I have lived in Budapest for almost 5 months last year and recently returned from 2 -week stay there. I can not but agree with most of the comments above. The Hungarians are friendly and proud without being arrogant. The city is lovely and there are practically no bums on the street like in other western EU countries...or the US. V. Orban might not be the perfect leader, but his country is like a magnet for foreigners, who are looking for a better safer life, and this speaks for itself.

The problem is that you Americans are so luxurious that you can afford only bitching about these superficial tribal distinctions of left and right and therefore I can see people on Fox praising Orban for defending conservatism in a liberal environment and see CNN criticizing him for condemning the LGBTQ community... None of those are grounded in reality and have any viability for Hungarian politics at all. @@farkas5572 I live in both countries and I think the discussion is long from “luxurious” or “tribal” or superficial lately in the US and suppressed deeply. Life standards are sinking for the middle class and a lot of us are not sure how the future will look here. At the same time I see that middle class Hungarians live a much higher living standard than middle class Americans in the past years. The difference is the attitude. In America constant complaining and victim mentality regarded as impolite and self defeating while in Hungary especially in some of the most affluent middle class circles is the norm. Also in America generally people don’t expect politics to fix all areas of their lives. Orban is a politician. A very gifted one. Of course he is doing what politicians do: try to win and get his word heard. He is also a human so he is not perfect. But you cannot deny that what he achieved the past years in unparalleled in the past century of Hungarian politics in terms of stability economy etc.

I just came home to the UAE after spending a few days in Hungary. It was a marvelous experience, totally different feel from Western Europe, the Hungarians struck me as a Christian nation. They were extremely proud of their identity and their past while being welcoming and respectful of others. I saw phenomenal statues of historical Hungarian heroes, beautiful churches, and an incredible architecture all around. They weren’t ashamed of their past “mistakes” like the Americans and the Western Europeans, they seem to accept the reality of good and evil and that nations are always built on such duality. I live in Greece, which is mainly conservative Christian, I have visited Hungary many many times, I love the country and the people. If I decided to leave Greece, Hungary would be where I would want to settle down.

Actually many Greek people came to Hungary, first in the XVIII. century after the Habsburgs defeated the Turks, and then after WWII. There are a number of greek towns, for example Μπελογιάννης, and quite a few actors, olimpian athletes, musicians, academics of Greek descent in Hungary. We even had a prime minister who was half greek, Pál Teleki. His mother was Irene Murathis, a Greek woman.
