A little departure from usual videos, i thought i would try my hand at biomedical engineering during this global lockdown :-). I broke my Patella and i'm ignoring the doctors advice to rehab it my own way.
This will be a journey i thought some of you might appreciate. I'll upload a progress video every 2 weeks until i'm fully recovered.

Bro. Thanks for providing this. Broke my patellar as well. I’m opting against surgery. Unlike you, my knee was quite displaced, but - like you- I’ve researched how bones repair and as I’ve already seen good progress on day 4. I’ll be happy to follow Mother Nature. I’ll be following your vlogs so they are in parallel with my own experience

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I broke my right patella walking into work 2 weeks ago. Surgery involving pins and wire was performed 10 days ago. The pain was difficult 48-72 hours post surgery, but then it subsided noticeably, and now I feel much better, save for moderate tightness. I want to be smart and safe with my rehabilitation, but I also want to sort of push the envelope with the healing process. I really enjoy my work as a full time Grocery store employee. I cashier, stock shelves and help organize product in the back receiving room (using hand jacks and Big Joe Power Lifts) Thus, it’s fairly physical especially at 45-50 hrs a week. I also love jogging, which I really miss already. So I have huge incentive to get mobile and strong again, but even moderate activity would be great. My surgeon wants me to lay low without much activity at all for the first two weeks. Then he said I can begin physical therapy. The PT will involve range of motion and mild/moderate weight bearing. So my goal right now is to get back to work at the grocery store (even at partial capacity) and to resume light slow jogging again, the ladder of which is like a medicine for me. Thanks again for making your video, it was very informative -Dwight (from Gloucester MA)

Hey! Hopefully you still check this as I would love some advice hehe... Your videos have been a source of inspiration ever since I fractured my patella 4 weeks ago (similar to you, no surgery needed), ever since week 2, I´ve been trying to do light exercises without mobilizing the knee (as I felt it a bit sore) to not lose too much muscle mass and after week 3 (and with doctors permission) I took my brace off and started rehab to regain movement on my knee. I can now sit down with my legs on the floor and walk a little, the only thing is, I still have swelling in the knee and at nights some positions make it painful to sleep in.. In your experience, would you say that this is normal? Don´t feel pain sitting down or even walking, but when I have my leg in a certain position past 10 min for example, I do feel some pain, I´m just worried that I´m not rushing the process of getting better.

I’m glad the videos helped. That’s why I wanted to put them up 👍🏾. From my memory, there was always pain for the first weeks lol. Especially in certain positions and when trying to sleep as you described. Just try and avoid the positions which give pain until you’re a little more healed. Rehab will fix that. I would say don’t worry about the muscle, you’re going to lose it while the healing is happening, but you’ll also be able to gain again quite quickly.

The important thing right now is getting range of motion back. Strength comes later

I fractured my patella about 2 weeks ago, and am going in for surgery in a couple days. My bone was split in half, and the parts were pretty far from eachother so he is having to put a screw in my knee. This video gives me a lot of hope that I will be walking very soon.

That's partly why i wanted to document the process, so i'm glad it gives you a little. Just make sure you give your body what it needs to heal - good nutrition and the right rehab and you'll be fine. I guess i was lucky that i didn't need surgery but the approach i took in these videos worked very well for me and i made a full recovery so take from that what you will :-)

@@mr.d4771 i’m walking and starting to practice jogging and skipping in physical therapy. My knee actually ended up being in a lot more than two pieces, it was completely shattered. The surgeon had to take out almost half my knee cap and wrap the rest in wire. Im recovering well though! I would definitely recommend investing in a stationary bike, that and physical therapy have helped me the most

I didn't have surgery so i'm not able to comment so much. I would just recommend moving as much as possible without experiencing too much pain.. Discomfort is ok, pain isn't!
