For that mountain photo I'd advise if people are unable to get a wide enough shot with their lens, then take multiple shots and stitch them together. You can then crop in much closer, it doesn't have to always be a panorama. Just make sure to not move from your posture and position while doing that.

Great beginner composition video. The Golden Mean is very close to the, Rule of Thirds. One can do this in camera without much pain or a calculator if you can overlay 1/3 lines in the camera’s screen and move the subject just slightly inside the 1/3 line. Did I say, “very slightly?” The Fibonacci spiral is also cool but hard to imagine and even harder to get subjects to fall on the lines unless you’re setting up a still life. All you really need is three objects on the Golden Spiral for it to work. I’ve tried but it’s tricky and things on the street don’t usually cooperate. I wish Fuji had the option to overlay it on the EVF because the effect can be striking if you can capture it, but again, it’s too complex to imagine and get right (for me) and unless you get it in-camera it’s not likely you can crop to line things up for any post cropping. Chances you’ll get struck by lightening are probably better than getting elements lining up on your photo. If you do capture getting struck by lightening in a selfie that could be even a more sensational image but probably your last, so leave instructions in your will on how you want it cropped.

Loved this episode! Crop is a very powerful tool. Try your best to nail it on location, but invest time experimenting with the crop tool at home. Sometimes you can even find several different pictures inside 1 single photo.

Idk why but I love dead spaces like the sky in the last pic, even if they're not "correct". I think it's a sort of minimalistic attraction maybe. The 1:1 doesn't work at all in that kind of picture. Anyway, I love this video, thank you Omar

As you are discussing in camera crop versus in post, look at the photograph at 14:53. It has "distortion" in that things that are parallel in real life seem to converge. This is normal in geometrically precise drawings as well as good lenses, but humans are distracted by it. In this case, holding the camera level would already have prevented most of this "distortion". But that would have given a different framing of the subject in camera. Sometimes it helps to raise or lower the camera, take a step back, mound a lens with wider angle. But keep level. And crop undesired bits in post. Alternatively, in Lightroom you can make corrections, but this causes loss of part of the image as the outline of the photo changes from rectangle to e.g. trapezoid.

Another fun video, Omar. And, yeah. Sometimes the bull's-eye composition really is the bull's-eye. Never using it isn't quite as bad as always using it... 😎 I've seen a couple bodies of work in which the subject was always centred that were absolutely stunning because of the centre composition, rather than despite it.

18:16 Don't crop away that girl, that guy looking at her is awesome. If you want to crop you can take of that little out of focus part at the right, so to have the guy a little more to the right of the photo. But I think you shouldn't crop at all, there is so much to explore going from the guy in the center to the girl in the corner (following his eye direction) and then the rest of the photo.

Really appreciate your videos. Recently switched to Sony for the auto focus and full frame. Mostly like the colors but would love to see how you color grade for skin tones. You are right how we are all different in our needs/wants as I was a lover of Nikon color science...go figure.

It is such an important question. As a pro 35yrs in the game - I cannot think of 1 single time where an image I took wasn't cropped wither in the darkroom or digitally - not one and I have worked out that my count must be in the hundreds of thousands - all the paid images anyway - buuuuut it is still important to frame correctly so of course the answer is 'both'. When I was shooting for Conde Naste - we would work with a design team - and I recall once I had to reshoot an entire spread as the layout artist forgot to tell me they needed text - advertising also - remember who your client is - they might need to add stuff in post - as well as take away!!!!! - All good - lovely stuff as ever Omar

I think it's easy to overuse the Rule of Thirds. Jamie Windsor has a great video on composition where he talks about other options. It should really come down to whether the photo feels balanced or not. You can stick the subject on the intersecting third lines and end up with too much empty space. Interested to see more videos on this subject!

​@@ogonzilla It is liked finding the right theorem(s) (or we photographers call bag of tricks) to solve a geometry problem. For instance, for the coffee shop photo. I will include the person's back on the left and cropped out the distractions on the right hand side. This technique of having a person predominant at the front (left/right) had been used by photographers such as Robert Frank, Fausto Podavini, David Alan Harvey, Patrick La Roque, etc. I think in the case, it adds depth (I call it layers), contrast and may even be a story. Was it just another customer or an Ex was spying on him? Nevertheless, having a different POV is what's best about photography. 🙂

Love your videos! I'm a Fuji shooter and have moved to Capture One. I really miss all the compositional overlays available in LR. There are only 3 overlays in C1 and you can't spin them around. If there are ways to add more overlays or spin the fibinachi spiral around, could you do a tutorial on that. Thanks for all the fun tutorials!

I actually prefer the offset of the figure being more to the right of the urban scene and white square, as there's a lengthened space in front of the figure, for it to walk into. Plus, the right hand wall of the Taiwanese outlet is centered between the figure and far left side of photo. I think sometimes an offset works better in terms creating a space in which the viewers eye or a photographed figure is potentially moving into.
