My father was born in Kansas in 1918, and grew up playing Fox and Geese in the snow. He said it was a game that was played by the children of pioneers, which would have been his parents. I had no idea that it was so wide spread. Such a fascinating video. Btw, it’s great exercise.

Oh wow I saw this thumbnail and immediately thought of playing Nancy Drew White Wolf of Icicle Creek. It has this game. Didn’t think there could be a physical game. Super cool.

When I was a kid in the US in the 1960s we played a game called Fox and Geese in the snow, but it wasn't this game. I wonder if it was the Russian game you referenced. You would stamp out a wheel-shaped path in the snow, with a circle and several spokes crossing in the center. One kid, the Fox, would start in the center, and the rest, the Geese, would start on the circle. It was a tag game, with the fox trying to tag one of the geese, who would then be the new fox. There weren't really any rules except that you had to stay in the paths. As far as the board game, one set of rules I've seen say that the geese can't move backwards. But I wonder if the people who have published those rules are mixing it up with Asalto, where the goal is for the geese to occupy the "fortress", the bottom arm of the board.

You mentioned that some variations of the game start with more geese. You could think of adding more geese as a way to help/handicap either player. If you find that the fox is usually winning, add another goose next time you play. If the fox is usually loosing, remove a goose next time you play. (Something like the way you handicap Go by having black start with one to nine stones already on the board.)

It can be, for sure! But adding more geese to the board can help even the odds up. Thanks for watching!

Wow, this video was great! Would you be looking into selling your boards? It's very hard to find good fox and geese boards and yours looks just perfect. I saw you talked to one person about thinking about opening a Esty store and I recommend doing that as well. I honestly think there will be a lot of interest for your boards if you do it.
@TheRavensTable2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the vote of confidence! I do plan on opening a storefront at some point, life is just very much all over the place right now - hence my lack of video updates in a while.

6:33 why didn't the fox jump diagonally to eat middle goose then horizontally and backward?
