My husband took me to two Manchester orchestra concerts and I had never heard of them and never listened to them (except when I can hear my husband screaming their songs through the garage while he’s building stuff.) you guys opened for them both times we saw them and both times I was totally blown away and had to buy tshirts because your guys’ style is great. Now we just missed your show last time you were in town so I downloaded this song and then I said “fuck it” and bought the whole album I literally can’t stop listening to it, especially this song. And the fact that the first song lists everything coming next in the album and the way the first ends and flows into the beginning of this one all of it is so great. And maybe it’s more special because I first saw you guys play it live and know your energy idk…just you guys are really great at what you do and thank you. Please don’t stop. And come back to Cleveland/Pittsburgh soon

AMA questions - What's in your opinion the most unusual/original approach you've taken to writing a song on this or past albums, i.e. building a song from a single synth or vocal line/drum groove/a specific lyrical theme or idea you wanted to embody in a sound/whatever else comes to mind? Also, would you say that Draw Down the Moon circles around specific lyrical themes? I feel like each of your albums has a sort of a (loose) conceptual feeling and sound around them, even though sometimes specific songs would stray from what I interpreted as that emotional core of the album. I love every one of your albums and am really glad to be following the development of your artistic process throughout your discography so I'm really hyped for the new album. Loving both of the singles so far and the versatility they, along with the rest of your music bring. Thanks for the answers and thanks for the touching and beautiful music :)
@Foxing3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if we've got any truly wild approaches. Two come to mind. For the song "Heartbeats", Eric essentially built the song around a sample of a piece by Rachmaninoff. For the song "Speak With The Dead", I wrote the initial structure as just organ and vocal. I intended for it to be a lone organ and vocal song that we would record in a cathedral but when we started to really work on it, it became something much better and more involved. All of the lyrics on Draw Down The Moon are built around one thematic concept. Each is a different take on the same concept.

Question for AMA, I might be wrong but I get the sense Eric has had more influence or ownership of production with the last album and new bits - would love to know anything about this and how you work as a band on the sound/production. I remember reading somewhere that Blonde was a big influence on NMG and that blew my mind so yeah, anything there!
@Foxing3 жыл бұрын
Yes your sense is correct. Eric produced Nearer My God along with Chris Walla who mixed that one. For this record, Eric was our lone producer. Most of it was mixed by John Congelton. Odds are, Eric will be producing and mixing the next thing we make.

Was this done on after effects? Also, how did the collaboration with Yoni come to be? As a big fan of both of you, it was the collaboration I never knew I needed!

Yes, we used after effects to organize all of our 2500 individuals photoshop files. Each frame was hand drawn at 12 FPS. The vhs effect was a sincere vhs transfer. Burned the video to a dvd, recorded it to vhs tape, then brought back to premiere with a capture card.

How was the process of designing the costume/new look? Are the colors and themes symbolic in any way?
@Foxing3 жыл бұрын
Designing the costume, we had a checklist of desired features. The three most important were that the costume captures the feelings of cosplay, androgyny, and haute couture. The colors are aesthetic choices more so than symbols.

Excellent work guys, looking forward to hearing more!

Song sounds like [insert one of many thousands of synth-centric 80's-nostalgia-feel songs that have emerged in the last half decade]. Changed a lot since the early days, ain't they. Less unique in seeking to be more unique. High praise from reviews because the sites that write reviews want uniform and trends. Sowwy. Still Foxing. Still like you as music women/men.

What gave you the idea to animate the video for this song? Great song btw plus the video is amazing
@Foxing3 жыл бұрын
Every album we release we bring up the question of animation. It’s so hard because you don’t want a shit cartoon but we also don’t have a lot of money to do it with. We met Steven Pitingolo who made some rotoscoped gifs of us a couple years ago. I (Conor) immediately hit him up and said we should collaborate. The only thing I’ve ever wanted to really do was make cartoons but always assumed I wasn’t good enough at drawing. But I asked Steven to show me how to animate and he was an incredible teacher. 400 hours and 2,500 hand drawn frames later, we have this.
