France is in the midst of an identity crisis - grappling with some important questions about what kind of country it is, and what kind of country it wants to be.
In this episode of The Big Picture: France in Focus, we will deal with a legacy of France’s history that still plays a crucial role in its present colonialism.
Presenter Myriam Francois is taken on a "colonial tour" of Paris museums by Congolese activist, as well as speaking to a "decolonial coach" about transgenerational trauma. Joining her in the studio discussion are Grace Ly, Sally Alassane Thiam and Dorothee Myriam Kellou.

Me I had to travel to France and Belgium to discover books and pictures about my Indigenous Culture here in Colombia because all of the Precolumbian art is kidnapped in private collections of Europe. Those pieces of art and scultures explain alot about us and our past, but they are lost somewhere in the basements of France. Worst part is people here in Colombia, not even in academia, anthropologist or even museums have access or knowledge about them. Is kind of evil.

Yes it is evil. Most don't know, but it's also the white race trying to steal the spiritual power from different POC cultures by disconnecting them with their sacred artifacts, art and ancestors. It's definitely identity theft if that's too much for you to believe This is coming from a guy who had to fight identity theft for a year while I had cancer. The thief kept pulling hard credit inquiries on my three credit reports and my Chex Systems report as well. Over 30 fraudulent credit cards and bank accounts were attempted that destroyed both my credit and banking scores.

The unimaginable atrocities by European governments, institutions and individuals which are still visibly practised today is as insidious and dehumanising just as in the days of old. All our educational institutions, kingdoms, independent states destroyed and a whole population were subjected to worst forms of cruelty. Sometimes I wondered when western media tries to present western governments and institutions as torch bearers of human rights and respect for human dignity. There's no such time in the history of the western Europe where such nice attributes can be ascribed to them. They are beast and barbarians. African countries and in some ways Asian countries are still exploited today through dubious trade agreements, coups and assassinations and western engineered infighting among African peoples.

The same west who accords so much pride and significance to their historical heritage, culture and ideology, spend so much to preserve and propagate such are the same people, who argues against their former colonies’ claim to restore their stolen heritage. The west’s cognitive dissonance, is that colonialism and imperialism happened in the distant past and there is no rational in the people affected to demand restoration. France, like other colonialist continue to slaughter, abuse people from these so-called former colonies and the looting continues. In fact colonialism only ended in words and not deeds. “Former” French colonies’ tax revenue (60-70%) must deposited in the French Reserve Bank. The French invests such money but the interests does not accrue to such colonies. If a colony requires its own money it must borrow at the prevailing interests rates, putting these colonies in further debt. The French companies have the first right to capital projects in these countries. The French are in control of the military of these countries hence the many coups, destabilisation and assassinations of leaders who do not toe the French-line. But the French are not alone, America, Britain and other western countries continue with similar evil actions under various disguises but with the same intent to exploit and prevent the development of such countries.

Right on. The recent exposure of what French governments have done to Haiti, and still get away with more theft under the protection of international finance control, is I hope the worst of what carries on from what they've done. Very poignant. There are many ways for people from places that were pillaged and colonized by Europe to process their history. One is to discover the role that their ancestors played in the making of the modern world. For instance American journalist Howard French's book Born in Blackness puts forth a powerful argument that modernity was built on the backs of plantation agriculture driven by African slave labour in the Western hemisphere which made possible the Industrial Revolution, and not Christianity or the Enlightenment as is commonly thought today.

The French have a responsibility to acknowledge and apologize for the atrocities they committed in Algeria and Vietnam. Their role in these countries' histories cannot be ignored or overlooked. The French have a long history of colonization and exploitation, and it is time for them to take accountability for their actions. It is not enough for them to simply brush these events under the rug and try to portray themselves as a morally upright nation. They must confront their past and make amends for the harm they have caused. Furthermore, the French must also stop their obsession with appearing good and perfect. This has led them to downplay or even deny the severity of their actions in these countries. It is time for them to let go of this facade and face the reality of their actions. By doing so, they can learn from their mistakes and prevent similar atrocities from occurring in the future. It is only through reflection and acknowledgment that true growth and progress can be achieved. In addition, the French must also stop supporting capitalist French companies that continue to exploit and oppress the people of Algeria and Vietnam. By turning a blind eye to the injustices committed by these companies, the French are perpetuating a cycle of exploitation and perpetuating the harm caused by their past actions. It is time for them to take a stand and hold these companies accountable for their actions. Lastly, it is crucial for the French to stop being arrogant and condescending towards the people of Algeria and Vietnam. They cannot continue to act as if they are superior and entitled to these countries' resources and people. The French must show respect and humility towards these nations and work towards building a relationship based on mutual understanding and cooperation. In conclusion, the French need to take a hard look at their past and make amends for the harm they have caused in Algeria and Vietnam. They must stop hiding behind a facade of perfection and instead, acknowledge their mistakes and work towards building a better future for all. It is time for them to take responsibility for their actions and show genuine remorse and empathy towards the people they have wronged. Only then can true healing and reconciliation begin.

