Basic and Staff Slings are largely underappreciated these days but they were a popular skirmisher weapon in ancient warfare. Since none of that stuff survives more than a year left out in the open, it's hard to gauge just how prevalent they were but think what a few mates could do to a group of closely packed combatants with those things. A great video.

@@kleinjahr Wrong. Roman Legionnaires used lead bullets since Legionnaires also used slings, pilum, throwing darts (Plumbata) they wanted to use as much fire power as possible when closing in. Balearic Island slingers on the other hand used longer slings made for larger projectiles they pretty much played the same role as modern light mortar squads. raining down quite large and heavy stones which pretty much ignored armor due to energy transfer and moumentum just watch what happens when baseball pitcher hits batter in the helmet and batters helmet is specifically designed to resist impacts now image what would happen when a stone which produces higher Joules then baseball hits you in the metal helmet that unlike Batter's helmet bends.

@@greatdude7279 klenjahr is right, though. they did use Balearics as mercenaries, as did the Carthaginians. It's no matter that the legionnaire was also capable of using a sling, the Balearics were dedicated in their role and the best there was available at the time. The Football shaped shot was also found in battlefields that the Balearics were involved in for different powers.

A good staff sling stick should be of ash or similar wood. The 'spring' of the stick adds a huge amount of power, over and above the leverage. We did trials at St Albans and were getting 200m+ with smallish cobblestones. Using lead balls produces horrendous damage :)

The romans i belived trained peasants from spain to throw rocks with stick slings and regular slings from 3 years of age until they could throw the length of several fotball fields. Rome went to great lengths to find perfect stones and they also melted olive shaped lead bullets up to the size of a small orange. You can imagine being hit by one of those from that far away and perhaps high up on a hill coming down on you in great numbers! I have heard theres accounts of fully armored medieval knights having been killed by those along with the horse in the same hit! Often they carved jokes and taunts on them and some have been found with drilled holes so they scream or whistle in flight! You guys should try melting a few of those ;)

Vis a vis accuracy, if we assume for a moment that David v. Goliath actually happened, one would have to keep in mind that whatever kind of sling David was using is one he had likely been using on a daily basis for the majority of his life. I imagine a shepherd would gets bored and practice with his sling just to kill time even when there aren't predators to fend off. Also, according to sling enthusiast Lindybeige, slings were sometimes used to herd the sheep. Rather than running around after strays, they would just launch a rock to land in front of it, which would spook it and send it running back toward the flock. TL;DR: Just because it doesn't seem as accurate in this case doesn't mean a staff sling isn't deadly accurate in the hands of a professional.

The chart depicting Energy at the end says it all. As far as accuracy, the Bible says that David chose 5 smooth stones from the river. That there were only 5 may indicate that they were larger stones, as he had to carry these in his shepherd's bag. Nonetheless, round stones would have obviously flown straighter and a bit faster. You guys were using chunky, Maine rocks. So, yes, the shepherd's sling is certainly a very viable theory. This was a great demonstration; a real eye opener. Thanks for all your effort. Peace.
@MarkLawry
@MarkLawry 4 жыл бұрын
I like your theory of the stick sling. It makes perfect sense with the text. The sling shot is limited to the stored potential energy in the stretched band. A smaller stone goes faster but with the same energy. With the sling stick, you can swing it harder to put more energy in the shot.

Very interesting. This is my first exposure to the Shepherd's Staff Sling. It strikes me as an interesting parallel and contrast to the atlatl. In both cases, there is a stick launcher which provides extra leverage, but the atlatl trades reduction of missile mass for increased velocity. With a sharpened missile this makes for deeper penetration. The staff sling allows a more massive blunt missile for heavier impact. It seems to me, though, that the staff sling needs a headshot for a kill of a bear or lion, and would not be nearly as debilitating as the atlatl with a body shot. A shepherd would have a lot of time to practice while watching the flock to increase his accuracy.
@meatsmell8639
@meatsmell8639 Жыл бұрын
I view an atlatl as a hunter/warriors weapon, capable of taking out small game but not necessarily ideal for it, whereas a sling of any form is more suited for hitting smaller objects due to the larger projectile size, while still remaining capable of dropping bigger targets in a pinch

Gotta love the functionality of the hand-held trebuchet. The possibility of making one in the wild with limited access to modern resources. Staff sling for outright power of impact vs the size of stone and the slingshot for match grade speed and ease of carrying. Both are pretty awesome. The slingstaff has other advantages and applications for use. I think that for the different applications, I would say slingstaff. Its a walking stick, a tent/ tarp pole cqc weapon convenient place to carry your sling, fishing spear/ pole, possible friction fire starter, digging stick, lever/ prybar, probe stick, it could be notched as an atlatl for throwing darts also depending on the length of your stick. Lots of mods and applications with the slingstaff.

Fun video. I'm sure as far as accuracy goes it's slingshot>staff sling>sling. Romans cast their own lead sling bullets (that whistled and were engraved with insults among other things). When a well practiced soldier wielded a sling along with ammo that was uniform, it isn't suprising that a sling could be deadly accurate in the hands of someone who was very well practiced. Shepherd children still use slings to this day and I imagine you begin to get an eye for the perfect stones to launch in your sling. I think the biggest detriment to the accuracy of either weapon is the rocks themselves. Unless you can hand pick the perfect rocks, it's likely going to be difficult to be accurate at any considerable range whether you are well-practiced or not.

The Slingshot/Catapult is good for more rapid-fire, perhaps more accuracy, but not so much devastating power! I like the hand held slingshot best, but want to try out the staff slingshot! At the end of the day, whichever you practice with and prefer you will become good at! Interesting video, perhaps you can do more in the way of home made weapons?

