The universe never intended the French to win it in 2006wc Recall France also beat Italy in the 1998wc... it was another complicated match. In 2006 they just had to loose it😂 But i shall always think wat would have been if Zidan just ignored the insult n finished the match.

from an Italian point of view, this was an absolute tragedy. I think it's also one of the most cruel defeats in football for any team, ever. I don't think there has ever been such a late equaliser in any Euro or World Cup final. What makes it so frustrating is how completely lame and preventable France's equaliser was. Italy should first of all have just kept the ball instead of passing it forward which led to the offside call, which in turn led to Barthez's long ball forward. Then, Cannavaro made a rare error by heading the ball straight to Wiltord, but even then from the position where he shot either Nesta or Toldo could and should have found a way to get something on it. Italy were simply asleep and thought the game was over at that moment. It's also very sad for Dino Zoff, such a good man and he did a superb job with this team, if he hadn't left after this tournament undoubtedly Italy would have done better than with Trapattoni who was abysmal. Overall Italy were undoubtedly the better side in this game. They were much more in control from the very beginning, and France didn't really have a serious chance before their goal. Looking at the whole tournament, France perhaps deserved it more but this was probably their worst game of the tournament. It's amazing how such little details can change football history, if France had lost this game then the team of 1998-2000 would not be considered as one of the great international sides of all time I think, it was the achievement of winning two tournaments in a row that made them legends. Fortunately for Italy, they got their revenge in the 2006 World Cup, and ironically in that tournament Italy were more consistent throughout while France probably deserved to win the final itself, but lost, which is the opposite of what happened at Euro 2000.

Yep, please read my comments above..Italy should have brought on Ciro Ferreria in the last 10 minutes of the match...They needed an extra defender and a fresh pair of legs..Not Montella..It took me a year to get over it and I'm still gutted..
@bigmic69284 жыл бұрын
It was frustrating for exactly one reason: 1:35:55: that pass from Totti wasn‘t offside. This led to Barthez freekick. Still wondering to this day why the f%# the ref blew the whistle there.
@danielharrison32504 жыл бұрын
Wiltord was never the most convincing of finishers but I don't think he gets enough credit for this goal, the angle of his shot makes it a lot more difficult for Toldo to save than it looks.

The Italian were better in this final. Somehow they got the upper hand from the beginning and France never felt like they were getting into the game. Reminds me of the Champions League final Atletico v Real, when Atletico were in front until the very end and the equalizer from Ramos. From this moment we knew Real was going to win. Same here, from the moment Wiltord scored, there was no doubt France was going to win this game.

@carlosimotti39333 жыл бұрын
Nah, they played for money as well. They were just far better than today's players, they were actually the last very great generation of players, as it was the last that grew up in the 80's-early 90's, before proper football youth coaching, based on technical fundamentals and completion of individual role building ended for being replaced by tactical and physical training.
@carlosimotti39333 жыл бұрын
@GTS not sure about NBA as I used to watch it a lot in the 80's - early 90's but then stopped as it was only available on pay tv and I was never into pay tv. Plus I didn't play it except for some spare time with friends, while I played a lot of football and some tennis. For these two, I witnessed their decline with my own eyes and I can say tennis declined as Nick Bollettieri's methods, based on stamina, strength and power from the baseline, all long play with full hit or top spin and virtually no net game, spread everywhere as the generations of the Edberg, Becker, Noah, Leconte, Cash, McEnroe, Lendl ecc ecc retired; thus producing strong athletes with no class or imagination. Much easier to build a machine than to nurture a talent. Not incidentally, the few with talent other than physique like Sampras and Federer, went on to dominate like crazy, which wouldn't have been as easy when the sport featured a lot of talented and diverse athletes.
@Kobs.A3 жыл бұрын
@GTS or to simply put you grew older. Once you get older everything past looks good. I know ppl also saying the last great sports generation was 60s where clubs all from Europe could win not necessarily Italian clubs. Funny eh, my big brother also said 2006 was the last great Era. I also said the 2010s. Funny how humans perceive things
@Kobs.A3 жыл бұрын
@GTS oh okay. Sports has been bad especially football, the decline of the serie A clubs caused the UCL to hv perennial Barca Madrid Bayern semi finals, very boring. Good to see Liverpool and Inter Milan rising but it's still bad due to the Pace and Power Era kinda sad. Miss the 90s but the 2010s was the best.

1:35:35 This is so ironic when you remember Italians used to be famous for the catenaccio and killing off games when leading. The MAIN reason France managed to get back to the game was the pass from Pessotto to del Piero who will be offside in a few seconds. A few seconds later Barthez gets to take the freekick, the ball goes flying near the Italian box, gets headed to Wiltord and the rest is history.

Several points, Zoff should have deployed an extra defender in the last 10 minutes to reinforce his rear guard...ideally the man for this job was Ciro Ferreira...Two, the loss of Vier pre tournament was a disaster but Inzaghi would have been a better option sitting on the shoulder of the French defence than an injured del Piero...Lastly, the ref's four mins of injury time was a joke, there was virtually no breather in that half let alone four mins worth....

Totti was head and shoulders above the rest of the players in this game and totally outclassed Zidane, giving him a playmaking and outfield ball-distribution lesson. Unfortunately, when you field players that shouldn't even deserve be in the roster but play for Juventusso you have to, aka Del Piero, you put yourself in condition of losing the match. That's what happened in this final, but also in the semifinal against Holland with Totti unexplicably left out of the starting 11, Del Piero in his place and Italy not playing football at all (yet Totti leaving the most memorable mark with his penalty); and in the 2006 final, Italy outplaying France in the first half with a one-legged Totti, despite him playing badly he kept occupied 2 men from the french midfield marking him and not going forward, in Vieira's own words; second half Totti out, Del Piero in, Italy stops playing football and keeping a single ball in offense, and gets saved by Buffon and...Zidane's headbutt
@EVOZORE3 жыл бұрын
Good analysis and the Story with Del Piero can be continued as he often "played" for Baggio but always badly disappointed. Del Piero scored 3 goals in 4 European Cups and 3 World Cups (7 Tournaments) and Baggio scored 9 goals in 3 World Cups (never convoked for European Tournament which is a scandal)!

totti was a great player but did little for italy. How many big goals did he score for Italy, and your comment about del piero is a cheap shot?In 2006 totti was crap for italy. if he wasn't fit he shouldn' t have started. Then after the WC when he got healthy he decided to quit playing for italy in the prime of his career b/c he simply didn't give a crap for his country. .totti 9 goals for italy in all games played, very few for a guy who scored 250 for as roma, del piero instead scored 27 in his career for italy. also your comment about del piero in the 2006 final is incorrect, he did not play in the second half but came on as a substitute in extra time.
@carlosimotti39332 жыл бұрын
@@DonQwantsyou Totti's job with Italy was not scoring goals but playmaking and serving assists, in fact a big deal of Vieri's, Inzaghi and Del Piero's goals in those years came from both his playmaking and direct assists. In 4 competitions he played in, Italy got 2 finals (one WC and this which was basically won) and in the other two competitions as soon as Totti was cut out (one time bribed referee, one time ridiculous disqualification with a rule made up for the occasion) Italy was eliminated. In official competitions, he has the same goals as Del Piero by the way, 3, just in way less matches. In 2006 he wasn't fit, yet Lippi couldn't do without him and he was anyway best assistman of the competition (5) on par with Riquelme. Italy scored 12 goals in that WC. 11 goals were scored with Totti in the field, 1 was scored against Cote d'Ivoire thanks to Kuffour's passing to Inzaghi instead of his own goalkeeper, so no Italy team play involved. I think numbers are against your say...