France would have to go far beyond returning artifacts from museums. It must educate its citizens about colonialism in the same way it emphasizes philosophy and the revolution. Then change the constitution so that the census identifies citizens by race and culture instead of a vague generalization which denies rights to those of non European descent. This would change the politics and offer a clear and more fair distribution of social amenities: education, housing, services, healthcare, public transportation etc.

Today I saw the documentary "Blood and Tears: French Decolonisation" on Al Jazeera. It was really good but I was irked by one part of it: A black woman was talking about how black people from the overseas departments who moved to France were somehow victims of a terrible injustice (she actually called it "violence!) namely that they had to do "menial" (a word I intensely dislike) jobs in France. I found her sense of victimhood quite disingenuous. First of all, what is wrong with working as a domestic worker, for instance? Secondly, it may come as a surprise to many black people (and perhaps many white people, too) that white immigrants (e.g. the Irish) in the New World often did the exact same "menial" jobs but they got on with it and saw their employment as a way to make money and enjoy a standard of living that they didn't have in their home countries. Ditto for southern European guest workers (e.g. Turks, Italians, Greeks, etc.) in countries such as Germany. This erasure of white history and the incessant claiming of victim status by so many black race baiters shows a complete lack of historical awareness .

Xenophobia and racism are so prevalent especially since the last few years, the far right holds the mainstream media and is spreading their hatred propaganda by devising the French people and depicting immigrants as savage rapists and robbers who benefit from the French people’s work. It is a similar discourse to that used during colonisation, diabolizing those who are considered to be different and inferior and marginalized them. For example, muslim women started to become a problem ever since racist far right and right wing politicians realized they weren’t housemaids, babysitters, cleaners or housewives anymore but educated university students with higher positions in society. As a result, many employers discriminate against veiled muslim women forcing them to remove it in order to be hired or to leave. Also, the racist political discourse uses secularism to alienate and marginalize muslim people when it is absolutely not its proper role. They twisted the definition of secularism so it fits their racist and anti-islam discourse. And as a muslim and a French born woman with Algerian background roots, I noticed how ignorant people were about Algerian colonization thus they often deny our experience of racism and tell we victimize.

OK, that was certainly more of an issue in previous generations, but the wealth inherited by Brutish society, and the poverty inherited by its victims, is still present. So the debt is still owed. How are you going to pretend that Islamic colonialism has been worse than Brutish, (or French, or Russian), colonialism, while the consequences of it, can be seen more clearly, in who dominates the industrialised world ?

Learn from history, our country was colonialized more than 300 years from one country and 3 years from another country. Wars bring a lot of grief, scar and negativity. It is time to focus back to work together to collaborate to be strong and forgive. War in Ukraine, Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, South Asia etc. also affect other countries too. All wars have to stop. Leaders in G20 needs to meet and greet together as mature and wise leaders. Albert Einstein - 'Weak people revenge. Strong people forgive. Intelligent people ignore.'

US: BOOOOOM !! BOOOOOM !! BOOOOOM !! China: Build !! Build !! Build !! America bombs, China builds! China builds 1,000 schools in Iraq 06-18 "China's construction of thousands of schools in Iraq" by the Iraqi Shafaq News Agency has attracted the attention of foreign netizens. According to a report published on the 18th, the foundation stone laying ceremony was held on the same day for the education project of China-aided construction of 1,000 schools in Iraq. Many foreign netizens expressed the emotion of "American bombing, China building", and some people said that "in the great power competition, China is competing at a level that the United States will never understand". On "World Refugee Day", some netizens also specially sent a meme picture of "China and the United States are very different in Iraq" to the US Secretary of State Blinken, who boasted that the United States has greatly helped refugees, and ridiculed him: "China's government in Iraq 1,000 schools, the United States directly killed 16,000 civilians in Iraq. This is how China and the United States 'practice human rights' in Iraq." According to statistics released by NGOs in April 2022, since the outbreak of the Iraq War, the number of Iraqi civilians killed by the war may exceed 209,000. If military, police and other public officials are added, the total death toll far exceeds this figure.

But I must observe that in contemporary, decolonized societies in West Africa, Cambodia (and other former colonies of what the French called IndoChina), as well as North Africa, life is still not "great for homosexuals" or, in the case of some of the Arab world, for women. Just as we should not romanticize and glorify French colonialism, then, or as a paternalistic, racist attitude now (and as it still exists economically), let us be truthful about today's generation's prejudices, religious dogma, strictures both in France among the descendants of colonization and in the countries France invaded and occupied.

I think that looking at history from the lens od why me when looking at people who went through these things as if it was yourself It's a very discriminative viewpoint You're discriminating against the past based on the values of today And you just can't hold them to that standard. Everybody always calls Europe the coloniast the coloniast whenever it comes to all these other countries but they seem to forget that every people at some point has done some form of colonizing. Maybe it was on another continent maybe it was in another country sometimes it was just villages that they were taking over. People are gonna do it on the scale based on the size of power they have. So just because one group only did it to a neighboring village or 2 doesn't mean they wouldn't have tried to take over the world if they actually had the power to do it because I would have. Am I justifying any of the measures that made and took no I'm not but then again it's human nature violence is human nature answer we have been at war Longer than we've ever been at peace. History repeats itself so always know your history and make your Make your communities built around not making those mistakes make those mistakes impossible to happen But look to the future more than you do the past.
