The young star of Icelandic literature, Frída Ísberg, shares her thoughts on writing today: "In our part of the world, a lot of privileged writers have left the political debates, "she says and adds, "I hate that society is always splitting into two warring armies," highlighting the need for open dialogue.
Frída Ísberg delves into the complexities of literature, politics, and societal discourse in this interview. Isberg challenges the notion of binary thinking, emphasizing the importance of exploring the grey areas and fostering dialogue.
Reflecting on the intersection of literature and politics, Ísberg asserts, "I don't think that literature is outside from the political debate. And I do think that literature should participate in our current affairs." She challenges writers to engage with pressing social issues, urging them to reclaim the mantle of intellectual inquiry and critical reflection.
Ísberg's insights extend to the craft of writing itself as she discusses her approach to storytelling and the creation of multi-dimensional narratives. From her exploration of future societies to her reflections on parenthood and creativity, Isberg offers a relevant perspective on the intersection of literature and life.
Frída Ísberg (B. 1992) Her books are the poetry collections Stretch Marks and Leather Jacket Weather, the short story collection Itch, and most recently, the novel The Mark, which won The Fjara Literature Prize, The Icelandic Booksellers Award, the P.O. Enquist Award, and she is the 2021 recipient for The Optimist Award, handed by the President of Iceland to one national artist. Frída Ísberg is a member of the writer's collective Svikaskáld, and she occasionally writes reviews for The Times Literary Supplement. Her work is being translated into 17 languages.
Frída Ísberg was interviewed by Emma Holten in August 2023 in connection with the Louisiana Literature festival, at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark.
