Very powerful message Father. I would like to add something to your sermon. People who don't talk, walk, see or hear are not mistakes or less fortunate or not enough. They are different, equal, valid, full and whole humans with equal rights and a right to be respected, accepted and included. Disabled people are seen as other, as less, as defective versions and that the only valid, true and accepted way to exist is as a walking, talking, seeing, hearing person and if you’re not all those things then there’s something wrong and you are pitied. Our society thinks that way and such thinking is passed on to next generation. And that's why we need to educate our next generation so that they do not buy into these "made up" ideas that society have created about "one true human". No one is perfect. Only Jesus is perfect. Disability is a NORMAL and natural part of the human condition. There are two ways to think about disability. One way of thinking about disability is through a lens of diversity and inclusion (known as the ‘Social Model of Disability’) and the other way is through a lens of deficits and needing 'fixing' (known as the ‘Medical Model of Disability’). The medical model see disabled people as broken, as having something wrong with them, and that it was this broken thing that caused all their problems, that disabled them. They needed to be fixed, or failing that, to be pitied or to be carried as a burden by society. The social model, by contrast, distinguished impairment from disability. The impairment is the person’s shortfall in functioning, their medical condition. Their disability is the obstruction put in their way by society. It is society which disables people with an impairment. The social model acknowledges ‘that disability results from the interaction between persons with impairments and attitudinal and environmental barriers that hinders their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.’ A simple example: a blind person wishes to read a book at the local library, but can not find a book that she can read. The medical model says that she can’t read a book because she is blind, that her blindness is her disability. The social model says that blindness is her impairment, and that her disability is the failure of the library to provide books in audio or Braille formats for her to read. The medical model says that there is something wrong with the blind person; the social model says that there is something wrong with the library. The medical model offers only a future cure for blindness as a solution; the social model offers removal of the disabling barrier by getting the library to stock Braille and audio books. Which lens people see through has a big impact on how they think about, how they regard and treat people and how accepting or not accepting they are of other disabilities. We need a world that is more friendly to a range of differences or disabilities. People who can't talk, walk, see or hear are not mistakes or less fortunate. They are the voice of God in the wilderness.
