This is what I grew updoing before curling irons were electric. Curls took hours, but they usually stayed better than using heat after your hair dries.

Nothing "weird" about this, except you should use strips of soft fabric, not paper! Women have made rag curls since forever. We used to sleep in rags or curlers. Brush rollers were the worst, so uncomfortable!

Dont use paper towels..wasteful and damaging.... Use an old shirt and cut into strips

Those headband curls were awful. They looked BAD. And sleeping with hairspray in??? What terrible advice! Also, those rag curls shouldn't use paper towel, that is too rough, and will leave debris behind!!! You need smooth cotton, like an old tee shirt ripped into strips or something. The poor model is trying so hard to look happy, but i felt bad for her.
