That plant already had leaks through that river. It was a huge deal in Pittsburgh when it was released that they knew but never reported it. Now it's silent I'm guessing hush-hush money is the reason.

Fracking always reminds me of the cartoon of a man cutting off a tree branch while sitting on it. Fracking is extremely damaging to the environment for a product that has a declining demand. The glut of oil on the international market may make fracking uneconomic. It seems very unlikely that oil demand is going to return to pre Covid-19 levels. The price of oil is down 30% on the year.

@@frankzappa9148 there is the little matter of a war. There is not actually a shortage of oil, but the oil producers have seen an opportunity to make money while there is still a market for their product. They will not want the war to end soon. However, the longer it lasts the greater the likelihood that alternatives will be used to replace fossil fuels. This will accelerate the use of green technologies, it may also see oil production being circumscribed for the use of the producer nations, for example the UK. The choice for the oil companies will be either no licence to drill or an agreement to supply the national need.

@@frankzappa9148 befor the war, covid recovery was the reason for the oil shortage. The war has made it worse. But there can be no doubt that the oil producers know their product is reaching the end of its life, and are making as much profit as they can while there is still a demand. Make no mistake, global warming has not gone away and is an exertential threat, as will be come increasingly evident up during the seasonal extremes in each part of the world. The large land masses, such as Europe, China, the US and Australia, will experience growing numbers of climate related disasters, to the point where governments will be forced to react.
@frankzappa9148

@@nigeljohnson9820 what qualifies as a climate disaster? As we sure that’s it’s not just……weather? And perhaps it is coming to its end. But our infrastructure revolves around it right now. Before we flip the switch to renewables we have to build the switch. Which I’m cool with building the switch but we’re just not they’re yet and we won’t be anytime soon. To build that kind of infrastructure in our huge nation and then the world is no small feat it will take decades to fulfill. That’s just being realistic. We’re just not there yet the technology just isn’t there yet. I live in Pennsylvania it’s cloudy like 75% of the time. Not real interested in cutting down more of our forests that will dominate the landscape. How else would we? Not everyone is on board with nuclear. We’re starting to develop problems recognizing these immediate affects on people now aren’t we? You’re talking about saving climate disaster at the expense of everything else. Life is short and my life is being made harder through no fault of my own and all those that I know. What if you’re wrong? What if for the next 30, 40, 80, 100 years……..nothing really happens with the climate? Our coasts more or less remain the same, it’s not all that hot or cold. It’s more or less the same as it is today? 100 years for our earths history is basically nothing. It’s hardly a measurable length of time when you look at it that way. The truth is is that if anything is going to destroy the humanity it’s assuredly ourselves. That’s the real emergency facing us.

Fracking is both things environmental issue, and necessary for energy and jobs. It's a huge thing to grapple with and no-one is going to walk in and cut off those necessary things. But maybe they'll look into the industry and see if they can make something better about it. There's experts in that field maybe they'll listen if there's something to be done. No-one knows how long that would take. Remember when you pay your electric bill largely something not good for the environment was used to generate that power. That's one example it's way broader than one industry. You have to consider what all of the places that use the generated power use it for. This administration coming has a huge job of righting this nation again. That's going to take a lot of effort. You already know what this administration has done about a lot of things. Lasting good significant change comes with time and effort.

Drippy_ Tanner if you’re thinking clean energy in terms of “windmills” then yeah, I can see how you would be confused. How about in terms of smaller home-use wind turbines in the shape of a cylinder? A few feet in diameter and roughly 10ft off the ground. Combine that with a few strategically placed solar panels and battery storage and each home is a self sufficient power plant. Also free energy to charge the family fleet of electric cars. All this is currently in existence and only improving with time. Some machinery and large vehicles may still need gas for combustion: E85 ethanol. Keep the corn farmers in business through the banning of high fructose corn syrup while also producing home grown USA biofuel.

Didn't get to hear much perspective for someone on the other side of the coin. Wonder why? 1. This is an ethylene CRACKING facility, not FRACKING. A little different although there is still need for underground/above ground transportation to bring the process fluid on site. There's always going to be environmental risk for any type of development. Period. Wind, solar and hydro, do you really think those come at no cost to the environment? 2. I'm willing to bet that any oil on that site (pumps, motors, transformers, storage tanks) has a secondary containment that will capture the oil and prevent runoff to streams, the river, storm drains, ground water. I'd also wager that there are spill stations throughout the site used to mitigate spills of mobile containers. Do you think Shell really wants the negative publicity from a completely preventable accident? 3. That "water resevoir" is the Ohio River, lol. 4. Mr. Mayor dude, tell your constituents that there is a 2 year program at a community college that is VERY local to the area that was specifically designed to work at this very facility. You'll get a job if 1) you are qualified for the position and 2) you apply for the position and sell yourself in the interview. Guess what? I'm white, I met the qualifications, I went through the application process, guess who got rejected? I can't believe they didn't hire me! I mean, I'm white! Like hello! But seriously, do you want shell hiring unqualified people to run this facility? You know, the people directly responsible for the safe operation of it. The ones who will prevent and mitigate disaster. Its more than "jobs vs. The environment," people.

Other than the fact a lot of this is speculation assuming your right comparing the environmental impact of hydro solar and wind to fossil fuels is ludicrous, as well as the fact that fossil fuels have the most deaths per unit of energy produced and that they are non renewable is why we should be making the switch over to nuclear and Green energy
