[FRAMED] Episode 13 Seattle Challenge: Street Photography

Street photography. How hard can it be? All you do is stroll up to a random stranger on the street and snap a photo right? Nuh- uh. Street photography takes people skills, confidence, quick thinking skills and the ability to capture a photo before that subject passes you by. Today, we're taking three different talents who have never taken street-style photos to allow them to experience art in a whole new fashion.
Three photographers, with three different styles, jumping out of their comfort zones. Even though they don't know what they're getting themselves into today, these three groups of photographers are up to the challenge.

To me it was interesting to see how a non-street photographer put their own style into it. I dont know if i agree on the Photographer who got a model and shot her only. That made it a "photo shoot on the street" and not street photography. She really didn't face the challenges a street photographer would. Loved the other two photographers.

It would help if the host or the people that run this show knew what street photography was in the first place. Sure it involves strangers on the street but not in the way this was done.

I like your challenge because of the interaction with the people before the shot. but that is not what street photography is about. it's about capturing the moment, not about doing posed portraiture outside. take the picture and deal with the permissions later if there are any issues. not sure about the legalities about taking someone's picture in seattle, but we get snapped 300 times a day without our permission by traffic and security cameras when we're in a city.

I have been shooting the street since 1965 when I served in Vietnam. Most of what you saw here isn't real street photography. We come we see and we take. Henri Cartier Bresson put it this way, "We steal but in order to give." I also do street portraiture. I have a gallery called Charlotte Smiles, where I ask if I can take a picture of people smiling. You can often get a photo by asking if you can take a picture of what a person is doing..

you are correct, there are street portraits, those can be posed.. but true street photos are taken from a candid position. this whole video is a horrible example of street photography

This challenge would have been a lot more interesting if the contestants actually had to do street photography IE no costumes, makeup and posing. The whole point, as I understand it, is to gauge the photographer's talents by taking them way out of their comfort zone and making megan shoot during the afternoon doesn't qualify. All three photographers were so stuck in their element that they missed the opportunity to learn and create great candid photos. Total Fail.

You can ask a person to stand by a door, but posing a girl with clothes of your choosing? That is not street photography, the more raw natural it is the better. Models are never natural compared to people walking to work not knowing you are there. :)

First and formost you do not have to be personsable to be sucessful at street photographer, you have to be quck and aware and try to be invisable. If you want to engage with your subject it's optional. Working with people is portratiure, it can be street photograbhy, but if you don't have the stones to shove a camera in a strangers face without asking don't bother with this genre.
