I think Violet is good at grounding/shielding because she does it all the time with her chronic pain. Multiple times in the book she talks about walling off the pain to be able to keep moving on. So she just already knew how to ground/shield by the time her bond happened.

OH and BTW Andarnaurram as an alternative to the Scottish -- in Swedish Andarna means ghost or spirit and Uram means master -- RESURRECTION?? OR Hebrew Uram means My Flame, My Light!! Also did you guy find it interesting that Violet broke the rules that Mira gave her for the quadrant - dont make friends (made em... already lost one to death) -- Dont sleep with upper rank ( um yeah her wing leader lol) And my question is - HOW did that box the Venin wanted end up in the tower??? Ice being Deigh's power rather than Liam's second signet makes so much sense! We forget that dragons have their own powers aside from the powers that they channel to their riders. Maybe we don't see more dragons using their own powers because they probably don't trust their riders or leadership to not take advantage of it!

Gen Melgren absolutely knows there are venin. He also wants all the marked ones dead. He didn’t make the deal to keep them alive, Lilith did. He will do anything to ensure they don’t graduate. Dain’s dad knows that the venin will be going to Athebyne. “You have the choice of abandoning the village of our enemy or abandoning command of your wing.” Gen Melgren says elimate them and Dain’s dad is like say more. Xander is not an inntrinsic. If he was he could hear everyone’s thoughts. He can’t. He’s hearing Violet’s. I think that has to do with their relationship being more than love. He tries to shield her thoughts for her privacy. Maybe sometimes he’s human and can’t block them out. I think there are “power points” at certain locations along the border. They could be ward hotspots. Tairn says “there’s something in that trading post. We all feel it.” The locations that we’ve heard about that have been attacked are Athebyne (south), Montserrat (north), Chakir (center) The Sage then disappears into thin air, without the chest, when he realizes that his battle is lost. Violet’s power is really special. The professors and command are taking interest, Xaden took interest, Tairn took interest and now the venin! When Liam first saw something it was 4 venin. As Violet got into the fight wyvern showed up and then there’s the venin that said “Such untapped power. No wonder we were called here.” The four venin were there for the box. The rest came for Violet, for her power.

25:22 Dain went to the outpost that Xaden could fall back to. Dain "called it" before they left. So he obviously knew where he was sending Violet and Xaden and was hoping he (dain) could use the War games to step up in leadership.

1:59:00 - There are few moments back to back when Tairn hears Violets thoughts and they aren't italicized. Followed by a "I hadnt't spoken those words. I thought them." (~Page 229 Chapter 15) I think the italics are used in moments she is actively trying to communicate via thought. I also think she occasionally communicates via thought without intending to. Then again - I really hate the idea of Xaden being an Inntinsic. I'll only accept it if I read it on the pages haha

I agree with you about this. I don’t think Violet realizes she communicating through thoughts during these times. They have open communication always and until she learns to shield/block her thoughts from Tairn and Xaden better then she’ll push thoughts through the bond unknowingly. Reminds me of ACOTAR when the bond is still new for Feyre

I'm a little late but my theory on the Xaden being a mind reader relates more to the bond between dragons than being an intinsict. Tairn can read Vi's mind too and respond to her thoughts and not what she says to him, maybe it's the same for Xaden and because he's more advanced in his bonding skills. I'm with you Lexi, I don't want him to be an intinsict!

I think this theory really comes into play when Violet feels her forehead prickle when Xaden is looking in the room, even before bonding. However, there is a scene (I don't have the page with me) where she feels it, but the narration says he hasn't acknowledged her yet. Xaden has also been known to answer her inner thoughts when the text is not italicized, but I feel this is more just the commonsense responses. I too agree that he is not intrinsic

I wanna talk about fictional characters being real. There’s actually at least one neuroscientific paper on the connection between our brain and our emotional connection to fictional characters. I know this because this was the topic of my Bachelor’s degree’s final paper. It basically says that when a fictional character/world is drawn clearly enough (basically given character traits and therefore making them human and making it a tangible entity for the reader) our frontal cortex and our amygdala release a substance that creates an emotional connection to a fictional character as if it were a real person. The brain basically does not distinguish between fictional characters and real people, but allows us to feel all the feelings, to empathize and to be happy for them/with them, to mourn them and with them. It also says that the stronger the clearer an author “paints the picture” of a character, the stronger the connection will be. Even more so if something bad or undeserved happened to a beloved character. That’s the gist of it, but I will say that I am fuzzy on some of the details because it’s been a few years since I’ve read that paper. I could link it though if anyone is interested. (If it’s still available) In my work, I used Tess from Tess of the D’Urbervilles as an example because Thomas Hardy did make some gut wrenching literary choices causing the reader to literally cry out in pain several times throughout the book because of the sheer uncalled for things that happened to Tess with the book ending in the most (purposefully done) unsatisfying manner which then caused the ultimate emotional reaction of the reader. This is what happened with Liam too. He died even though it should not have happened. We loved him so much that his death was even more painful. More so because Rebecca did an awesome job of making all characters in Fourth Wing so real to us

