You know what, great respect to you for posting this video after the unfortunate events that occurred in the middle of the night. I remember in my memories of living in Baltimore county where I was able to see this bridge from a distance, but now once I go to revisit those exact locations where I used to see the view of the bridge, nothing will be there. It’s just a heartbreaking event, and I feel for the Baltimore natives who basically lived off driving across the FSK Bridge.

Truly, I miss this bridge. I used it to visit family out of town, and on the way back, it was a beacon saying, "welcome home." When I saw its high, sweeping arch in the distance, I knew that I didn't have that much longer to drive. Unlike the cramped, crowded tunnels, the Key Bridge was lofty and free, giving you a long look over the Bay and sense of what Maryland is to those who live here. It will be missed. Thank you for making and posting this video.

With respect , @coreysmith8560 is actually correct. The 'Mayday ' signal gave the Maryland Transportation Authority Police enough time to shut it down (a radio call was released). Utilizing speculation as empirical evidence essentially removes the smallest amount of credibility that is likely possessed by those with the intellectual depth of a thimble full 9f water. Always double-check facts, it makes your argument stronger, although I would surmise that the Grand Canyon would take some work to fill....

Terrible disaster. This reminds me of the 1980 collapse of the Sunshine Skyway in Tampa, FL. That occurred when severe weather caused a ship to go off course and crash into a support beam of that bridge. 35 souls were lost that day, and the bridge was rebuilt in 1987 with concrete dolphins to protect the bridge from future collisions.

@warmon6
@warmon6 9 ай бұрын
@@farmcat3198 it honestly wouldn't be a bad idea... Just be costly and take longer to build than a bridge. Maybe a bridge-tunnel would be slightly quicker/cheaper than a full on tunnel. Could still have the issues of ships running into it (taking out road traffic) but it wouldn't block the shipping lanes like this incident caused. We have 3 of these bridge-tunnels in Hampton Roads (other end of Chesapeake bay).
@kenelkins1787
@kenelkins1787 9 ай бұрын
@@farmcat3198A tunnel would have the same issue as the tunnels on 95 and 895. No flammable or hazmat cargo allowed. Trucks carrying such loads would have to drive around the entire city to reach the harbor.
@brodriguez11000
@brodriguez11000 9 ай бұрын
@@kenelkins1787 That would be the main issue. As bad as a hazmat accident would be, it would be worse in a tunnel. Really I suspect they'll get it's replacement up faster than people think partially because the new one will not be that much different than the old. We've come far since the 70's in bridge building (tunnels too).

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I always shiver when I drive across some of the area bridges. I feel safe on the Golden Gate Bridge. However, I always feel a bit of concern driving over the Richmond-San Rafael, San Mateo-Hayward and Dumbarton bridges. For some of them (or for some stretches), the support pillars remind me of the Key Bridge.

After the Sunshine Skyway in Florida collapsed a couple decades ago, they replaced it with a bridge that had redundancy as well as below water diversion barriers. Nobody thinks the same thing can happen in a different location. Why, I haven't a clue.

@@clemsonbloke well since you're focusing on the actual date instead of the changes that were made, it was 1987, not 1980. Took me 5 seconds to find that out.

Lived in Edgemere for 23 years and drove this bridge all the time. Still in shock its gone. There was a lady stopped in the right Eastbound lane at the top of the span once. I pulled up behind her, she had a flat tire and was just sitting there. I told her she needed to move to bottom of bridge and I would change her tire. Just like that there was an MTA officer pulled up and was like, we need to get off the bridge before we get hit. He escorted her down and I changed her tire. RIP to those 6 road workers just doing their job! 😥

Vietnam? That bridge was opened in 1977, well after Vietnam. Vietnam was over in 1975 when Saigon fell to the Communists. The last American combat troops left Vietnam in early-mid 1973.

What's crazy for and what hits me is I just drive across the Key bridge a month ago. I normally drive through the tunnels when heading north, but will the take Francis Scott Key bridge when I drive up 301/50 to 97. The view from the bridge was amazing and seeing it from 95/895 made it dominate the skyline. I will really miss driving across it. If there is any consolation, at least death toll was low. For me, any deaths are too many deaths.

I admit, that is a scary bridge that I would have a panic attack crossing. No shoulders, a steep uphill climb, really high above water, a steep downhill descent, and only two lanes. My prayers for the people working or crossing the bridge during the accident, and for their families and loved ones.
