As a Brit, one very, very important detail that is rather cavalierly passed over here is that the Royal Navy provided naval protection to the Nationalists as they were ferried across the straits of Gibraltar to Algercias. The battleship Queen Elizabeth amongst other vessels prevented the Republican navy from interdicting this movement of troops, and this had a direct effect on the course of the war. Furthermore, both the UK and the USA (and France, actually) provided material support to the Nationalists at different points in the war. The Civil War is often painted as fascists versus communists, when in reality, it was fascists and conservative democrats vs liberal democrats and communists vs anarchists. Everybody had skin in the game, and the Allied powers decided that a communist Spain was worse than a Fascist Spain - this was at the same time as British ministers were describing Hitler as a 'bulwark against communism', and British intelligence was feeding information to the Germans about the Soviet intervention in Spain. Like practically every war in the 20th Century, every side was guilty of some iniquity, and best practice was not what was right, but what was expedient.
@Cornerforward4 жыл бұрын
I have recently started educating myself on the Spanish civil war. Are you saying here that not only the Nazi's and Mussolini's fascists supported Franco's African troops to land at Algecirus (from Morocco) but also the Royal Navy ? Might this be why Franco never moved on Gibraltar ?

Franco was the best dictator of the 1930's, without question. When Hitler and Mussolini forged their alliance, Franco was wise enough to stay neutral in the coming war. While he embraced Fascism, he never trusted Hitler, despite the fact that the Furher sent troops to aid him during the Spanish Civil War. When the Nazis occupied France in 1940, Franco not only allowed hundreds of thousands of French Jews to escape to Spain, but also provided them safe passage to Portugal, and eventually, the United States. Moreover, he fought against Communism, took charge of a nation that was headed for decline, only to transform it into a powerful, sovereign and stable country that Spain remained until his death. Shortly before he died, Franco welcomed back the Spanish Royals, on the condition that they did not restore the monarchy while he was still alive. He also added lyrics to La Marcha Real. If I had to choose which dictator I would gladly live under in the 1930's, I would choose him instead of Hitler, Mussolini, Tojo, or Stalin. Viva Espana!

Franco gave a list of all Jews in Spain to Hitler. I lived in Hawaii from 1990 when the push & pull of where his corpse should go was going on. Imelda and her shoes were the butt of jokes by young Filipinos and Americanos. Some middle aged Ilocanos thought he was a swell fella. Eventually Imelda went back, and maybe his corpse.

A documentary here in Spain explained how Franco insisted on having a medical operation performed in his palace, not the hospital. He insisted and pulled rank and had an operating theatre set up at his home. During the operation there was a power cut, not uncommon apparently, which left the medical team in the dark leading to Franco's demise.Had he been operated on in hospital there would have been a power backup. Knowing best, pulling rank can backfire.

Spain joined NATO in 1986, not in 1953. My take on Franco and Hitler is that Franco, a Catholic and deeply so with his marriage, was well aware that National Socialism was viscerally anti-Catholic. He intended to stay out of the world war. Asking for chunks of French Morrocco would have forced Hitler to chose between France and Spain. As you record, Hitler did not appreciate his meeting with Franco.

You should do a Geographics of El Valle de los Caídos. I found it slightly disturbing to gloss over the “rumors” of the use of slave labor of incarcerated dissidents in the process. It’s fairly well established and a part of official tours. I think highlighting Dalí or Picasso could be interesting. One of my main studies in university (I lived in Spain at the time) was literature of the Spanish Civil War. There are so many fascinating figures in the conflict and the many years after, but unlike the artists they’re not well known and I think garnering sufficient interest would be challenging. Other ideas would include a Biographics of Garcia Llorca or a Geographics of Lavapiés in Madrid as well. Ooh. Or the history of ETA, especially the clemency offered to the more mainstream portion of the movement leaving the organization to the relatively more radical fringe portion etc. It’s such an interesting history to delve into.
@ProteoEuthismos Жыл бұрын
Regarding El Valle, is true. But if you look the lists of prisoners there, they were the priveleged ones, with many amenities. They could bring their families. So it was kinda of a privilege to be there. Some say the working conditions were horrible, but in reallity, they were the same conditions as a civil contruction. Regarding literature and all that, remember that Franco allowed leftist in the Universities, so todays culture is Heavily influenced by those leftists, and they are still hurt by the war, even today. Look for example Almudena Grandes. She called her book series "the unresolved war"... Yeah.