Dain's signet reflects a lot his core of always needing to know stuff, and maybe that part of his personality came from his father wich in case Dain's Dad signet can be something related to that, and If we believe that It has something to do with interrogation or knowlegde then maybe his signet can be knowing when a person is lying

Every “Xaden’s an intinnsic” theory is so well formulated that I’m lowkey convinced lolllll but I don’t really think he’s one. I feel like it’s more of a fated mates bond with Violet. She didn’t know they could mind talk until Xaden did it at Montserrat so maybe Violet doesn’t know how to tap into that power to read his mind yet? If he was actually an intinnsic he would’ve been able to read Dain’s (yuck) mind and know about the Athebyne plans with his dad! When they got to Athebyne they were genuinely surprised and confused about why no one was there. He would know about lesdership’s plans too every time they crossed paths, like when Xaden and Violet bumped into Dain’s dad and Violet’s mom. Hope that makes sense! ALSO I freaking LOVE this podcast you guys are incredible and actually cured my Fourth Wing hangover !!! The amount of details you guys pay attention to is insane. Thank you

I don't know if I can get behind Liam channeling Deigh's ice powers, because isn't it stated that feathertails lose that power when they grow up? So, if feathertails are baby dragons, and not a royal lineage, it might not be possible. As we know with Andarna, she loses the ability to stop time as she gets older and will not be able to channel that power into Violet, which is why we theorize she will have a different separate signet. I am very much in the Second Signet camp. Re: the ultimate price - what if the ultimate price of the third brother is not his life, but rather his soul? Thinking back on Violet explaining to Jesenia about the fables, "...I could use a few good folktales of what happens when humans defile the power channeled to them. I've never read of a single rider losing their soul to their powers, the dragons keep us from that." Also, when Mira and Violet are at Rhiannon's, Mira states, "But we have the kind of power people would kill for, Violet. Dragons and gryphons are the gatekeepers, and I'm sure that to someone jealous enough, ambitious enough, risking a soul would be a fair price for the ability to wield." It seems too perfect to be coincidence, especially because during her conversation with Xaden she asks if he believes that people can tap into the source of magic without a dragon or gryphon to channel, corrupting their power beyond salvation. After Violet kills Jack, she is so torn up about it. I think this will ultimately be a power struggle between Violet deciding is the power to protect a whole kingdom worth the price of her soul. Or something to do with an inner battle for her. Also, what if, and this may be a crazy idea, but what if Venin attacked Lilith when she was pregnant with Violet because they somehow knew she was a resurrection of one of the brothers, and they tried to take her out before she had the chance to (very a la Voldemort, the early years). That's why her father wanted her to become a Scribe, and when her mother decided to become a double agent or discovered the truth, she placed Violet in the Rider's quadrant because she knew Violet would somehow be the key?

I’ve been back and forth about the second signet theory as well. And I’m actually starting to believe that maybe the marked ones have two signets and their first signet has to do with something regarding mind (Liam’s foresight, Xaden being a mind reader) because it came from Codagh. Furthering the thought that because General Melgren’s signet has to do with seeing future outcomes (mind power). Then the marked ones show their strongest signet (provided it isn’t a death sentence) to show how strong they are.

About the "Fucking traitor" line. The one reason I am absolutely sure Xaden isn't reading her mind with a signet is because Tairn does the same thing when Violet just narates her thoughts and out of nowhere he just comments on it. Tairn is always in her head thanks to his bond and I am leaning on the page of "fated mates" between Xaden and Violet because of that. Unless they put their shields on, Xaden occupies the same kind of place as Tairn in her mind.

