My Uncle and Godfather, Lt. Carl (Kelly) Palumbo was a Bombardier in the 8th Army Air Corps. He was shot up on his third mission. He was wounded in the leg and had plexiglass in his eye. He bailed out and landed in the sea and was rescued by Dutch fisherman. He was brought to shore and immediately captured by the Germans. He was treated by them and was always thankful that they saved his vision and treated his serious leg wound. Lt Palumbo spent the rest of WWIi as a POW until the War ended. Fortunately, Kelly returned and in just three years lead the Trenton Legion Post 93 to the American Legion Championship in 1948. He loved coaching what he affectionately called his boys. Kelly was the ultimate sports enthusiast.

Tomorrow I'm taking my youngest daughter to visit her grandpa's grave (no, he didn't pass while serving, but it's always nice to get to the cemetery). Its very important for us to remember these aircrew and all the other aircrews who made the ultimate sacrifice in WW2. My great uncle lost his life in a Liberator Mk3a (a lend lease B24D) he was an Observer serving in the RNZAF and part of 224 sqn RAF Coastal Command. He was only 24yrs old when he died, less we forget these heroes.
