Armoring a loco isn't as easy as it seems. The wheel load of heavy fright locos usually is matched to the max wheel load the main line tracks are designed for. You can't add much to it without getting to heavy for the tracks. Especially under wartime conditions, when trains have to pass a lot of tracks that experienced damage and emergency repairs, overweight will quickly cause accidents and major damage to the tracks.

I'm retired from the railroad and depending on what kind of charge that fpv was using, will tell you that the "diesel engine," radiators and all kind of wiring is going to be toast, and that this train was not going anywhere after the hit . It's going to be down for repairs for a long time.

Unfortunately these aren't high pressure steam boilers. It would look absolutely spectacular to see a drone with a shaped charge pierce the boiler of a steam locomotive running at max pressure.
@Internetspaceships
@Internetspaceships 2 ай бұрын
I would guess most of these drones are using shape charges/RPG rounds and that would easily slice through the engine block. However this train is 2 locomotives attached to eachother so it has 2 diesel engines it can use. Also it did not seem like the drone hit the middle of the locomotive which is where the diesel engine is located. They may have destroyed alot in the first locomotive, but the second one was untouched unless the whole thing caught fire. It is a good idea to send a drone swarm after these trains.

Think Kerch Bridge, dockyards, oil refineries, etc. Obviously, there's still a matter of choice in setting tighter 'rules of engagement' to reduce/minimise risks for civilians and Ukraine has a track-record of doing so... even in that video the FPV strike is not made head-on on the cab area.

Note that this is a railway with only one set of rails. Stopping a train here will stop all traffic there until the damaged train is pulled away... which doesn't take long, but is still a huge hassle. If Ukraine manages to set such a train on fire, the damage to the rails will easily stop all traffic for weeks, given how hard it is to remove the burned out train cars and replace the completely warped rails... ...especially while within HIMARS range.

Depends. If it causes the whole thing to go up in flames yes. If it just causes it to spill the diesel and grind to a halt, not really, as tanks are easy to repair. Making the engine block crack is a complete write-off, and causing electrical fire is grounds for a serious repair job.

While that setup probably would lower the risk of a mine blowing up the locomotive, you'd think it would derail about 1 sec later due to bits of track in front of it just having joined the Russian space program. The location you highlighted on that locomotive probably are where the radiators are. Hit them, diesel overheats… end of locomotive. It’s actually probably the best point of attack. I just got a vision of a US commander getting orders to carry out some operation and having to reject it because there was no rail transport in the region. It's odd that Muscovites don't understand that at core their army and its logistics are primarily defensive. I'm wondering why the Russian bordering nations don't change all their rail gauges from Russian to standard European. Defensively that would really help throttle Muscovy aggression while fully integrating the Eastern nations rail with rest of Europe. I know there's a project to do some standard gauge mainline in Baltic nations but I don't believe it's the full rail network. This would also slow or eliminate the rail link to Koenigsberg (incorrectly named something like kaliningrad on Muscovy maps but since history determines current land rights it's obviously a German enclave). Kant was from there.😢

@@asmo1313 it can be done in blocks. Not all at once. It's a lot cheaper than wasting billions fighting imperialist Russian aggressors then having them use your rail lines to move their military cargos. Only the bogies need to be changed. Cars basically just sit on top of them unless it's old fashioned euro style but I doubt those fixed 2 axle cars are used anymore. I think it's an 8 or 9 cm difference. Wood sleepers can probably just be respiked and points pulled, rebuilt, and replaced. Railroad track laying equipment is really efficient. Concrete sleepers probably have to be replaced.

Why not have the drones simply place a magnetic mine on the tracks? When a train is spotted then fly to a point 1 or 2 km in front and place the mines. When the train moves over the mines, the sensors detect the mass of metal above it and detonates the mine. 😁 The mines could have a short delay too so they detonate under the 2nd, 3rd, 4th carriage. 😁😁

7,000 to 10,000 freight locomotives for all of Russia. $2 to $3+ million each, long lead item, hard to defend, hard to hide and easy to locate. Don't know the schedule? Drop a sound or vibration sonde along the track right of way that can transmit the time, intensity, speed and duration. Big drones could drop baby drones along the right of way and hard to see, ready to spring into action when the locomotive passes and unprepared for an attack. Far away from cities and industry, the locomotives will be a standout because of the noise, exhaust temp and movement.

