Fox and Cat

Our cat "Socke" and a fox were friends for some time.
One morning in the autumn of 2015 we caught them playing in the garden.
Socke was our favourite cat of our three cats
Unfortunately he was hit by a car and died on 4th Oct. 2016.
We buried him in our garden and put a big stone slab on top of his grave.
In the spring of 2016 we found that there was an empty hole under the stone slab.
We presumed that he was taken by a badger that came when the fox had gone after Socke died.
We make music and have a rehearsal room in our cellar. Socke also loved to be with us when we played music and he often came into our cellar during bandpractice.
After the cat Socke had gone we sometimes heard weired noises in our cellar during band practice.
We joked and said this might be Socke's ghost. So we called our band The Ghost Cats

The fox's body language is interesting - that slightly open mouth and the rolling around are both signals that say "I want to play". All through this last summer I had a family of foxes living at the bottom of my garden, a vixen and four cubs; my neighbours acquired a puppy, pretty much the same age as the fox cubs, a couple of months younger. Once the puppy was about four months old, he would bark at the foxes and when he did the vixen would run off; three of the cubs would run off with her, but the other one would sit there just the other side of the fence. Then one day she jumped over and they started to play with each other, taking turns to chase each other in circles. This freaked my neighbours out and they made a big fuss about the fox attacking their puppy - as if! They carried on playing like this as often as they could - always ended by the neighbours coming out and chasing the fox off. Spoil sports.

@@RaymondBCrisp Yes, but usually confined to rabbits and guinea pigs, which is why you need to keep them in strong hutches, preferably off the ground, if you keep them outdoors - and chickens of course if you keep them and don't shut them up securely. But they don't predate dogs or cats; dogs are too big/strong for foxes to even think about taking on and so are cats really, certainly adult ones - foxes look bigger than cats, but under that thick fur they are skinny and weigh about the same, and cats are strong, agile and much more aggressive than foxes, which are basically pretty timid. Foxes natural diet is small rodents and the odd bird, plus worms, insects and a few berries. Where I live there are a lot of foxes; every other house has a cat or dog and as far as I know nobody has ever lost either to foxes

@@lackofdubs5975 A lot of "Play" is practise hunting - and not just for foxes; when you play with a kitten, throwing a ball for it, dangling something on a string, that kind of stuff, the things the kitten does are all hunting moves. No-one gets hurt 🙂 If this fox was hunting the cat (as if), it wouldn't be hanging around saying "Look, here I am". And foxes don't "hunt prey that won't back down", they hunt small things that are no danger to them at all. And, yes, I do know how to read their behaviour, I see it all the time.

I'm sorry to hear about Socke. I used to let the cats I had go out unattended and my current cat, BlackJack, didn't come back. He was missing for days and only after I left my front door open around the clock did he walk up stairs about 3am. I walk him on leash now.

For those who think the Fox was "seriously" trying to kill the cat, Foxes are wild animals and learn early that serious wounds can destroy their lives. "Almost" all of them will not try to kill a cat, since a serious injury can result. It's quite clear that "this" Fox was just having a good time.

This fox was just playing indeed. But a domestic cat is no match for a fox. If the fox was seriously the cat would've been dinner. Wild cats, OTOH, are a whole different story. A fox would make a circle a hundreds feet wide around a wild cat.

I wonder if they realise, early on, that they have a mutual threat and that they might achieve more by co-operating. Maybe it's like when cats and bears/owls/badgers/raccoons become friends. They help each other.

Both Foxes and Cats have a "sense of humor." and becoming friendly with an animal which is neither a "threat" nor prey, from time to time prompts atypical behavior. These associations are Very rare. Personally, I've only witnessed one such friendship and that was between a Wood Duck, and a Common Loon .

@@gerrywhelan5761 A fox killed my beautiful boy cat Major 7 years ago. I was a little late getting home from work and found tracks in the snow. I found Major in the woods. This past summer my boy cat Malcolm disappeared a few days after a bobcat was seen on trail cam. I have no problem shooting these predators first chance I get. Don't tell anyone when you kill them or fish and game will most likely give you a bad time. The guy that made this video is an idiot for not protecting his cat.

Maybe foxes can feel sadness. I had a family of foxes living at the bottom of my garden all through this last year, a vixen and four cubs. When the cubs were about four months old, one of them was killed, almost certainly by a badger. The fur around the vixen's eyes turned white overnight and for the next three days she pined, just lying flat out all day on the lawn, hardly eating. Then she went back to normal over the next few days. This may have been stress rather than what we would call sadness, who knows, but she was definitely very affected by the cub's death.

@@bravideo5395 In the UK we have lots of urban foxes, i.e. foxes that live in towns, not the countryside. They share their territories with cats (a lot more cats than foxes) are there are generally no problems; they usually keep a distance from each other, but sometimes they "make friends", like in this video. It's possible that a fox might sometimes kill a kitten or an old and sick cat, but it almost never happens - and they won't fight with a healthy adult cat, too dangerous. The only time you are likely to see a fox eating a cat is if the fox has found the cat dead, run over or something like that.

There are videos on KZbin showing Foxes attacking cats, but cats can defend themselves or downright claw the crap out of a fox in most cases. Only a starving fox would risk trying to prey on one and it would probably lose badly, unless it was some old weak cat.

Some weeks before I took the video I had seen fox and our cat (Socke) in the garden dozing in the sun. The fox was born in a den near our house and our cat Socke knew him. Some time later Socke was run over by a car. So not a happy ending. Cars seem to be more dangerous for cats than young foxes.

What an unlucky fox. It'd have probably never happened if it wasn't for the dog. I also have a hard time believing it attacked the mained coon. Foxes are extremely catious and tend to avoid confrontation, there are yt videos of normal housecats bullying foxes away from food. Anyway, how unfortunate! I hope the fox didn't have cubs. Unlike cats and dogs they have noone to watch over them, and their mom getting injured like that would mean the end.

Oh my, I am sorry, I just read the story about your cat. Its why I try to break any stray, that I take in, from wanting to be outside. Also, people are cruel towards cats. A coupla strays I have taken in, would never stay in the house. They had been outside so long, they just couldn't be house-broken. I did the best I could to keep them safe, but the inevitable happens. Just glad I was able to give them all many healthy happy years.

@@gerrywhelan5761 not too up on prison practice, from observation i stand by foxes are wary of cats. Not to say that a sick or otherwise incapacitated cat wouldn't be vulnerable to a hungry fox, just shows you should keep foxes well fed, keeps them healthier too.

And in the clip the cats attack is really its defense, for what appears to be the fox messing could turn serious very quickly if it thought it detected a weakness like what you said "sickness" or "incapacitated", fox's like to test the waters before serious attack.
