My dad put me to work every day at age twelve and he didn't pay me. It was his way of punishing me. I was always being punished throughout my entire teenage years. Customers would often remark about how young I was on the job. I worked for years for no money whatsoever. I was expelled from school twice and suspended more times than I can count, maybe fifty. I didn't hurt people, I just skipped a lot of school, smoked weed, drank beer, vandalized property, shoplifted, nothing that really hurt anyone else but me. I was punished for that. I had a cruddy time as a teenager. I worked a lot. There were times when I ran away instead of going to work. Dad would scream as I ran, "Don't come back!" I often stayed gone for days at random friend's houses. When I was fifteen, I skipped ninety days of school. I was sleeping in my dad's box truck outside in the driveway when I was supposed to be in school. I heard knocking on the door of the house and looked out the window of the truck. Two truant officers were at the door looking for me and entered my house without a warrant. I looked on through the window and I watched them enter the house. I exited the truck once they went inside the house. I crept along the siding and listened by my father's window, which was cracked open. The police entered his bedroom while he was sleeping and they woke him up. They mentioned something about all the empty beer cans surrounding him. He was very confused why the police were there. They had no right to enter like that. They said they were looking for me. Dad said I was at school. One of the officers said, "Well, he's not at school." I took off running between a building and a house. I ended up in a parking lot full of cars, maybe it was an impound lot. I wasn't certain. I was a kid. I stayed inside an unlocked SUV and slept in there. I made it my place and slept overnight in it five times. I was eventually caught and went to DH.

thank you. I'm sick of this he's, 6 5 (the 15yr old), so he's hard to control. But he wasn't 6 5' as a baby? My brother is 6 6' but my mother didn't play, and she had family support if need be. I'm sure there's big grown and short that could check him and the 12yr old (who probably depends on his big brother). So, size isn't a good enough excuse. I truly believe that too many "believers " aren't mentally equipped to be taking part in religious practices (which many young are forced into), because they don't seem to know when to separate faith and its doctrine, so they can see a Dr. when needed (or whatever). I also believe because of that, many overly "religious " people should not have children. You have instincts when you're born, which is divine imo, so why would i neglect that, to look in a book or "pray" on something, which is already given me? Too many are quick to say I prayed and read my bible, so I've done my part? But one's mental issues have to be addressed property, which can include your faith, but not solely, imo. To be blunt, too many put "faith" over the reality of this world, so much that they ignore the obvious to the point of willful neglect. And in this case, unfortunately, they try to get by, by adultifying children. The parents of these children have 2 homes, if the children have "behavioral " issues, spend the money needed to place them where they're not in the streets and where you have access to their care. Not have them in the mean streets setting them up for jail or death. And other adults should not support it, like 1 lady in this vid. Children mimic their environment; it's not rocket science. The parents here lack (whatever), so the children "get to choose"...

Why would another child want to sleep on the porch brush their teeth outside damn near live outside. There's something going on that hasn't been discovered or is being covered up. No one would sleep outside, on a porch, in a Michigan winter. And, if it was by choice, why are they sleeping, inside, at relatives' houses?

These boys really need to talk to someone that maybe they trust to tell what and why this happened to them. Anyone in their RIGHT mind will not sleep out in the cold nor the heat just because they want to. We need to dig deep.

I liked sleeping in my closet because it felt safe. There were reasons.

As a teen, I would sneak out a window in the dead of night to walk several blocks in the brutal cold Ohio winters to meet up with friends, snow hip deep and crazy dark. Kids are stupid, no concept of their own mortality. They probably think they are "safe" on the porch because teens "know" more than adults do, right? Older brother holds more sway over the younger one than the parents. Hoping they can find some sort of resolution before the older one gets in more trouble, taking his brother with him. I had a daughter who would do this kind of nonsense. She grew up, is a mom with kids of her own but still no reasoning with her.

They were taken in by family when they found out what was happening.

