I was going through the beginning stages of the process and when it came time for the background test they said go ahead and write down any crime or drug you’ve done no matter how long ago just confess to it on paper and it will speed up the polygraph test and make it easier. If you don’t the polygraph machine will pick it up so you might as well write it down. Like an idiot who didn’t know any better I wrote down the three drugs I had tried back in high school which were weed, cocaine, and shrooms with dates . I turned it in and that same day an official took me outside and notified me that I was automatically disqualified for the cocaine even though that was 4 years ago they had a strict policy on cocaine. My heart dropped. They had hired wife beaters, racists, criminals, and murderers but refused to hire me? A kid with a clean record, good credit, drug free and able bodied candidate. I then tried with the sheriffs dept and it was the same crap, same reason. That’s when my dream of becoming a cop working for the narcotics division came to an end. Now look at them, now they’ll hire anybody. Fuck em.

@ent1311 Жыл бұрын
It depends what those "standards" are. Many of these standards are arbitrary. Like the chief said the chances of you running a mile as an officer in the LAPD are zero. They don't want cops to run anyway - they want them figuring out ways to catch someone peacefully and efficiently. They've recognized that cops running to apprehend a criminal makes them more likely to sustain serious bodily injury. Cops should be encircling and cornering dangerous criminals methodically - utilizing the full suite of tools and technology available to them - not chasing them down alleyways. Would you rather have a candidate that is physically fit or smart enough to avoid having to run? They have radios, helicopters, high speed police vehicles, guns, stun guns, etc that removes the need to be a cross country athlete. That doesn't mean physical assessments should be completely taken out - it just means they need to be tweaked and altered to fit the department's evolving methods. Having bad credit before you enter the police force has not shown conclusively that you are more likely to accept bribes. Many people with acceptable credit scores before they became officers accepted bribes. You could make an argument that poor people would not want to risk the only form of financial security they have for a pay out. What is an important factor in determining someone's trustworthiness are in depth psychological evaluations, background checks, and references from unbiased sources. Police departments have been shown to be discriminatory on subjective tests. Written tests are subjective. Multiple choice questions makes it impossible for police departments to be discriminatory because there is only one right answer on multiple choice tests.

LAPD has been doing this for years. A former neighbor of mine was an LAPD patrol officer in both Hollywood and Van Nuys Divisions. After he resigned, he still had some friendships with some of his former LAPD coworkers and an LA County Sheriff Deputy he also knew. Throughout the 80's, 90's, and 2000's he told me that his friends said over and over again the Affirmative Action thing became worse by the minute and for years.... AND all the while city and county leaders continually created incremental ways to restrict officers in doing their job... AND all of this while the general public becomes more and more woke... AND hating the police right out of the gate. They are hiring people just to show *"WE ARE DIVERSE AND INCLUSIVE."* The vast majority of male officers find every way possible to stay away from feemail officers and civilian staff because even the slightest of incorrect language and or behavior can result in an HR case, lawsuit, and or termination of job regardless of the situation as long as the whamen comes out the victor. They are hiring whamen who are being given multiple chances to pass physical and academic tests only to continue failing over and over again. So they lower the standards. Society is crumbling because we continue to go in directions of no return. For example on our MTA Los Angeles bus and especially subway and light rail lines... The rumor has gone around for years that officers need to make every possible effort to let certain suspects of a specific racial background... we can't say who because that would be "racial profiling," either go with a warning or to ignore all together out of fear of the situation escalating into a lawsuit, riot, or death. Absolutely nobody is allowed to say or do anything because our city, county, and state leaders continue to push whoake agendas that boggle the mind.

