Poulenc : Sonate pour flûte et piano (Magali Mosnier / Catherine Cournot)

Magali Mosnier (flûte) et Catherine Cournot (piano) jouent la sonate pour flûte et piano composée par Francis Poulenc. Extrait du concert donné le 4 octobre 2019 à l'auditorium de la Maison de la Radio.
Une lettre de Francis Poulenc à son ami chanteur Pierre Bernac témoigne dès 1952 de sa volonté d’écrire une sonate pour flûte traversière et piano, ce qu’il confirmera à plusieurs reprises les années suivantes dans sa correspondance à son éditeur. C’est Harold Spivacke, porte-parole de la Fondation Coolidge à la Bibliothèque du Congrès de Washington, qui lui en donnera l’occasion avec une commande au printemps 1956. Née dans une riche famille de Chicago, la pianiste Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge avait été l’une des principales mécènes de la musique aux États-Unis, et commanda des partitions de chambre à Pierné, Ravel, Schoenberg, Bliss, Respighi, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Bartók, Webern, Britten, Copland, Barber ou Honegger. Décédée en 1953, à l’âge de quatre-vingt-neuf ans, elle légua une partie de sa fortune à sa fondation, dont Poulenc fut l’un des bénéficiaires avec cette commande.

J'aime beaucoup le relief d'une petite veine jugulaire de Magali Mosnier... plus sérieusement: bravo aux deux musiciennes d'avoir fait ressortir le charme très mystérieux de cette oeuvre, un mélange de légèreté de mélancolie d'angoisse et de joie.

Amazing tone and technique! Love hove it sounds! Only thing .. it felt a little bit off.. Maybe because the first part was too fast and it sounded like there are thousands of motives but not the general story. But it's just my opinion.

Part of Poulenc's style is an almost cubistic approach to thematic development. Themes are often fragmented and reassembled without traditional motivic development. It's often the incongruity (the "butting up" of melodic idea without traditional transitions) that define his compositional style. It can be thought of as a "graceful schizophrenia". Partly because of that, there is rarely a linear general story in Poulenc like one expects from the Germanic tradition. His genius lies in somehow making these shards of melodic ideas resonate in a way that makes some kind of psychological sense. The effect (especially after repeated listening) is very powerful.
