In this video, I discuss the difference between a hoop drum and a tar (commonly known as a frame drum). Many people learning finger techniques on the tar become frustrated when their hoop drum does not produce the same sound. I point out the design differences in the two types of drums, and reveal a hybrid solution that some drummers find satisfying.
The hoop drum in this video is one of my most sacred possessions. I made it from a kit I purchased from drum maker Steve Kauder. It is made from buffalo hide. You can find similar drum-making kits at www.beardrum.com