A diesel locomotive would be a pretty tough nut to crack with a FPV drone at long distance when the signal degrades and precision becomes impossible. Precise targets would be the control cabin (pity the civilian driver), engine cooling system, turbocharger to provoke a runaway engine (ineffective in the case of dual units), air couplings to set off uncontrollable braking (drone drop might be more effective), fuel tanks with an incendiary warhead with a second drone strike on one of the tanker cars to lay a trail of fuel to ignite and torch off the entire train. Easy to imagine but very much harder in reality.

Depending on the type of fuel, it might be better to *not* stop the train. If they get a car near the front to start draining out burning fuel, that might be able to damage the rest of the train without further munitions and also damage an extended stretch of the tracks. Also, if the cargo is valuable enough, you might be ahead to avoid hurting the crew in hopes that will avoid further motivation for the crew to put effort into defense.

If the Ukrainians mined the tracks, all they need is a short timer fuse to allow the leading flatbed car to pass by before detonation. Those trains are not high speed so a hit any place would be good.

Diesel engines are not that plentiful and repairs take time. Replacements have a very long lead time for delivery. Taking out some trestles over large rivers or valleys would also take time to repair and slow deliveries to the front.

Yep, I've often wondered why, given Russia's reliance on trains for their logistics, Ukraine doesn't after these trains in transit. There must be a reason, although the only reason I can think of is Russia adds their logistics to a train carrying civilians?. ......

they need to design a drone that can carry 30 pounds far enough to safely put an anti tank mine on the tracks if the metal of the tracks wont disrupt the mine detecting the train. that would destroy the train engine

The first thought I have is that hitting it on the roof where they did might not do much. But hit it in the radiator/cooling fans and you could potentially take out the entire engine.

Question to someone smarter than me: Wouldn't it have made more sense to target the tank wagon right behind the locomotive? Potential for a bigger explosion and even if the locomotive can escape, the whole rest of the train would have been detatched and becomes a free target.

You'll notice how the video of the drone gets all full of static -- that's the Russians attempting to jam it. It's likely they have their best electronic jammers protecting the RR tracks all along its route. Ukraine obviously found a weak spot.

Most railroads over Russian topography require a bridge every few kilometers. How in the heck are those bridges still functional after over two years of war???
@sjonnieplayfull5859
@sjonnieplayfull5859 2 ай бұрын
most trains stop before they are in artillery range. Drones did not have as much range then as they have now. So any bridge in use by trains would be far beyond that range. Also note that bridges are mostly build from massive amounts of steel and/or stone. Hard to destroy that, as the American Airforce found out in Vietnam: There was one bridge they attacked with over a hundred planes, all with tons of guided munitions. Most hit the target. The bridge stood for 20 more years...

Bridges are also useful for the counterattack though likely Russia would destroy them during a retreat but perhaps not all of them.

30 km from the front line... very long range FPV-strike. Seems the spotter drone was relaying the attacking drone´s signal. Also, one can see the attacker drone´s shadow shortly before impact. Looks odd to me.

Why dont they mine the train connections? Allows to reuse the drones. They can add a delay fuse so it will launch on a wagon after the first one (which might be empty)

Not sure the warhead used on the drones is strong enough to cause enough damage to sever the rails. Taking out a locomotive is a more time consuming and costly repair as well. Though I see your point that a complete train derail would potentially destroy more equipment and tie up the line for a while. My guess is they can't fly a powerful enough charge to do it.

The US Army tested this in 1944, kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5jdn414nrCSeNU It is really really hard to derail a train, even a meter wide gap in a single rail won't do it.

oof; if Russia can run trains that close to the front, that shows they are not afraid of getting them destroyed. Ukraine has capabilities to strike all the way to the sea of Azov so trains shouldn't be running without huge risk. wonder if it was testing the tracks or something
