I agree. However, I wonder if people will accept Jesus when they meet him. How will they know? Will they have ideas about who is should be vs who he is? I tend to think the Church has those same issues. They like the idea of Jesus, but not Jesus himself. What he is, how he thinks, etc can be both simple and complex, but the Church seems to reject basic things he was teaching. It is sad. It is much an institution in a bad was as it is the body of Christ. I will simply keep praying for it and those who act within it.

I think you pose some hard questions. However, I tend to think in order to understand it, you must think as God and not man. That is tough and can only be done with Christ. He does call all back to himself and I tend to think he doesn't deny anyone. What is spiritually happening to make this the true body and blood, is truly a mystery that we believe in. However, I tend to think those who don't want to call everyone or deny them a share in Christ want them to do it how they want. I have a hard time believing the discord is coming from the one who went to the cross. I think he is going to tell a lot of us we just don't understand him or the father as well as we should. We follow rules set up by man due to the hardness of hearts, not the lack of charity on Jesus's part. This seems to be in very similar fashion as when Jesus was asked about divorce.

How do I feel about this? Makes me feel sick...it should. If these types of things are not gravely offensive to Catholics, then they don't have a clue what Catholic is. I was remembering yesterday, how when Cardinal Hollerich was offering a Mass in our diocese and we were praying a Rosary outside with signs that pointed out that marriage was between one man and one woman, older ladies were walking past us and "shaming" us. In other words, the aged were going into Mass with this Cardinal and telling us that we were wrong on our view of marriage.

As a convert to Catholicism from the Anglican/Episcopal Church and am the son of an Episcopal priest (I now understand that that title is not valid) I have a few things to say. First, I mixed feelings about this. My father was deeply committed to the reunification of the two churches. It was the logical conclusion of the Anglican Oxford Movement that started in 1833 and featured leaders including John Henry Newman. The Diocese of Pittsburgh (PA) was deeply involved with this movement. In the late 1960’s and 1970’s there were some very serious discussions which fizzled out when Anglican Conferences (think synods) began to ordain women as priests and changed their liturgy to a form very similar to the Novos Ordo. This caused a huge schism within the Anglican Church dividing the traditionalists and the modernist. The group that Pope Francis is talking about is the more orthodox Anglicans ( think the “TLM” of the Anglican Church - ironic isn’t it?). It’s also from this group that Pope John Paul II created the Anglicanorum Coetibus which was whole parishes and dioceses returning to the Catholic Church; it was a great model. The point is that there is a large group of Anglicans that have always wanted to heal the wound caused by that evil monarch in the 16c, but the slow reconciliation process cannot be shortcut by a pope blurting out pronouncements; rather a true return of the Anglican Church ( or a part of the church) can only occur with men of good will working together and seeking forgiveness and reconciliation through the work of the Holy Ghost and and guidance of our Lord Jesus Christ. One cannot heal a gunshot wound with a band-aid 🩹.

What is the difference between Anglican and Episcopal Churches? When I tried to find an answer for this one commentary said there is a wide variation of beliefs (dogma and practices)among the Anglican Communion with some being "virtually catholic" and others being "strongly evangelical ". Why is it the Catholic Church that has to change to accommodate others and to have no dogma at all? But isn't that the goal of a Synodal Church? I believe that a church without clear consistent teaching is no church at all...simply chaos!

The Church of England is the original "Anglican" church. The English settlers and colonists took the Church of England with them where they settled in North America, Australia, New Zealand, etc. The British Empire also brought Church of England missionaries to Africa and India and many other countries. When those countries (beginning with the US) became independent, it became necessary for their Church of England members to become independent, too (since, as the name says, the Church of England is a national church anyway). The Church of England in the 13 Colonies was then called the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States. The Episcopal Church is the historic Anglican church in the US, in communion with Church of England and the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Scottish Anglicans also call themselves the Scottish Episcopal Church because "Church of Scotland" refers to the main Presbyterian body, and also because the Scottish Anglicans are not directly dependent on the English Church. When the Episcopal Church in the last 50 years began so many innovations, several groups that described themselves as "Continuing Anglicans" formed their own bodies, to carry on Anglican belief and worship as it had been before the changes. They usually used the term "Anglican" so as not to be confused with the now very liberal Episcopal Church. These traditionalist Anglicans are in the Anglican Communion something like the SSPX. The largest traditional Anglican group in the US is the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) though there are several others. In short, Episcopalians are Anglicans but have mostly gone very liberal and modernist. The Anglican Communion is a worldwide federation of national churches, in communion with the Archbishop of Canterbury. Parts of that Communion are traditionalist and are at odds with their own hierarchies. African Anglicans are very traditional, for the most part. There are conservative Episcopalians, but they are very beleaguered and likely to merge eventually with the more traditionalist Anglican groupings outside the recognized Anglican structures. Actually, much of that has analogies with the Catholic Church today.

