He could have spent 14 minute just covering gawd awful trades. Just counting the time I've been a fan of hockey, Niedermayer, Luongo, Smith, Kenny Johnsson, Rask, Steen, Couture, Stralman, Seguin and Hamilton off the top of my head. Looking at those trades the only decent player in return was pretty much Kessel.

IMO the lowest of the low is probably the Kurvers trade for the 1991 first round pick. In 1989, the New Jersey Devils traded Kurvers, who they received in 1987 for a 3rd plus 10th round picks, to the Maple Leafs after a 66 point season. The price was a first round pick about 18 months after this trade. The first season Kurvers hit 52 points and the Leafs were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. The next season can only be explained as a disaster that was compounded with knee jerk reactions. During this season the Leafs stumbled out of the gate and were at the bottom of the standings with the Quebec Nordiques. The prize for last place (no lottery) was Eric Lindros who was dubbed as The Next One. To avoid the embarrassment of essentially trading the next generational talent, from your own backyard, the Leafs traded away a pair of second round picks to the Nordiques for three roster players. This effectively made the Leafs slightly better and the Nordiques slightly worse and went a long way to having the standings result that way. Oh and Kurvers was traded to Vancouver in January, well before the draft in which they surrendered the pick. This draft was also one of the deepest drafts in history. Beyond Lindros and Niedermayer, this draft had Forsberg, Matvichuk, Lapointe, Rolston, Kovalev, Naslund. Many who have had long and very good NHL careers. The Leafs have made bad trades in their history, but IMO this single move likely cost them a Stanley Cup during this time through the 2004-05 lockout. However this franchise has had a long pattern of making terrible moves, it's no surprise they have a 50+ year Cup drought.

Who can forget the early 80's when their so called "talent" consisted of the likes of Jiri Crha, Rocky Saganiuk and Normand Aubin. Hard to believe that Normand Aubin was drafted in the same round of the same draft year as Mark Messier and it turned out that he didn't know how to skate, shows you how crappy the scouting and player evaluation of the leafs was at the time.

As someone who was not alive for it, the 80s era of the NHL is fascinating to me. The fact that the leafs had seasons where they won less than 30 games and STILL made the playoffs. People complain about the regular season not meaning anything now but it REALLY didn't mean anything back then.

I could be mean and say, Best before 1967 like an expiration date...to be honest, and it's a habs fan saying this, Toronto did have some pretty good seasons post 1967, but yeah, 2006 to 2012 was atrocious to see...I bet it was not fun being a Leafs fan at that time, no pure franchise players and some atrocious contract...Thank god you can be competitive now ! Another Harold Ballard story: In the mid seventies, one of the best face-off men in hockey was a young player by the name of Doug Jarvis. Roger Nielsen tipped off Scotty Bowman about him, saying that he was better on the face-off than Bobby Clarke (he was). However, Toronto had the rights to Jarvis, and Montreal wanted him. Jarvis was a Christian. So, knowing how much Harold Ballard disliked Christians (once saying that he didn't want such people in his building), Montreal made sure to Jarvis's religious beliefs to Ballard, and so easily prevailed on Ballard to trade Jarvis even up for Greg Hubick. Jarvis went on to help Montreal win 4 Stanley Cups in a row, won the Selke trophy, and the Masterton trophy, and 2 more Stanley Cups as an assistant coach and set a record for most consecutive games played by any player. Hubick played 6 games in the NHL before his NHL career was over.

To think that the Leafs had two defencemen in McCabe and Kaberle who finished the 2005-2006 season with 68 and 67 points respectively, and still couldn't squeak into the playoffs... Such wasted potential.

About goalie, people might talk in the past about Andrew Raycroft vs Tuuka Rask...He was good, statistically it was logical ! Also, i felt they were just bad lucky at a point...Jonas Gustavsson the monster and Vesa Toskala were pretty good with great potential...Hell even Jonathan Bernier had a great chance but i feel he spent to much time as backup with the King...What do you think ? Did one had a chance ?

A lot of agony for sure. I remember going to a Leafs vs. Sharks game at the end of the 2014-15 season at ACC. Never going to forget it, it was just awful. Not only the play but just the atmosphere, a culmination of past and present failure with seemingly nothing to be optimistic about at all. A lot of the players and picks traded away were a result of trying to put a bandaid on really serious problems and the Leafs paid for it.

Can you explain why Ron Ellis was on the board, he was my favorite player growing up, and a tremendous two way player who had good numbers but I guess just a notch below the hall of fame or do you think he should be in, I think he was just playing at the wrong time for when he retired they were maybe looking more points total and maybe not the defensive forwards, just my opinion but a solid player nonetheless...

The thing that kept Toronto from getting better for so long wasn't ownership, it was the fans. It didn't matter what the ownership did, the fans kept coming and buying tickets. If they had stayed home and refused to pay for the garbage that the ownership was putting on the ice, they would have had to change. Look how bad the Wings were when Illitch bought them. He was giving away cars to get people in the building. He had to hire better staff, better scouts and build that team into a winner, which he did. The Leafs ownership never had to do that, because the sheep would sell out the building for every game, no matter what. Wearing bags on your heads in the stands still means that you bought tickets.

Imagine thinking a raw goalie prospect like Rask would've developed on the leafs. That trade was literally inconsequential compared to the trading out of first rounders for basically nothing. And just convenient later picks like Josi (taken with a leafs second rounder) are more devastating than losing a goalie who would not have developed on such a bad team

Not a fan of Toronto, but I do respect them and their place in the Hockey Pantheon. Moreover, what chance did the Leafs have with a prat like Ballard at the helm for so long? Sure, they had a worse non-playoff run well after he'd gone. However, he certainly assisted in creating the pressure and expectation which has dogged the Leafs, and turned Toronto into something of a poison chalice. Had Ballard, actually had a brain or not messed with his team, it's highly likely the Leafs with their kick arse rosters could have had 2-4 Stanley Cups during his tenure. This would have lessened the angst of the Leafs coaches, players, and fans in recent years.

The NBA didn't even screw around with the Clippers owner. I'd like to think the NHL would have the balls to remove Ballard these days because he probably should have been then even. I do think owners should have a little more leeway than everyone else but at the same time they should have to answer to and face punishment for much of the same conduct. An example of this I can think of is the Indianapolis Colts owner got in trouble a few years ago for driving while under influence of drugs and he was fined 500,000$ and suspended 6 games, which you may say isn't much but its still a pretty big fine that is bigger than a player would get I am sure. So I like how the owners are not immune to the same rules at least these days.

Surprised you didn't mention the time Ballard almost traded the whole franchise with Edmonton.

You see, the Maple Laughs are a perfect example of why i feel the playoffs should be expanded. Horrible team that would scrape into the dance just to give its fans another few losses to cry over. But that horrible team had piles of kids that just loved them, kids who are not looking at the standings every morning to know how bad they are, why not give those kids the few extra games. If you expand all of a sudden you get more upsets, more drama, the shootout means less to overall standings, and hopefully you start to move away from teams tanking to win eventually. Teams all of a sudden can build to excel in a tournament system instead of a season grind. Superstars are born in the playoffs, the league needs more superstars let more teams in imo.

Teams are.often exhausted and running on spare parts by the time they make the Final. Adding another round is probably a really bad idea.
