Robbie, I'm curious to know who you think (broadly/generally) is the demographic and how you would label your own demographic? Younger/older/urban/rural/ethnic/political/fat/skinny/horrendously beautiful..who did you have in mind?
@RobbieRist3 жыл бұрын
@@jackallenproductions Well. Im 57. So much music has stopped being marketed toward me. Which is fine. It just means I have to search a little harder for new music than I had to, say, 20 years ago. I mostly know about Foxy because a friend was going to manage them at one point and he took me to a show when Oh Lord came out. I was a fan from the moment I saw them. That said, its tough to find new bands who play stuff I love the same way id did when when I was younger. Part of that is....well....I think I have at this point heard every genre of music known to man. Its tough to grab me anymore. Its why I like this band. |A lot to get grabbed by.
@jackallenproductions3 жыл бұрын
@@RobbieRist you have me beat by a few years, but I know where you're coming from. It's been odd for me growing up (in my thirties now) and never really connecting with the "music of the times". I can't remember finding an artist I really appreciated on the radio. Though I suppose even radio is a dying medium nowadays. With music equipment and production being more accessible than ever, I'm sure there are tons of newer artists I'd really enjoy- but I sure do have a hard time finding them. I suspect every genre nowadays is thriving (musically, not commercially). Will be interesting to see how the industry evolves/adapts/self-destructs going forward. I wish that meritocracy wins out and that if a band/artist is talented enough they will come across my path, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Good song, well written, well performed. The mixing on this track in particular to me..it sounds muddy. Vocals are clear enough, but most instruments are lacking a certain crispness/punch. I'm not sure if it's a compression issue where there's not enough dynamic in the volume/loudness throughout the whole song or if it's a matter of eq that is stopping instruments from sounding distinct. Maybe a lot of overlap in frequencies? I'm a songwriter, not an audio engineer, so perhaps I'm talking out of my arse- but despite liking the song, this particular mix doesn't have the same impact to me as earlier material. Or maybe I just have a buildup of earwax or my ears have dulled over the years.

Having Steve Albini record Gonzo is actually what helped me to discover Foxy Shazam to begin with. I love the sound of having the whole band performing the song together and the energy he captures. This recording has a dryness that I associate with artists recording separately then being mastered together. There's some great energy here and I'm excited at the idea that I will get to see it performed live at some point. Would rather have this recording than nothing at all but I'm left wanting a return of Albini as a recording engineer.
@Cupax10002 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with Jack. I'm a producer and I find this record to be mixed very muddy and distorted. Nothing close to excellently produced songs like "Oh Lord". I think the last really good album was Church or RNR, speaking artistically and production wise. After that, Gonzo was just awful in anyway. Now I hope Foxy would be back on old tracks, but I'm missing the crazy energy from earlier albums.
@sromnorba2 жыл бұрын
@@Cupax1000 Definitely agree too. I keep checking in because I can't find too many people like Eric Nally. Church of Rock and Roll and their self-titled feel very crisp and powerful, but everything after has been strange muddy mixes that feel really heavy in the mid range.

Love to see them back. Wild and crazy how I like them. Although I don't think it's radio material like Oh,Lord or Wannabe Angel. Too bad, they deserve all the success they can get!
@Lolasparkz2 жыл бұрын
I fell in love with this band when I heard dangerous man for the first time on the radio back in 2010. Yeah I was late to the Foxy Shazam party, but I caught up real quick and enjoyed every second of it. Now a days I'm still as hardcore in my fandom but feel a certain essence in the band is missing, like icing on a cake or sprinkles even. I'm not saying this album is bad, nor am I saying that it's the best thing since gonzo, however both albums to me share one thing specific in common. Early reception of both felt different and not in a good way, at first I thought gonzo was their artistic lowpoint. However since I've given the album and this one subsequent time to live in my head, it hit me, hard, both times. I believe without saying much more that it's fair to say these albums are sleeper hits. I loved burn, it hit me like a ton of bricks when it came out just like church of rock n roll and self titled did. Quick instant hits that felt like real rock n roll. But ahh there in lies the reality of foxy Shazam, they're not JUST a rock band, they're an experimental rock band, which means taking risk other artist wouldn't normally take. Which imo makes them incredibly unique and even groundbreaking. When I listened to this album more than half a year later it hit me, all at once, like a massive orgasmic wave of euphoria. If you're a true fan of them it probably did the same to you in one way or another, yes its production is messy and not as direct musically speaking on every song, but revisiting this album I realized it's a sleeper hitman waiting with a pillow to snuff you out just as you fall asleep. In other words it's a sleeper hit. One thing I desperately don't like about this album is the cover art work, it looks cheesey and tasteless like a cheap phone game like candy crush or bejeweled or some shit. Can't wait to see what comes next guys, I will be listening for you to shock the world again.

I read your manifesto all the way through, and I have thus to say. I've loved this band for over 10 years . There's no tragedy in their "lack" of major label success. Eric knows how to get attention, that's for sure. I think he's right where he wants to be. I am madly in love with this band and am spreading them around by word of mouth... I've made great fans thus and will continue.
