We are building a house out of pallets on our off grid mountain! We are not doing this to be trendy or cool, but to save money and build our home on a budget. It will start as a one room, 2 floor house that will look like a Pallet Tower and we will continue to add on more rooms later on.
It's not perfect, but it's a very sturdy floor made out of pallets!

The extra wood you will be installing needs to run under your well made joist hangers. Right now the floor joists are hanging on the fasteners and not supported underneath. The thin stamped metal ones have a floor to them firming a saddle that keeps the installed floor joists from just hanging on the nails or screws into the side of the floor joists. Just a thought Wolfmama

Thanks for the encouragement to know that well-built construction is possible with non-traditional methods. Sometimes people make you feel like it shouldn’t be done if it’s not done a certain way. God gave me an off-grid dream also, except mine is with containers. As a single middle-aged woman, I’m up for the adventure but I need a little encouragement and to see how other dreamers are doing it, at times. Blessings to you and your family. Stay strong!

It's a process for sure. Looking good and great job on only being less than 1/2 out. Around here (East Coast Canada), I get tons of pallets from the hardware stores when they bring in their garden center supplies. You may want to check with them.

With each step of the construction, I am getting excited about the layout! I well remember the tour of your last 'cabin' and the layout/design was phenomenal!!
@SteepintheWoods

I appreciate it! Our plan with this house is to only live in it 5 years while we build another one farther up the mountain, so it's layout may not be as exciting as our last cabin to save on effort. But I still want it to be interesting! (One of the reasons I chose pallets) After we get our next one built this pallet House will be for interns or turned into an Airbnb.

You got me wondering if a pallette cabin or small log cabin is easierto build. I'll wait to see how yours turns out. 👍 On our land we only have small trees maybe 6 to 8 inch diameter.

The easiest thing to build (which is what I attempted first) is an earth sheltered home, but the 40 or so logs that I cut and debarked instantly got moldy and I didn't feel like dealing with that this first year LOL so I transitioned to the pallet house. Filming the construction for KZbin is also a factor, pallets are a very popular resource.

10:35 such an understatement, building with pallet wood is not easy, I built a kids playhouse with it. Total respect for following through and improvising the various issues along the way 👍

Is this going to be the whole house or just part of it? Is there a video explaining your overall planñ
@SteepintheWoods
@SteepintheWoods 5 ай бұрын
This is 1/4 of the overall house by area. (Three rooms to be constructed) - The final size of this house will be a 20x20 square. We don't have a dedicated video on the overall design, but I try to touch on it a little bit and each of our construction videos.

@@SteepintheWoods it’s an inspiration for sure. I’ve been considering different methods to build a woodworking shop on my property and I believe I’m narrowing it down to something like this. I can build a 120 square foot floor area (10 x 12 feet) and still be off the radar where code enforcement is concerned. I may have to build more than 1 structure to accomplish my overall goal but I can work with that. I would love to find me some land out in the middle of nowhere where I didn’t have to worry about building codes though.

You can also check with the companies that get stone slabs for countertops and such. They have big pallets with long boards to hold the slabs during transport. Several companies where I live offer them for free to anyone who comes and gets them, otherwise they have to pay to have them picked up. Also some companies that get equipment in large tranport crates will let you pick them up. Just some thoughts. Will your second story be accessible by a staircase or by a ladder? Is that where the sleeping areas will be? I really liked your previous home and the way you handled the kitchen area. Looking forward to seeing the progress.
@SteepintheWoods
@SteepintheWoods 5 ай бұрын
Until we build the second room it'll be accessed by a ladder. (Not a perfect solution but a quick and compact one) And yes it'll be the sleeping area until we build the house a little bigger, at which point it'll transition to an office/library. Building a larger house than we had on our last mountain is important this time around, but it's only going to be a 5-year house while we build our next one higher up the mountain. So we're going to keep all the construction and design fairly basic because after those five years this will be a place for interns / Airbnb.

I may have missed it on your previous build, but how do you insulate your structure? Very innovative build!
@SteepintheWoods
@SteepintheWoods 5 ай бұрын
Other then straw-slip, there's only one option we can afford right now.. And that is the cheapest foam board they sell, here is a video of us installing the exact same insulation at our last cabin.. however this time we want to retain the ability to see the pallet construction in this house so the foam board will be going on the outside of our walls (under the siding) instead of inside between the joists. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYrMdJ2QqtqomK8

I learned so much from you bro. I was looking to build myself a jam room but I can't afford it at the cost of lumber today. I can get all the free pallets I need but do you think I could build a 12 x 20 room single story for under $5,000?
@SteepintheWoods
@SteepintheWoods 2 ай бұрын
Welcome to the journey! If you stick with reclaimed material (roofing, Windows etc) then you should come out well below $5,000. If it was me, I'd take what I had left and get plywood to go over the roof and floor just because of the amount of time it takes to do that with pallet boards. But you shouldn't need it for the walls as long as you're using whole pallets. The insulation we use is $9 a sheet and it's done well for us both here and our last place. However our first cabin was insulated with straw for even cheaper.