But since David Cameron, the Prime Minister just automatically forwards to the King for approval of the names submitted by the Crown Appointments Commission, which is entirely Church of England. The British government is too indifferent to take an interest anymore. The quality of the C of E bishops is entirely the making of the Church of England's own ruling circles. Neither King nor Parliament forced these doctrinal and moral changes on the Church of England. And, to be fair, Catholic bishops have often been nominated by temporal rulers. In overwhelmingly Catholic societies and Catholic states, that could be a good thing. It was certainly that way in Spain until the 1960s. And right now, the CCP appoints the Catholic bishops in China, with papal approval. I'm afraid that we don't have much room to criticize the Anglicans on this matter.

Eventually, unrestrained ecumenism devolves into meaninglessness, because we're only empowered to ignore or to set aside our differences, but we cannot restore unity simply by doing that. One position or the other must abandon its place and adopt the other as its own.That's incontrovertible biblical truth. Jesus didn't come to condone continuing error, but repentance of it, which is the abandonment of sinful practices to pursue a different position. Francis is recapitulating the error which Jesus convicted the Pharisees and Sadducees of; by the traditions of man, he denies the power, justice, and eternal integrity of the law those traditions claim to be built upon.

The issue with apostolicae curae is that the break in episcopal apostolic succession amongst anglicans was put down to an ordination rite which didn't have a full enough mention of the sacrificial priesthood. While this was certainly true in the very early days of the post-reformation english church, by 1662 the ordinal was amended to be far more catholic, though perhaps lacklustre in comparison to the tridentine rite. Then comes along the novus ordo ordination rite, which itself doesn't really stand up to Leo XIII's requirements for validity. Along with the infusion of old catholic orders, to me this leaves the only logical conclusions being Apostolicae Curae being incorrect, or Rome having no valid ordinations since V2. Troubling times!

For me as a convert the most significant thing missing from Protestant denominations is the need for confession, penance & reconciliation. Protestants accept that God forgives, but they can keep their sins to themselves. So how can any tradition be in "full communion" with the Catholic Church without accepting and participating in the crucial sacrament of confession, penance & reconciliation? It appears we will soon be able to simply wish sin away.

Wow. Around when I first became Catholic I was also invited to an Anglican Church by my young daughter’s friend. My girls really liked the Sunday School there so I would take them. Sometimes, I think this happened two weeks in a row, I only went to the Anglican Church. My heart is flattened at the thought that I did this. By the end of those weeks I was so starving. I learned for myself that the Anglican Eucharist is NOT the same as the Catholic Eucharist. Also I had a friend who is now becoming a cloistered nun and she told me quite strongly that I cannot receive the Anglican Eucharist. I didn’t get why but after thinking about it a LOT I realized she is right. One thing is that by receiving it I am saying to the people around me that it’s ok, that they don’t need the Catholic Eucharist. I am just, I don’t have the word, astounded that they might recognize Anglican priests as valid priests. I know they’re good guys, and know the Lord very well, but they are not priests like Catholic priests.

New Ordo holy orders are valid or else the Church would have defected. There have been quite a few Eucharistic miracles since the changes. Anthony, I became a Roman Catholic at Easter 2005 just before the death of John Paul II, in a Novus Ordo parish. I didn't even realize there was a difference. I was around 50 at the time. I converted from Lutheranism because I knew that I had lived a very sinful life, and I believed that only the Catholic Church, through Confession, had the authority to forgive and release me from my sins, as declared by Our Lord Himself. It has been a struggle...learning to submit to various dogmas that I once would never have believed before. Don't get me wrong, I still struggle and fail, but there is Mercy and Help. The problem is, after all that has gone on over the last years since the abdication of Benedict, I am having real doubts as to whether I even became a true Catholic because, uneducated as I am, I can now see that there is a real rupture between the Church before Vatican II and that after. The question is, is the rupture sufficient to have separated the post Conciliar Church from the pre-Conciliar Church? And if it is, what are "Catholics" like me supposed to do if they want to be "true Catholics?" This is a struggle I face every day...God bless...
