According to what I read from the event, the paper boats were actually supposed to be floating lanterns, anyways! So either it was a reference to that, or, yeah, the boats could just be the next best thing.

yes they did plan for it to be paper lanterns instead but i think theyre leaving it for future events. We might see them in the next season, who knows!

This is incredibly well made, the story telling, the song, everything. They were talking about how they met and it's easy to see how time has passed, they were getting older and the items used were also being changed to show the time skip.
