Richard Sharpe. The only character badass enough to survive being played by Sean Bean.

I love how Captain Leroy admirably took charge and kept the men in line. He'd never know what Sharpe had in mind, so seeing him run like that surely could make anyone piss their pants. Probably knew he wasn't bailing on the battle, but still, leaving the line like that and leaving less men to fight the advancing French. He held his cool. A fine Officer indeed -- many, many times more so than his superior.

@@robertnett9793 That's the point: he survives by hiding behind others and fleeing. and getting others killed. This series showed the REALITY of the system of hereditary titles, as producing corrupt, incompetent and cowardly leaders. Sanderson is the true villain of the series; and in the end he just gets away with it as a general stationed in India in "Sharpe's Revenge" (2008). The seris "Sharpe" overall showed the REALITY of the system of hereditary titles, as producing corrupt, incompetent and cowardly leaders, while soldiers were treated as slaves and cannonfodder. Sanderson was of high birth, so he inherited his title and could do no wrong in the king's eyes.

Interesting Wellington knew exactly what was going to happen. Why he put Sharpe with Simmerson.. He knew Simmerson would cut and run. Leaving Sharpe to take control..Sharpe was going to get his Eagle. Wellington gets promoted. As well Sharpe gets promoted for it. They both got something out of it...On top of the Victory... That was what Hogan didn't know. Why Wellington loved Sharpe. He knew he would do his duty and keep his oath....
@SantomPh
@SantomPh 3 жыл бұрын
Sharpe was attached to the South Essex, so he really had nowhere else to go. He was given that post because Wellington couldn't keep him as a Captain without some merit to the promotion. The men already whispered about an oath to Lennox to get the eagle in exchange for the colors Simmerson lost, so Wellington has to put Sharpe there otherwise he would lose face. If Sharpe died, Wellington would be off the hook, but if he survived and did help win the battle, would have cemented his promotion and made him a useful pawn for Wellington.

@Kabuki Kitsune Drummers we’re actually always in combat though they didn’t stay in the front rank. They were in the centre of a colum or at the rear of a line. They, in every army, were armed with a sword at least. Most were the same age as their fellow soldiers and only a few being boys. It was true that drummer BOYS when captured were sometimes treated slightly kinder than others but they were also targets for sharp shooters. Officers, NCOs and musicians were vital to command and control so shooting at them was part of destroying a units ability to relay orders/communicate.

@paladinsix9285
@paladinsix9285 4 жыл бұрын
He had a Title (member of the minor nobility), and as I recall a Member of Parliament (or had one "in his pocket"). It would have been a "Political" act for Wellington to Courts Martial Simmerson. Wellington's position was already politically fraught (historically, Wellington was Relieved of Command for a bit more than a year; then returned to command on "The {Iberian} Peninsula"). This was why Wellington later Administratively decreed the 1st Battalion of the South Essex to be a "battalion of Detachments; since they were not getting any replacements from the Regimental Depot. He did not have the Political capital to spare to Relieve Simmerson of Command, let alone Courts Martial him. The "purchase system ended during the Napoleonic Wars period (yes, Multiple Wars c.1794-1815). Great Britain/the United Kingdom prospered greatly during this time period, mostly because they were the leading edge of the "Industrial Revolution"; also, they were the pre-eminent Maritime Trading power. Previously, the price of Commissions was a minor, but significant part of the British Military Budget! Parliament had to Purchase Back ALL of the Commissions that were currently held (Officers not only Purchased their Commission, they usually had to Purchase their Commission as well!) Perhaps 10% of officers were Promoted from the Ranks (as was Sharpe); perhaps 20% of promotions were on Merit, the rest were Purchased (from whomever currently held it). Promotions on merit usually required a Vacancy (due to being killed, wounded so badly (or so ill) they couldn't serve for some time, and a replacement was needed). Engineering and Artillery Officers were Professionals, and were Not in the purchase system, its also why the Line (Cavalry and Infantry Officers saw them as inferior); Medical and Logistics Officers were Warrant Officers (held a Warrant, not a Commission), and were part of their Branch/Corps, and not the "Royal Army, per se. If this seems odd, remember in the American Civil War, less than 100 Cadets from the US Army Military Academy at West Point were Commissioned Lieutenants each year (actually, closer to 50, than 100). Most of the Infantry and Cavalry Regiments were Militia, and Volunteered for Federal service from 90 day, to a year, later up to 3 years. A few officers were Appointed by the Governor of the State (often trading political favors), (such as Colonel Robert Gould Shaw CO of the 54th Massachusetts) others were Elected by their peers. Some of them were previous graduates of West Point (Ulysses S. Grant), or of VMI ("Stonewall" Jackson; actually an Instructor at VMI in 1860), or Norwich Military Academy (now Norwich University), in New York State. If a person could Recruit enough Volunteers (sometimes paying them Bounties), and especially if they could afford to Uniform and Equip them; they would be made the Colonel of the Regiment! (Or Lieutenant Colonel, sometimes) (A few were Made Captain or Major for raising and outfitting a Company.)

The French (In the books) marched in column, meaning only the first two ranks and the four men on the flanks could fire their muskets. It was a scare tactic mainly. Again in the books, the British fought in line each man could fire their muskets at three times a minute, theoretically battering any French column. However if the French managed to get into a line (it's nasty. In Sharpe's Eagle and Waterloo it is demonstrated)

@mfrost71w
@mfrost71w 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but that's what they did. The sight of a massive French column marching on a thin line scared all the allied armies of Europe into running away (like Simmerson), except the British. Wellington laid his troops down so the initial artillery bombardment had little effect and then stood them up when the French column started, intending to punch through the British line to allow the French Cavalry in behind. The British line would stand and not run and shoot the absolute bejesus out of the French column until it collapsed. Wellington did this again and again from 1809 to 1815 and the French never changed their tactics against him, not even at Waterloo where Wellington was afraid of facing the genius of Napoleon but to his surprise found "they came on in the same old way". This was despite Marshall Soult, who had lost every battle against Wellington in Spain, warning Napoleon that his columns would not make the British run, saying "you can't defeat the English except by utterly destroying them"

You did it because your mates did it. That is what was expected from soldiers at that time. It's the same for the Union Soldiers who kept marching into the Guns at Fredericksburg 50 years later, or the Confederates on the Third day at Gettysburg. It the same reason soldiers went over the top at The Somme, Ypres, and Verdun. Sean Bean once talked to soldiers from the modern day Coldstream Gaurds. That was their answer to how men could stand and face the enemy, or March like that into almost certain death or wounding. It comes down to training, and not being willing to let your fellow soldiers and friends down.
