The Tome seems good in theory, but in practice, for it to be useful, you need 3 tomes, and by the time you get to 3 tomes, you'll have gotten way better uncommon items, I'd rather have the upgrade that just gets rid of common items entirely, since uncommons are always 2x as good as their common version (but some upgrades only spawn in white so you'll never see those in that run if you get rid of commons)

@@stone5against1 Here's how to play tomes: You start off with a lot of souls so you can roll for appraisal. Works even better with the challenge hat because you can get double items. Once you have 3 you roll for luck. Once you have 5 luck you can get purples after every level. You then go for Tome 20 times. Then you start getting whites. +2 damage? It's now +16 damage.

The Tome says NEW common items which to me means it is not being applied to anything you already have.

One of my favorite combinations is Frag and Wound together. So much chain reaction. Looks like fireworks. That first build you had, plus one or two levels in wound, will carry you really far. Wound deals Wound Level * times hit by any projectile damage per second, and at level 3 it's 2 times per second. So one random enemy blowing up in the crowd with lots of frag causes so much bleed so fast that the fireworks come from random places. Very fun build.

Lightning is actually pretty good. Not only does each stock of it increase how often it fires, it also increases the damage, Combine that with the first hit is always a crit, many +50% crit damage, and the lightning staff and everything dies from rapid fire lightning. I've seen this build make it to round 90+.

the lightning wand works with the Lightning ascension ( 300% damage to lightning strikes ) and then just stack attack speed and crit damage multiplier

My go to build is the ice staff, which penetrates enemies, with the bleed. The dots build up to some huge numbers pretty quick.

This game has potential, but in order to make any actual progress you need to either take advantage of the Reroll ascension that's clearly not meant to work multiple times, and the hat that gives you the possibility to gain double stacks, or abuse how you you can jump up to the top of the screen and teleport back to the middle. Otherwise the furthest you'll likely get is the 45~55 range.

@@tickiwaw It's very easy to not get cards that you're looking for. I've gone 20 waves before not getting a single offensive option. Also if a single card is responsible for getting you that far, that means the others are underwhelming and doesn't encourage you to explore other options.

Just have to know what to do man. Get 5 luck upgrades as soon as you can, and then get tomes and defense ups until you take zero damage, its pretty damn easy after a while. Also stacking Fragmentation is easy to clear the map for a long time.

Seems to me like Cloak is the real under-appreciated gem here... the shield only takes one hit, the cloak effectively takes several as you run thru the barrage while invincible.

To make builds work, you need to get 3 Appraisals (+1 choice each level) to unlock infinite rerolls. And you want 5 levels of Dice, to unlock the potential for epics. And then, you can farm like, 10-20 of the Tomes that make commons better, so you can get insane boosts from them. If you have that many and then start getting the 4% dmg reduction, you're nearly invincible. Nearly..... But even when you do that, the only 2 builds I've figured out are: 1. Thunder Staff + Lightning + Attack Speed + Crit chance/dmg 2. Ice Staff -> Bleed -> Minions -> Crit chance/dmg

What seems like an amazing combo is barrier and cloak? Barrier protects you for the odd hit, then cloak makes you invulnerable for a couple seconds after a hit? Get trapped in a corner and just run and tank the damage type of vibes

Cloak + high leech and moderate HP is great. IF you ever take a hit you can heal up before you get hit again.

Thunderbolt works great with the thunderbolt Staff. Combine it with tons of crit and it does insane damage, you just struggle against the melee enemies.

Hey Tom, if you take Appraise three times, on the third one, it will evolve into Dealer which gives you free rerolls, basically letting you pick what you want! Also, if you get six stacks of Luck, it will evolve and give you a chance of getting epic (purple) items in normal rounds instead of just once every 5 rounds!

Tom you keep getting attack speed but that doesn't change fragmentation. Attack damage boosts fragmentation projectiles too.

The "Burning Man" Devine perk may be the thing this build needs... That will use the melee enemies to start the chain reaction. Also, ya know, the pathing bugs could also help... Love this game. Picked it up after the first episode, and have already sunk well over 50 hours into it... Thanks, again, for helping me to find a monetary sink lol

The difference in playing this for fun as a roguelike vs getting to wave 90+ is sad how you have to do it I played for all 8 achievements after Tom's last video and man.. I hope Tom doesn't do that bcus it's not fun at that point. context: you can just choose any upgrade you want at any point for free for 90-99% of the run with 20% chance for double cards resulting in "regular" gameplay being like 1% of your potential and each run takes over an hour with getting wave 200+ is like 10 minutes a wave. for anyone curious about how to get "started" farm for the challenger's hat, get appraisal x2 at the first wave, stack luck till you have a epic cards show up and get your last appraisal and then you can just stack whatever you want; or in this case... get 10 tomes and souls upgrades after your damage/health/defense is good enough and you can get well over 1,000 souls in 1 run.

If you use lightning and high attack speed, it goes WAY faster. I tend to only use the normal hat, but it takes maybe 20 minutes to get to 90.

@@seanmcgalliard2957 even when your lightning is doing 7K with 600% atk speed things will just sit there for several seconds taking it on the chin, most of your damage at end level is reflection. Lightning gets you thru 1-60 pretty fast but doing perfect rng runs just takes too long and it's a real fun killer. The reason most high scores are 150-160 is because they just gave up

Aren't the green cards 100% better than the white ones? So only with 3 tomes they get better. (If the tomes would work retroactively, which they don't according to the text)

Yeah that's what I was thinking, it's a waste of upgrades, and you need to actually have the tome show up 3 times for it to be any useful, and they only show up every 5 rounds with the other purples, which are usually way more useful than the tome is.

Love this game. I've got a single run that has been going for a full week now. The game really isn't happy with all the physics calculations. I'm on wave 220 and aiming for the top of the leaderboard. Hopefully in the next week or so I'll reach my goal.

The best build for longterm in this game (And the most boring) is to stack up Thorns damage, it scales really damn well. So if you get thorns + defense eventually you just idle through the game until you get bored.

I don't quite understand the confusion with tome... The wording is pretty explicit. It says "common items you pick up". Without the "pick up" part I could see it being confusing. Plus, the moment you buy a tome well into the game, you'd really feel the difference the moment you clicked it.

One of the hats you unlock allows you to reroll as much as you want. think it's the fedora maybe? Anyway, with that you can try out super powerful builds, maxing out one thing to see what exactly it does at max level. Maxed out explosions and thunderbolts are a pretty good way to kill enemies fast.

The best way to pull off the Tomb build is getting 3 Appraisals for the free refresh on cards, then getting 5 Lucks so you can roll a chance for an epic item. From then on you only take Tombs until you have like 20 then you just go white items and become an unkillable god.
