Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. Isn't that just a cheap alternative to dimensional lumber?
A. No. Premium Engineered wood is a more dimensionally stable, straighter, longer wood product than dimensional lumber. It is usually more expensive than its solid lumber counterpart.
Q. Won't it decompose when exposed to water?
A. No. These products should not be confused with cheap commodity OSB. Even though two boards may look similar, there are big differences in the engineering and adhesives behind the premium products. We have tested these products in rain and weather over the course of several months. They are still structurally sound and show no signs of decomposition, unlike the dimensional lumber we are also testing which show checking and warping.
Q. Does the Engineered Lumber Off-Gas?
A. No. California CARB documentation lists these products as non-emitters.
Q. How did you attach the pile system to the LVL's?
A. We welded a cap plate on top of the piles, and screwed the cap plate to the LVL grid.
Q. How are you insulating the crawl space?
A. XPS foam board attached to the I joists.
Q. Where can I get stuff?
A. See Below

Also to give credit where credit is due I’ve installed nothing but hardie for lap siding for the past 12 years but have moved to only using LP trim and soffit and probably 50-70% LP over hardie siding the past 2-3 years. The installers prices are about 10-15% less with LP not to mention no respirators from the silica dust is a big plus. Their siding products are awesome now we’ll just have to see if they last as long and hold paint like fiber cement

lp Smart side has been my go to since it came out. And it's gotten much better. We route our ends to lap like the new expert finish stuff. I really like that they're offering that now. It's not in my area that ive seen but will save some time and money. 👍also we use green and rust red sheethings and advantech subfloor because it's what everyone stocks. I'd really like to use the 1 1/8" lp. I bet the deflection in that floor is ridiculously minimal. LP please push the new products in mid MO. Thanks! Thanks Jordan. Love the lp farmhouse build.

Kyle doing the nail test, then shows Greg doing his best springboard impression. Talking of Kyle, having to wear a hardhat, poor fella. Like the shiplap, you don't have the problem of caulk/sealant drying out, mechanical or wear from sunlight, thus less maintenance. In my opinion it looks better, not like an after thought of prevention action, but like it is how it is supposed to be, with a intentional reveal line.

Check out bear skin flashing for joints. It’s basically a pad of post it note type material for joint flashing super simple not sharp it’s a little pricey ($65) for a 50 sheet book but is super convenient. Also “H” style clips for LP are pretty cool they flash the back and cover the front of siding with wood grain texture. House looks amazing! But don’t fool these people they’re building products are trash! Huber is definitely going to protect their patents. I'm not educated on the state of the suit, but just like GP force field, a winning suit from Huber doesn't mean that the product will go off the market. It just might result in licensing fees. Again this is just my speculation, the suit is over a year old and they're still moving on with manufacturing and marketing, so I'm confident it won't be falling off the market anytime soon. Time will tell. Thanks for the comment!

Great! Go check my Instagram feed where I show these things getting soaked. There's absolutely no structural degradation at all. I've had a test sample sitting out in a pasture for 4 months now beside a standard 2 x 4 dimensional lumber. The LSL looks brand new, and the two-by-four is warped, cracked and graying. I'm as surprised as anybody. I grew up using cheap OSB for applications where it never was intended to be used, and called it vertical mulch. This stuff isn't even in the same universe.

when are they going to marry the tech shield and weather logic and make a mutant radiant-wrb product? I remember in the late 80's early 90's the Re-Max radiant foam board was used in a lot of track homes. seems like it was headed in the right direction with radiant barrier on the walls just not structurally.
@JordanSmithBuilds
@JordanSmithBuilds 4 жыл бұрын
I think they are working on an insulated panel now. The roofing version may have insulation and radiant barrier comes. You would see less/no benefit in the walls, because there's less radiant energy beating down on them. Also you want as much insulation in your cavity as possible, and as soon as you have anything physically touching your radiant barrier, you've defeated the purpose, as your heat is now conducting rather than radiating.

I'm curious where you're getting your data from? I'm not being defensive or trying to be a jerk I would just really like to see some testing that shows the decay rate in high moisture environment of engineered lumber vs. Dimensional lumber. my non-scientific LSL out in the field next to dimensional lumber is showing otherwise. The dimensional lumber is cracking and warping, and the LSL looks nearly brand-new four months in.
@JordanSmithBuilds
@JordanSmithBuilds 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, nobody in our generation has bought a "real" piece of lumber from a lumber yard. The old growth forests have been claimed and all of our wood is coming from plantation grown forests at this point. New growth just doesn't have the density or strength that an old growth tree has. These LS cells perform much better than any new growth lumber you will buy off the shelf.
@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb
@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb 4 жыл бұрын
@@JordanSmithBuilds Not a jerk question at all. It's just my experience with engineered lumber vs conventional lumber shows much higher decay/loss of structural integrity when subjected to similar wet conditions. Engineered lumber expands and falls apart as the glue bonds delaminate, leaving a pile of chips that have lost almost all structural strength. Doug Fir is common around here and it takes years of wetting to see similar damage. I imagine it's worse in hot/humid climates. Engineered lumber seems slower to absorb water but takes much longer to dry - and it's the longer time to dry that seems to cause the accelerated damage