Then why did they go to the family members house when offered? Critical thinking is missing

This now says to me one of 2 things: 1) that something horrible took place within that house-and I don't think the mother was responsible for what that horrible thing was, or: 2) the 15 year-old, who is 6'5" and 225 pounds, had presented himself with such a threat to the safety of the parents that it was agreed upon by all of the family members, that the boys would sleep out on the porch(but why would the 12 year-old join him)? Somehow, all of this still doesn't set right with me, and I'm looking to hear some more about exactly why those boys-both a 12 and 15 year-old-would sleep out in this kind of cold that we've been having lately, rather than go somewhere else, even if it's another family member or friend, where it's safe and warm? 12-16-24.

It is child neglect to let the children sleep on the porch. The children should not be allowed to make such a decision. The parents sound foolish to say the children chose to sleep on the porch.

So glad the young men is safe inside with other family members. The parents may not be legally charged, but this story won't be forgotten. Wishing the young men the best!🙏

They are children. They can't choose to sleep outside and parents do nothing. Not even mental health help.

I 100% do NOT believe these children are telling the truth…These children need some mental help health counseling!!

This is beyond incomprehensible. Obviously there is so much more going on. Somebody help these kids. If they’re choosing this clearly they need mental evaluations.

That’s BS! Those parents lied. Teens don’t live voluntarily on a porch. Period.

Even if the kids wanted to sleep outside it’s the parent’s job to make sure they are safe. The neighbors say the boys were going to the bathroom outside.

A good supper; a clean, safe home; help with homework if needed; a warm shower; clean and comfortable pajamas...I’ll sleep inside if those things are provided, thank you very much.

Children should sleep in their beds in the house unless their parents are doing bad things. Children need to do what their told

It is crazy if children can make choices like that they can do what they want anytime. So how do you make sure you're keeping your kids safe if they're sleeping outside on the porch

Wish more people with a background in psych would get on here.... 1. Sometimes, it really isn't "the parents are abusive." Sometimes the problem *starts* with the *child.* We don't *know* what causes a brain to become psychotic. Yes it travels in family lines, but it's just not that simple. We also don't know how some psychotics (1/1000 people you know is fully psychotic according to most study models) to manage to be relatively normal and productive non-criminal members of society, vs. the ones who go utterly bonkers or become dangerous (it's never been as simple as age, race, gender, religious background, socioeconomic group etc.) 2. A psychotic child who has gone "bonkers" for whatever reason WILL harm themselves if it serves their warped purpose to do so. I've watched kids with oppositional defiance disorder refuse *water* to the point of having to be made inpatients and be given IV fluids. Do you know how hard it is to truly shut down the thirst urge? Try going without ANY water for more than a few hours. Most people can't make it past the very first stages of dehydration without a strong distraction...but they do, and it's *dangerous*. Children will also engage in anorexic behavior to the point of critical health risk. Sleeping on the porch sounds more like a narcissistic disorder...the narcissistic child doing something that causes the parents (who are possibly the abuse *victims* in this case) serious upset, while not *really* being a huge danger (male teen kids sleeping on the porch isn't going to being too many criminals out of the woodwork to mess with them, and they can just go t.f. inside as the weather gets colder). My biggest concern is that it seems the older brother with the issues has roped in the younger brother as an ally. 3. Some of you have never done survival camping and it shows. Properly layered in the number of blankets I saw on that porch, there'd be *very* little danger of any sort of frostbite or hypothermia unless the temperature drops a good bit below freezing (I haven't paid any attention to Detroit weather). Even at around 29F with no heavy wind, these kids would likely be just shy of *fine* physically on a raised porch wrapped in those bunches of blankets. 4. Having said all that, YES this needs to be heavily investigated. The key to what is really going on in that house will *probably* be that 12 year old. If the parents (or some other adult(s) with authority in that home) are up to something heinous, it's most likely the 12 year old who will be best able to reveal it.
