FPV P-51D Mustang, Rain cloud surfer

My holidays ruined by rainy weather, driving almost half hour from home just to get here empty handed is not going to happen. Just hit the rain and let em wet. Btw this small P-51D horsey have been through worse days before. Throughout the flight its nice to hear those rain drops hitting the foamy surface of the plane and enjoy the cold morning breeze on top of the clouds...as usual. By the time its get drizzle a lot its time to land and rush for nice hot chocolate waffle and coffee for breakfast.

Would suck if the camera lense got wet n you couldnt see lol...i love flying my p51 in the rain!!! Had it 3 years the paint is coming off now though and foam getting brittle....shes getting older smh...nice flight dude

Thanks for your compliments. Glad you're also a Mustang fan. :) If the lens wet i can still fly without visual using OSD intrumental layout that shows direction, heigth and distance value etc.

I got a question, would doing this on a larger airframe be possible? Because I want to make a p47 thunderbolt, but it has a wingspan of 1220mm and is very lightweight relative to its size, from what I’ve heard.

Yes you can do it on larger air frame beyond 1220mm wingspan. P47 wings design are very efficient wing lift. Any modern flight controller/Auto Pilot can handle it well after some PID tuning.

Thanks, to keep my plane from possible lost i use directional antenna so i know the direction where my plane went relative from home base. A Patch antenna and a helical. Then theres an OSD that shows the position of the plane on HUD. Also plane has GPS fpr RTH return to home feature if i get into trouble. Fortunately i never used that for many years. 👍

Awesome flight. Good flight time too for a small mustang like that. I can't wait to get my Bix3 above some low clouds this winter. What FPV system are you using? and how does the moisture from the clouds affect it?

I'm using very old boscam 5.8ghz 200mw module that comes with huge heatsink. Don't worry about the cloud moisture it won't affect much on the video frequency especially when you fitted with tuned cloverleaf antenna and patch. I flown many wet and heavy clouded flight with open electronics expose to wet condition, no problem. Water in clouds is non conductive at certain level because its non-salt..very sterile water.

Thanks, there is an OSD but its not recorded/not included during HD recording. It has arrow, height and distance towards base in live FPV view. I had that video few pages back. You can check the old videos. :)

Just try to glide around using flow of wind above (the higher the altitude the more efficient the power consumption to float around) and lower the throttle between 20~30% thrust because the prop pitch size have enough torque to pull the plane forward with limited power.

I have a question, would adding a extension cable to my rc transmitter add any problems or latency? I fly fpv from my roof but there are some buildings in the way, I want to mount my antenna a little higher. Would an sma extension cable help? Also great vid I really love ww2 warbirds

Adding long wire extension to video receiver high above the roof building connecting FPV monitor down into building will not cause any lantency delays, however adding long antenna extension away from video receiver to antenna lobe/patch will results in lost antenna DBI value sensitivity.

Same also applies to transmitter controller, if the antenna extension plug to plug is too long the DBI radio sensitivity will lost. Yes booster will helps but highly recomended using proper antenna for long range for example Yagi antenna or Patch then followed by booster.

Cable to antenna or cable to the transmitter, if cable from controller to transmitter its ok. Else if transmitter to antenna then you'll lost from DBI value but you won't notice much difference on 1M cable.

No problem, the flight controller will compensate any rough winds in the clouds. Its been going in and out of clouds for more than 8 years without any problem..smooth flight. :)

@@ground41 Depends on the wing design and the weight of the plane. Bigger planes flies steady above 1200mm wingspan. Smaller plane like mine below 960mm a bit rough and need compensation from flight controller.

Nope, its not but it does have option to add one but i prefer not to add extra weight. Sometime when landing there are moment you forgot too, lol.

Yes aerodynamic would improve but when compare between having weight on retract vs static downward lading gear the weight of retract have immense effect on this plane, i have the same plane with retracts..didn't worked out well. Stock static landing gear still very curvy and breaks wind nicely just like its young brother the Pitts Special with less drag provided the scale flat landing cover removed.

Makes total sense, mate! One more question. I've seen it was clearly raining. Isn't that a bit of a risk of frying something inside the Mustang or does the frame/fuselage do a good job in isolating the electronics well enough for it to fly in such conditions?

Depends what kind of battery size i lug inside the plane, max known distance on FPV is 5~7km for P-51D and altitude is unlimited with patch antenna on vrx. If helical antenna on vrx usually i fly 8~15km. You can check out other old video to check it out. Latest video range become much shorter because antenna underneath the plane corroded/rusty after years of flying so performance not as good as early days.
