No surprise you're confused about screws. 1) For clarity, drilling creates a hole in your material, tapping creates threads in the material that match the threads on the screw. 2) Far too many people including those who should be knowledgeable, use the terms self drilling and self tapping interchangeably because All self drilling screws ARE self tapping, not all self tapping screws are self drilling, i.e.; sheet metal screws don't have a "drill bit" point, just a point with threading 3) ALL self drilling screws do not need pilot holes as they literally have a drill bit as it's point and create its own hole, hence self drilling and once the hole is drilled the threads catch the material and self tap and you tighten it down. This is 100% what you want for your build. 4) To add to your confusion you have "lathe" screws, the lathe aspect refers to the head of the screw being wide and low profile but they can be self drilling/tapping, what your likely using OR self tapping only, no drill bit point and likely used in wood or sheet metal. 5) Where you maybe having issue with the 2x6 is that the self drilling point will drill through the wood no problem, but as you hit the metal frame the screw is already surrounded by the "2" of wood that has "tapped" itself into the wood creating friction. Drilling into the frame is going to require you to really lean into the drill to get the screw "bit" to start drilling particularly since it's a much more dense material. probably not an issue with the thinner plywood pieces. you might want to consider pre drilling though the wood AND frame when fastening the thick wood to make it easier. :)

This is the EXACT information I needed!! Thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this. To your point about lath screws, I’m starting to regret that choice because it doesn’t fit flush with the wood. I’m afraid it’s going to make paneling my walls and putting my ceiling up a weeee bit difficult 😑. You’re the best tho, thanks again!

Okay so I'm late to the party with this channel, but I love your energy and enthusiasm. I've watched a bunch of these van build videos and while I've only seen a few of yours, you are already one of my favorites. You're very genuine and don't seem like you are in it to become a stereotypical influencer-which I can't stand. But it looks like things have, at least temporarily, come to an end. I just found you damn it! Here's the deal with the screws. To mount wood to metal, you need self drilling screws preferably the ones with the little "wings" on the ends. The wings will snap off once they reach the metal. The metal has to be heavy gauge or it won't work right. Okay this is the crucial part: You need to use an impact driver with enough torque to drive the screw into the metal. The drill driver you are using won't cut it. It's also better to use a 18V+ impact driver opposed to the 12V versions because they lack torque too. You can use self tapping screws, but you need to pre-drill. Now sheetmetal screws are better used attaching metal, like sheetmetal, to wood. They can be used in place of self drilling and self tapping screws in a pinch but again you need to drill pilot holes. I already mentioned in another comment that you should be using a track saw to cut your big sheets. It's way easier to manage the material opposed to a table saw. Table saws are better at cutting thicker wood and planks. What you really needed to cut the shorter pieces of framing was a chop saw and not a jig saw. Jigsaws are best for cutting curves or in the middle of material and not straight cuts. A jig saw should be the last resort for cutting (well actually a sawzall but that's another story). The circular saw would have been a better choice but you have to be careful in measuring. I'm not writing all this to show off or be a know-it-all. I'm far from it. Hopefully I can impart the lesson to others of finding and using the right tool for the job to begin with. Trust me I have made a lot of mistakes when it comes to using the wrong tool that the job required (like using a wood drill bit to drill into masonry). Ask people and research on Google. There is no way that you will know all this stuff without doing it or learning from someone else. Plus you will need practice to do it right every time. It will save you a lot of time, wasted materials and frustration.

For Wood Only you can use "Turbo drive-self drilling screws" which do not need pilot holes as they drill out the pilot hoke as they go without putting pressure on the wood. Any other screws will need pilot holes.

If you want to cut straight on large sheets of material, you have to use a track saw. It's easier to work with compared to a table saw for cutting sheets. It's also better than fashioning a jig using clamps for a number of reasons. The only problem is they are kinda pricy, but worth the investment if you are doing a big project like this.

That just shows more cuteness about you that u research stuff u don't know about like r- value . And I'm about late cause my phone service sucks or the internet. just sucks . And this probably won't make you feel any better cause u already figured out what I was gonna share with u . I was gonna tell ya you didn't have to go back to the home Depot that day. Was gonna say just drill your pilot hole thru your plywood then u will know it's where it goes .

Basic tips: measure twice befor cutting once. Think about total weight, 2X6 weighs a lot more than 2X2 but both are good for van framing

My understanding is sheet metal screws are self-tapping. I believe the reason it's best to use them is sheet metal is typically thin and drilling pilot holes make a clean hole. You want something that twists its way in, resulting in a tight fit, or 'grabbing" the surrounding metal, with not even a tiny bit of micto space not filled by screw.

And another littletip , not everything needs to be measured to see the measurement, then measured again on your material . A lot of things can just be marked or scribed . It may be hard to find self tapping screws in that length . It's always is best to pre-drill everything if u can't find self tappers. I always recommend predrilling everything but I am old-school . Wish I was there to help ya , more so just to hang out with ya though .

Sarah heres the calculation FYI..😎😎😁 It is simply the thickness of the insulation in inches divided by the thermal conductivity of the insulation. For example, a 2" thick sheet of insulation with a thermal conductivity1 of 0.25 Btu•in/h•ft2•°F has an R-Value equal to 2 divided by 0.25 or 8.0.

Cut On The Outside Of Ur Pencil Line, Not The Inside & Remember 2 Add The Thickness Of Ur Saw Blade 2 Ur Measurements... Congrats: I've Never Known Any1 2 Do That With Their Apron, Without Being Instructed 1st... Well Done Rookie 😃🙃 If U Get a 1/8"-1/4" Thick Wall Board, It Bends Easily & Is A Joy 2 Work With On The Roof & Sides [The Have A Lot Of Colours & Designs]...

Making progress! Schmutz on your face is completely appropriate for Home Depot visits :) A few suggestions. It is generally not a good idea to support both side of wood when making a cut. It's best to have one side be able to fall away or move freely. Also, when ever possible stand to the side of the saw, not directly behind it. Not really a big deal for a jig saw but definitely for circular saws. Safety first.

Pretty much the only screws that you won’t need a pilot hole for are Self tapping screws. You should be able to tell by the tip of the screw looking like a drill bit. All other screws will need a pilot hole. You can get away without doing it in some sheet metal like duct work or metal roofing but keep in mind that that material is a lot thinner then the metal in your van. Good luck. I’m doing a van build myself right now 😁
