sitcoms usually change a few ideas and storylines between the pilot episode and the rest of the show. when Niles says "Miss Babcock loves to be taken in the library", I've always wondered if it meant that the original idea was for her and Max to be romantically involved. And during the party, Max seems to hit on her.

​@thebigdawg61 if that were simply the case they would've excluded the head of the table out of shot and wouldn't of made such a point of focusing the empty chair in centre while she dragged the other one over. Fran also asks where she's supposed to sit while that chair is blatantly there. Indicating she acknowledges who's place that is.
