dent using vac. cleaner as a blower.Very grateful for your contribution.

You would read about it, but my LN 167 2004 5LE just had the same problem, thanks for the info about it , that fuel cap is certainly a tricky biscuit

My 2004 single cab 4x4 diesel, Holden Rodeo, for years, an hour or two after driving, it would make a funny sound and I often wondered if it had a blocked fuel tank breether. I didn't know where to look for a breether, assumed it would be on the sender. It has also always been a pain to prime the fuel after running out of fuel or changing the fuel filter. I think I probably destroyed my first starter motor trying to get it going again. The other day, after changing the fuel filter and trying to bleed the fuel, I had a sudden brainwave. I took the fuel cap off and it sucked air. Then I did a bit of research and found this video. I did exactly as described and cleaned parts with petrol, tooth brush and compressed air. I have not heard it make the funny sound again. I'm wondering if this is why it has always been a prick to bleed the fuel. Our 100 series Landcruser is very easy. A few pumps and away it goes.

Mate it's always the way, I hire this resolves the issue for you. Running the system dry will make it take ages. Apparently a trick is to run a compressor on the tank and pump it through, never tried it myself. If you check out the video I did with Dan Gough (also on podcast) he actually talks about it.

Thanks mate ...you solved my problem of rough idle on starting. Diesel was being sucked back into the tank after stopping and so the engine was not idling fine. Well done mate

Mate that's why I had to film it, such a small fix to resolve a few problems. Glad your truck is working properly again!
