From Wikipedia:
The Francis Scott Key Bridge is a steel arch continuous through truss bridge spanning the lower Patapsco River and outer Baltimore Harbor / Port carrying Maryland Route 695 between Hawkins Point, Baltimore and Dundalk, Maryland, United States. The crossing between Baltimore City and Baltimore County also passed through a small portion of Anne Arundel County. It was originally known as the Outer Harbor Crossing until it was renamed in 1976, while still under construction, and was also known as simply the Key Bridge or Beltway Bridge. The main span of 1,200 feet (366 m) was the third longest span of any continuous truss in the world. It was the second-longest bridge in the Baltimore metropolitan area, after the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
The bridge was opened on March 23, 1977, named for amateur poet Francis Scott Key (1779-1843), the author of the American national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner". The bridge was the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor, two tunnels and one bridge. Once completed, the bridge structure and its approaches became the final links in Interstate 695, the "Baltimore Beltway", completing a two-decade-long project. Despite the I-695 signage, the bridge was officially considered part of the state highway system and designated Maryland Route 695.
The bridge was 8,636 feet (2,632 m) long and carried an estimated 11.5 million vehicles annually. It was a designated hazardous materials truck route. HAZMATs were prohibited in the Baltimore Harbor and Fort McHenry tunnels.
The Key Bridge was a toll facility operated by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA). As of July 1, 2013, the toll rate for cars was $4.00. The bridge was part of the E-ZPass system and included two dedicated E-ZPass lanes in its toll plaza in both the northbound and southbound directions. In April 2019, MDTA announced that the bridge would become a cashless toll facility by October 2019. With this system, customers without E-ZPass would pay using video tolling. Cashless tolling began on the bridge on October 30, 2019.
The main spans of the bridge were destroyed on March 26, 2024, when the container ship MV Dali crashed into one of its support pillars.

I remember in my memories of living in Baltimore county where I was able to see this bridge from a distance, but now once I go to revisit those exact locations where I used to see the view of the bridge, nothing will be there. Terrible disaster. This reminds me of the 1980 collapse of the Sunshine Skyway in Tampa, FL. That occurred when severe weather caused a ship to go off course and crash into a support beam of that bridge. 35 souls were lost that day, and the bridge was rebuilt in 1987 with concrete dolphins to protect the bridge from future collisions.

Same thing with WTC, I always wanted to take my kids and I’m like… who the hell wants to go that far downtown just to see another observation deck. @@farmcat3198 it honestly wouldn't be a bad idea... Just be costly and take longer to build than a bridge. Maybe a bridge-tunnel would be slightly quicker/cheaper than a full on tunnel. We have 3 of these bridge-tunnels in Hampton Roads (other end of Chesapeake bay).

@@kenelkins1787 That would be the main issue. As bad as a hazmat accident would be, it would be worse in a tunnel. If there’s any silver lining (and I use the term loosely) is thank god it wasn’t at 5pm or 8am peak hour bumper to bumper traffic that had no where to go.

I worked a travel nursing job through the fall and winter in Southern Maryland and would come home to Essex MD every weekend via this bridge. Eastbound just like this. You would see it in the distance, it would disappear and then reappear huge and majestic. I always got a little thrill seeing it. Can't believe it's gone.

It's tragic and terrible that this happened but I am thankful for the preservation of this bridge's history in video form. My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to the families of all lost as well as those whose lives will be disrupted as a result of the loss of not one but two major corridors as a bridge like this is truly an intersection of the road above and the water under it. Thank you for preserving and uploading this Mike!

Lived in Edgemere for 23 years and drove this bridge all the time. Still in shock its gone. There was a lady stopped in the right Eastbound lane at the top of the span once. I pulled up behind her, she had a flat tire and was just sitting there. I told her she needed to move to bottom of bridge and I would change her tire. Just like that there was an MTA officer pulled up and was like, we need to get off the bridge before we get hit. He escorted her down and I changed her tire. RIP to those 6 road workers just doing their job! 😥

You know what. In this world, I’d have expected people to have a fit about you posting a video like this on the same day as the collapse, saying that it was disrespecting the dead or something like that. Instead, I am pleasantly surprised that people are commending you for it. Makes me hopeful for humanity a bit. RIP those lost.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I always shiver when I drive across some of the area bridges. I feel safe on the Golden Gate Bridge. However, I always feel a bit of concern driving over the Richmond-San Rafael, San Mateo-Hayward and Dumbarton bridges. For some of them (or for some stretches), the support pillars remind me of the Key Bridge.

Wow, thanks for sharing. Im not from the U.S, nor do I live there. This video helped me understand and put into perspective just how big this bridge really was. Visually this bridge reminds me of a couple bridges that im more familiar with. To an extent the Key bridge looked a little bit like the Auckland Harbor bridge in New Zealand and the Sydney Harbor bridge in Australia, combined together. Very sad and unfortunate to those that were affected by this tragic disaster. They all may rest in peace.

This will now be up there with all those home video posts of tourists entering and exiting the Twin Towers of The World Trade Center. Here one day, demolished the next. After seeing this video, I find it even more impressive how quickly they stopped traffic to the bridge in such a short period of time. I wonder if there were other construction workers that were positioned near the entrance on each side of the bridge that were able to stop traffic so quickly.