Camp Mendocino, Summer 1962, Boy's Club camp. 9yrs old. We were forbidden to make a sling on day 2, naturally the majority of us young campers had homemade slings by day 3, practiced on static targets, graduate to floating targets in the creek, and the poorest of us actually got very good. 4 yrs later I told some buddies, wasn't believed. Used my shoelaces and a rag pocket made up on the spot, lined up some bottles, cans, rocks on the RR track, took them all down, missed only a few times, hadn't used the sling since camp days. Impressed the heck out of my friends. I said' Wasn't much, target wasn't moving, and I missed a few, out of practice.'

Either of them is going to hurt. But the staff sling flinging the substantially bigger rock would do a lot more damage especially if it was a weapon u used every day and had increased the accuracy to a level you have with your slingshot.

My analysis is this: Slingshot - Has the advantage in rate of fire, ease of use, size, accuracy, and range. Has the disadvantage of needing latex rubber, a material that would not be discovered or refined till the last couple centuries. Staff sling - Has the advantage in an extremely simple construction, can throw a much larger projectile potentially, can sustain a faster rate of fire, and is fairly easy to train to use. Has the disadvantage of a slower projectile speed, larger size, shorter range, and lower accuracy thanks to human error. Sling - Has the advantage in being extremely simple, very small size, can throw as large a stone as the staff sling, can throw faster than staff sling, better range than staff sling, and pretty darn accurate. Has the disadvantage of needing a culture specifically built around using it from birth to actually be a truly effective weapon. If you have a group of Balearic slingers then slings are the way to go. If not, staff slings are a good way to get cheap but effective missile troops from the untrained masses. If you have a load of slingshots, what are you fighting people with slingshots for? It's the 20th century at least, they have guns you lunatic! It's a bit similar to what happened with the hand cannon, crossbow, and longbow. The English had a terrific weapon but they also had a culture that allowed them to use it effectively. The hand cannon was more powerful but was much more material dependent. The crossbow kind of sat between them in terms of abilities and cost.

The main reason why slings weren't used more in warfare is probably due to the formation. You will have to put slingers in a sparse row to avoid friendly fire and them hitting each other. While you can put lot more archers in tight formation row after another for a huge volley.

The sling had twice the speed as the staff, but the weight of the ammunition increases with the cube of the diameter. Momentum = mass * velocity So the velocity is in half, but the mass of a 2.5" sphere of rock is 4.5 times the mass of a 1.5" sphere (65 vs 14.1 cu in). So the sling staff would deliver more than twice the momentum than the slings would.

The gentleman using the sling staff was visibly tentative and slowing down while trying for accuracy. That's not a knock on him and I appreciate his effort and skill with a very uncommon weapon. When you consider that David would have grown up using his weapon and that his life/livelihood depended on it I don't imagine he would have that same issue. He would have most likely practice with it daily and been far better than anyone alive today. Basically the equivalent of a special operations soldier with their rifle. He would have been able to launch that thing all out with complete mastery of form, speed, and accuracy. After watching this video its clear that its very possible the sling staff was used. Thank you both for the extremely interesting vid. I enjoyed it very much, you guys are awesome!

The Stick Goliath mentioned was in fact the Shepherd's staff used to herd sheep. Goliath called it a stick because to a 10 foot giant, in his eyes, it WOULD be a stick. David would not have carried 2 separate items ( pole sling and Shepherds staff) at the same time. He used the hand sling. The pole sling was a soldiers weapon.

I' made staff slings and used them as well as slingshots and even slings, the staff sling is easier to use than the sling and during the middle ages, it was the grenade launcher of its day. Because it was used to launch an early version of Molotov cocktails and with stones, it was used to break ship mast of medieval ships in naval warfare engagements before gunpowder and cannons were invented. I invented a new type of pouch for a staff sling, that I call an origami pouch because it's folded and stitched with layers of fabric like origami and the pouch holds the stone in the Kreese of the pouch. Very snug, until release, I found that traditional staff sling pouches have problems of stones falling out of you're pouch before release but the origami pouch solved that problem.

I was able to make a similar concave cup by fixing the flat leather diamond-shaped pouch into the split of an untightened fisherman's knot, (weaving the cords through slits around the edge of the pouch). This means the knots slip toward each other slightly, pulling the pouch up around the stone.
@slingshotwarrrior8105
@slingshotwarrrior8105 6 жыл бұрын
That's very similar to my origami pouch, real leather is hard to find where I am so I use 2 layers of denim with a thinner fabric as the last layer and I simply fold and stitch. The ends off into a square shape and after that I fold it down the middle into a creese and stitch each creese end off and after that, it's easy to tie rope or chord. Onto the staff sling pouch, through the loopholes at the ends of the pouch and you know the rest. My origami pouch is pacifically made for staff slinging, but I have other pouches I make for slings and slingshots.

Love the video bro... but as a combat medic I have to point out -leaving the coconut loose on top of the table dispersed all the energy upon impact. A real head is held in place by the cervical spine. A real direct hit to the forehead wouldn’t have all the energy dispersed into the open environment behind it upon impact, the energy would be transferred into the head and c-spine.

Kinetic energy is 1/2 m v^2, proportional to mass and to velocity squared. Compared to the same baseline (small rock at sling staff speed): - The slingshot shoots 2.5x faster and has ~6x energy - The sling throws rocks of ~2.5x larger diameter, so mass (and energy) is ~15x higher So we should expect the sling staff to have 2-3x as much energy behind each shot compared to the slingshot, with considerably less accuracy.

The power in the staff sling was shocking. Slingshots without a wrist brace are pointless as you can't get full power or accuracy. Personally I really like a Barnett Black Widow slingshot. Lightweight, can fold up in your hand ready for action but can't be seen easily and they have a wrist brace. Matched with ball bearings as shot they are a great tool.
