France's Macron calls snap parliamentary election after Le Pen's far-right wins EU vote | DW News

French President Emanuel Macron announced Sunday he was dissolving the National Assembly and calling a snap election after his centrist alliance was trounced by the far-right National Rally in the European Parliament elections.
According to the first exit polls, the National Rally won around 32%, more than double Macron's pro-EU coalition, which received 15% of the vote.
The first round of France's parliamentary election will be held on June 30 and a second round is scheduled for July 7.
Macron's government was already short of a majority in parliament, resorting to the use of special constitutional powers to bypass the legislature and force through multiple high profile laws.

One mistake in the video:: Le Pen President is not on the table in July.. At best she'd be prime minister. Macron's calculation is quite sound if you have followed French politics long enough. There has not been a popular french government in over a decade. By calling elections, he makes sure another party is given the impossible task of governing the next 3 years without a majority, instead of taking the hit himself. He'll have to give up on doing anything for 3 years, but that is going to happen anyway due to his non-majority government