Long story but absolutely true. This problem began decades ago and has spread like a cancer. In the early 70's I worked for a medium sized agency and decided to apply to the largest department in north - central Texas. I won't name it, but you can figure it out. I had two years experience and some college. This was well above average for an applicant at that time. I passed all the entrance requirements but was turned down. Several days later I received a call at home from a high ranking officer who worked in personnel. He told me confidentially that the reason I was not hired was because the department had accepted Federal money and they were obligated under Federal mandate to hire minorities. In the following 5 years I kept tabs on the hiring process out of curiosity. The department began sending patrol cars to a minorities' house to bring them to personnel if they needed a ride. Next they lowered the requirements concerning past lifestyle history, next they allowed minorities to be hired and trained for six months and only then were they given the entrance exam. If you want to know what's wrong with today's police agencies, this is where it began. This has absolutely NOTHING to do with disparaging a minority applicant, but has everything to do with the level of competence of recruits.
@tjmarx Жыл бұрын
We have to look at this in context. Millennials are an unskilled, incapable generation of babies in adult bodies. Zoomers, having been raised by millennials are worse. When that's where your candidate base is, you honestly have no choice but to lower standards otherwise you'll get no new hires and everything will fall apart. A department filled with incompetency objectively is better than no department at all. It's a choose the lesser of two evils situation. Same applies across the economy. You have kids growing up thinking they're entitled to things, getting trophies for just showing up, never learning self reliance, never being given insurmountable odds to overcome throughout childhood because they've been bubble wrapped from any kind of difficulty. They get told they need a university degree that 90% of them don't need, and instead of being taught how to think independently and do the jobs their degrees are for they're now taught to pass tests and only think what they're told to. The rate of autism has gone from a stable 1:128 which existed right up until the end of Gen X to now 1:44. Greater awareness and expanded criteria only account for an increase to 1:97. We see similar increased rates for ADHD, Downs Syndrome and an assortment of neurodevelopmental disorders. Standards start at home, throughout childhood. Lowering those standards for generations results in organisations across the whole of economy having to lower their standards too. If you want to live in a well functioning society with appropriate standards, you need to hold your children and yourselves to those standards. Teach them what the need to live and operate in such a well functioning society. Teach them about their personal and social responsibilities that come along with their rights. That rights are earned through responsibility. Teach them how to think, not what to think. And do something about the rising tide of broken genes.

What a slap in the face to the senior officers by the chief at the end there. This is nothing new! I was LAPD in the 90’s and I heard that back in the 80’s the dept hired clean gang members which meant people were know gang members but did not have criminal records. They would go into the military and then go into LAPD. Once hired by the dept they would relay information on drug busts, LAPD tactical plans, deployment plans etc. none of this surprises me at all. I’m so glad I left policing 20 years ago. It’s been ruined by so many things and it just gets worse. No wonder why there is such a huge disconnect from the police and the community. They create it and then the politics involved too have destroyed policing as well. Glad I left CA too!

1) I still think being able to run a 1.5 miles in 12 minutes is relevant. I think in general police should be able to match a firefighter’s physical fitness requirements and maintain a certain level of physical fitness. 2) Bad credit shouldn’t keep you from getting a job. I agree with the chief on this one. They had these requirements before and cops were and still are stealing left and right. 3) Written exams I think are important. As a civil servant you need to be able to properly communicate to the public. Writing is a good indictator of that.

There's reasons standards get lowered. A lot of people don't realize how difficult the process is to become a police officer. Factor in you have very few people who want to become police in this day and age. If you have 100 people who want to join an academy and only 50 spots available, you don't have much to choose from. If you have 1000 people trying to join their are better options to choose from. It's become a take what you can get and hope they work out. BE SAFE!

Being someone whose been in the mix and in very good shape. Alot of those pt exams are not practical. I worked in one of the roughest cities in the country and never has myself or any of my partners ran 1.5 miles on a foot chase. Departments need to implement physical exams similar to DC and NYPD which include obstacle courses. When it comes to the written exams there have been studies that shown some of those scenario base type of questions are not practical there very subjective. The complaints about the credit requirement unnecessary. Having bad credit does not make someone more susceptible to stealing. Being from a department that weighed your credit score heavy there were still officers that were caught stealing. I have seen good candidates gets passed up because of PT, & Credit scores only to go to other departments and become great proactive police officers that community loves. This news report shows one of things that I hated about a job a loved. Its just a bunch of older/ignorant cops who complain because they had a harder route into the jobs. On the flip side departments all over the country lost alot of good officers because of the mishandling of cases by local governments (state attorneys, judges, politicians). This is not just a democratic issue. This is also a republican issue. Both sides are on the extreme which is why crime is up. Instead of working together they take the lazy out instead of fixing the justice system which is proven to be unfair.