I’m assuming one of the Venin also have foresight powers like General Melgren which is why they were called there. Also, I have a crazy wild thought to share: what if Andarna is part gryphon. I could be entirely wrong but her coloring being gold and having paws rather than claws could indicate gryphon features. Additionally, it seems the dragons have no idea what to do with her as she may not be fully one of their own which is why she can make her own choices. We don’t seem to have enough description of the gryphons yet for this to be a realistic theory, so it’s just a thought. Gryphons do have the ability to channel, the only difference between gryphons and dragons is the wards that the dragons power and the altitudes they can fly at. My last totally out there theory is that she is the last of the race before gryphons and dragons (a royal whose DNA the two species descended from). She would represent the two kingdoms and the split of the species is mirrored by the division of land. Forgive me if I’m a total idiot who didn’t pay enough attention to her description. I’m currently on my second read through and haven’t gotten to threshing yet. I did try looking it up, but google hasn’t been very helpful between Adarna’s description or the gryphon’s.

I’m doubtful that Xaden can even return to Basgiath because of the bargain he made for the rebels children. He told Violet that his life is forfeit if even one rebels, and since he abandoned his command to fight for the enemy, leadership may take it that way unless they play it off as an ambush as soon as they got there. But seeing how they already broke into her moms office, a prison break scene would be interesting to read. If he decides to stay behind in Aretia, their mental connection would be faster communication than missives and could help the revolution. And if this becomes a tv/movie adaptation…I hope whatever actress plays Violet doesn’t give us another Twilight venom scene when Violets poisoned 😂

IRON FLAME SPOILERS: My thoughts are the sliver scars is that they are connected with magic. Xaden has a scar from his bonding with his dragon. Violet doesn’t get a scar from Tairn but it was during her bonding with both her dragons. The scars on Xaden’s back are from a dagger with magical ruins. And Violet got a scar from a venin’s daggers which could have been enchanted. Violet’s hair is 100% a scar.

Adding to this: The sliver could represent seeing a life debt/life bond. Violet can only see hers and Xaden’s because it applies to her and Xaden’s because of the whole I die you die bond along with the dragons. You can only see the magic making that scars sliver due to it applying to them. This could explain why dragons give scars to their riders along with the relic. Xaden’s scars are sliver because of some life debt magic happening. And also explains why only Violets and Xaden’s scars are described as sliver and why others are not.

Do you think the Venin are getting closer to the Navarre border because they are making their own wards using the material that creates the wards, what they were looking for in the clocktower, which is causing dragon wards to fail. So if the Venin can extend their own wards into Navarre territory they can play on equal or uneven playing field depending how far the Venin wards go.

Ok so here's my thought on the daggers... The griffin fliers are raiding to get the material to make these weapons right? That tells me that this material is kind of hard to come by meaning that they can only get so much of the material to make these weapons and so they need quantity so they make small weapons so they can make a lot of them...

So Violet and her siblings are going to mirror the three original siblings that spawned the dragon riders, griffin riders and vennin (sp?), right? The real question is which of Violet's siblings is going to become corrupted? Will it be Mira because she stays with Navarre (sp?)? Is it possible that she will feel betrayed if by Violet and even possibly Lillith keeping Brennan being alive a secret from her and that will be the final straw? Will Brennan go power-hungry on the Revolution side and become a tyrant and need to be overthrown in the last couple of books? Will Brennan somehow become a vennin?

In my opinion out of all the romance books I’ve read, “you are going to be the death of me,” is kind of more a phrase of endearment. So this to me isn’t so much a foreshadowing that Xaden will die because of how many times he says this, remember he dies…then she dies and if the bond is strong with their dragons then Segail and Tarin die, but because Andarna is her second dragon, she may not die…. Just my thoughts.

i agree that i think that xaden rode on tairn behind the saddle with violet strapped into the saddle so xaden could support her upper body. i thnk tairn allowed it bc he thinks hed die if violet does.

What if the reference to the silver scars is due to an injury being mended? I would be surprised If Xaden was allowed to be mended from the 107 cuts, but the other references to silver scars sound like they could be from a mending???

It was said in fourth wing that Naoli died trying to resurrect Brennan and the professpr Kaori said he died next to Brennan while trying to resurrect him. How is this possible? How did Brennan die or came back to life? Does that mean Naoli died in vain believing he was dead?

It could just be that someone (3rd year) magically wields ice spears, and Liam simply is using them, and the choice to use "wield" was a poor one.

With the daggers I think since the veins ise magic they could stop something like an arrow being fired at them but if the riders are close the only way to defend is a physical fight that the veins wouldn't expect. They are ready for a magic fight maybe not a physical fight.
