I last saw one of these at Cherbourg in 1991 on the apron loading up. I thought it was a 737. Great video

Thank you, she is an iconic aircraft, a real head turner, I too saw her in France back in the 90's.

A few decades later, another 737 killer was launched. Unlike the plane in the video, it actually became successful.

I can imagine a lot of lessons were learnt from the mistakes in designing a very niche airplane like the Mercure, but it's a beautiful machine nevertheless.

Perhaps the Mercure was a commercial failure. But, the airplane mad a significant contribution to the Airbus A-320.

Interestingly, many of the engineers who worked on the Mercure ended up going to work with Airbus when Airbus was studying starting around 1978 the Joint European Transport (JET) research project. That study resulted in what became the Airbus A320, a plane that (like the 737) became adaptable in small size (A318, A319) and larger size (A321) versions, and soon will push the range out to an amazing 4,700 nautical miles (more than enough for transatlantic flying).
