It looks like a narrow gauge logging railroad. There are still a few like this in the US, many operating as tourist railroads, such as Cass Scenic RR in West Virginia. Narrow gauge railroads have rails closer together and smaller rolling stock, and for logging they built them like this. The train you see in the beginning is using a switchback, where the train pulls into a spur, then backs up through the switch to continue uphill or downhill. It's not an efficient way to climb mountains for a large railroad but it works for small ones like this. Mountain railroads like this will use several switchbacks to climb up and down hillsides.

@Derrick M As far as I know, the bamboo railway is in Cambodia and Philippines. However, in recent years, Cambodia's railway equipment has been updated, and it is unknown whether the bamboo railway exists.

There is a light switch on the caboose. The station in the video has no signal lights, and the train conductor will give instructions to start the train. This is in Taiwan.

Thanks for watching. "Shan" is the transliteration of Chinese "山", it means "mountain". The "Ali" is the legendary name of a hunting hero of the Taiwan minority (Tsou鄒族). Legend has it that every time he goes hunting in the mountains, he always harvests a lot, so this mountain is named after him "Alishan"

There's a famous route with these reversing stub tracks in New South Wales, Australia, that was once part of the main transcontinental mainline through the Blue Mountains but has since been bypassed by tunnels. The locomotive had a driver. The man seen jumping off to throw the switch was the rear end brakeman.

A siderod diesel-electric locomotive. One axle of each truck had a traction motor and gears. The siderods conduct the torque to the other axle. Heavy railway locomotives have a traction motor and gears on each axle. 70 years ago the ALCO (American Locomotive Company) PA-1 and PB-1 had an A1A+A1A wheel arrangement with three axles in each truck. The “A” axles were powered. The “1” axles were unpowered.
