Great exercises Ken. This helps a lot as I have been trying to apply a lot of my tabla phrases to frame drum. I think the 1-3-1-3 KTTK is the hardest especially on bigger frame drums. I hadn't thought the S-3-1-3, that's a good one to practice. Beautiful drum too...14 inch Cooperman? I'm having a 14 inch bendir being made right now. I love their drums.

Thanks for the kind words! Yes Cooperman makes such beautiful drums. You're going to love your bendir when you get it!

Great tutorial ! I have a question, the Dum is played with the thumb or 3 fingers?
@kenshorley2 жыл бұрын
Hi Pablo. The Doum can be played a number of ways. In this video, Doum is played with the thumb. Glad you enjoyed the video!

I bought a unique looking wooden drum at a second hand shop a short while back. It is a centre bulging cylinder shape, with animal skin on both ends. About 20 inches in length and the drum face is the size of a typical saucer. I am finding it incredibly difficult to position and play on my lap with both hands. Any idea on the type or drum it is? I’d love to be able to play it correctly lol. Thanks mate 👍

It's hard for me to know without a photo but it sounds like you're describing a naal or some type of dholak. If so these are often meant to be played in a cross-legged position rather than balancing it on the lap. You can also try securing a strap around the drum to help stabilize it.

@@kenshorley Thanks, Ken. I looked at pictures of your two types and yes, it is a Dholak. Thank you very much. Now I’ve got to figure out how to play it comfortably. Appreciate your reply, best wishes 👍🇦🇺

I have no idea why I am having such a hard time with split hand. I cannot split my hand in a way that allows me to play a bit faster.
@kenshorley3 жыл бұрын
Hi Piya. My advice is not to worry about speed at first. Try to stay as relaxed as possible when doing split hand patterns. And start slowly. Good luck!
