The recorder predates current art music practice and follows its own. Embellishing the composition with ornaments was just what was done. Heck what do you think the second half of this piece is anyway? It was van Eyck showing off on the spot, he was blind and the tunes he played in the public square were written down by someone else.

The melody here is called Daphne in a number of English sources eg Playford's ''Dancing Master'' of 1651. So interesting that there was a common resevoir of popular. tunes from the British Isles and the Low Countries. Beautifully played here.

Van Eyck's Der Fluyten Lust-hof is a collection of popular music from many genres of the time (and I believe some of his own compositions, but don't quote me :P)

A variation of the melody appears in the Dahlhoff collection from Westphalia in Germany (1767-1799, Volume I, Number 131) as „Daphnus“. I love how these tunes travelled.

Rather disappointing actually that Lazarevitch should choose this old war horse to put through the paces again, and if truth be told a rather disappointing performance, wherein the statement of the theme is unremarkable and the "presto" divisions are a legato blur of burbles. Others have done better by it, including Bruggen in his classic recordings.

There are many different types of Renaissance recorders, can you tell me which recorder you are using. I know it is not a soprano ("descant", lowest note C5). So is it an alto "treble", lowest note F4), tenor (lowest note C4) or a bass (lowest note F3).
