Well, argentina lost in the last 16, but against the strongest team who won the world cup later. And they lost with just one goal difference. Same for France 2014 who lost with one goal difference against the later wc winner. If France had won against Germany in 2014, they could've possibly won the world cup against Argentina in the final. And if Argentina had won against France in 2018, they could've possibly won the world cup although they lost against Croatia...
