Roberto Bertero at the Great Organ Bonato/Klais of Villasanta’s Sant'Anastasia church (Italy).
In this video I am playing François Couperin’s Benedictus.
François Couperin was a French Baroque composer, organist and harpsichordist. He was known as Couperin le Grand ("Couperin the Great") to distinguish him from other members of the musically talented Couperin family.
During this video I will show photos depicting the church of Saint-Gervais in Paris, where François in 1688 became organist (a position occupied by members of the Couperin family for 173 years!).
Only one collection of organ music by François Couperin survives, the Pièces d'orgue consistantes en deux Messes ("Pieces for Organ Consisting of Two Masses"), which were published in November 1690.
At the age of 21, François probably had neither the funds nor the reputation to obtain widespread publication and the Masses were released as manuscripts, with a printed title page and approbation by his teacher, Michel Richard Delalande, who wrote that the music was "very beautiful and worthy of being given to the public." The two masses were intended for different audiences: the first for parishes or secular churches ("paroisses pour les fêtes solemnelles”), from which this meditative Benedictus is taken, the second for convents or abbey churches ("couvents de religieux et religieuses").
The peculiarity of this video is that I did not record it at the Santuario della Consolata Organ, but at the Bonato-Klais Organ, built in 2013 in the parish of Sant'Anastasia in Villasanta (MB), Italy. Perhaps the instrument most loved by Jean Guillou in the last years of his existence.
Special thanks to:
Parish of S. Anastasia, Villasanta (MB). Daniele Tobio, Giampiero del Nero and Mario Pessina.
Paolo Sanvito, Stefano Ghezzi and Giuseppe Distaso,
for maintenance and assistance to the organ.
