Talk about God-like defending. The man is playing with an injury on a superhot pitch, against the best team in the world, reading every ball, breaking down every Brazil attack, jumping in the way of every cross, covering every blade of grass at the back, in midfield and on the attack. A loyal, one club, one country man, Franco Baresi is the best defender there ever was.

That's the problem with some other people, they always thought that defending is all about tackling, getting the ball out of the offense but that's not it. It's the ability to read the game, when to and not to execute a tackle. Like the great Maldini (Franco Baresi's mentee) said “If I have to make a tackle then I have already made a mistake.”. LESSON ON ITALIAN FOOTBALL Listen to me: italian style is not pure "defensive" but "waiting", in sense that we leave the ball at the opponent and we wait him to prepare counter-attack. THIS ISN'T BUS-PARKING or SURRENDER TO ATTACK. Bus-parking is not-italian exaggeration of italian style (Greece 2004, Chelsea 2012). Our style approves the presence of many strikers, includes collective actions and has produced the most spectacular matches in football history. It's a balanced mixture of strenght (defence), velocity (midfield) and technique (attack). It's had various phases, more or less defensive: 30s-50s = METODO (method) = 2 defenders more than english System // invention of Regista, a backward n°10 (like Pirlo) = 2 World Cups 60s-70s = CATENACCIO ("door-bolt") = one-on-one defence // invention of Libero (sweeper): an other regista, an attacking player, BEHIND THE DEFENCE LINE // only 2 attacking players (playmaker + striker) = 1 Euro Cup - 2°place WC 70s-80s = ZONA MISTA (mixed zone) = zone defence with single one-on-one against important players (ex: Gentile vs Maradona) // midfield more offensive // more strikers = 1 World Cup - 3°place WC - 4°place WC - 4°place EC 2 times 90s-2000s = ATTENDISMO ("waitism") = zone defence // midfield less offensive // only 2 strikers = 1 World Cup - 2°place EC Parenthesis of Sacchi (2°place WC) and Prandelli (2°place EC, the current) with change of philosophy = ball possession and making of play. But traditonal features survive however. Often "catenaccio" is used by haters just like insult with "mafia" and "spaghetti". Don't confuse "catenaccio" with THE BEST DEFENSIVE TRADITION OF THE WORLD, with the best legends of defence (ZOFF - ZENGA - BUFFON - BURGNICH - FACCHETTI - SCIREA - GENTILE - BERGOMI - BARESI - MALDINI - NESTA - CANNAVARO...). Respect for other cultures (Passing Game, Tiki-Taka, Total Football, Futebol Bailado...). STUDY FOOTBALL HISTORY, NOT FIFA-NIKE SPOTS. Italy * * * *

This has to be put in context, because it gives even more merit to what Baresi did. Romario and Bebeto were CRUSHING their opponents, look at what they did to Netherlands and Sweden, they couldn't be stopped. Romario at his best was an extremely gifted player and a cold-blooded killer inside the box. He made the best centre-backs throughout his career look silly, even Franco Baresi, in a Milan X PSV Champions Cup match. He was at his peak. And yet, with all that, Baresi, coming from knee surgery, was able to stop him. That was, for me, the greatest defending display of the history of the World Cup. He was flawless.

El manejo de cintura que hace Baresi en el minuto 2:25 es impresionante, recomiendo verlo en velocidad lenta. Va prediciendo todos los amagues de Romario hasta tal punto que lo obliga a ir a estrellarse con la pierna derecha de Baresi a pesar de venir en carrera el brasileño y el italiano retrocediendo. as an italian Juve fan, this was the greatest individual defense performance ever......it seemed incredibly to watch it live, especially considering he was lined up hastily after a surgery during the carrying out of the tournament!! 35 year old, against Brazil, in a WC final, playing under the sun at 2 pm in a hot California summer day .....just insane
@kennyblack13494 жыл бұрын
You need to think about this seriously, if Harry Mcguire is worth £80 million how much would Franco cost you in today's market ? He is probably the greatest defender I have seen in my lifetime. What a player truly legendary
@GreatBritishBeast2 жыл бұрын
Baresi is better at passing, dribbling, agility, awareness, so 4 times the player Maguire is. So 320 million. I.e Mbappe figures, but for a defender.

My friend the problem here is to pay 90 million euros for McGuire, Manchester United seems to be managed by brainless people. I know that the Premier League has been the best championship for at least 10 years and therefore manages to generate more money than the others, but if you then throw away the resources in this way it would make you cry (I think United fans will agree). Speaking of Baresi's price in today's football, I think it would exceed the price of Van Dijk hands down (who if I'm not mistaken is the most expensive defender ever). even if this is a video of a match from 30 years ago, where you also see Baresi shooting the ball as far as possible (which is never done today), you can see that this player is not only a monster in terms of defense pure, but he also has the technical qualifications and ball touch of a modern defender, as well as going twice as fast as the others. Van Dijl only has height compared to him, otherwise there's no match...

Not only was he able to defend but he could score goals as well.The man is a beast and the greatest defender there will ever be.Players of today wouldn't stand a chance getting past him.

He's the greatest defender of all time as far as I'm concerned. His anticipation, positioning and marking skills were superhuman. He was also a fantastic footballer, with great vision and good turn of pace. He could have easily been an equally great full back or central midfielder.

@zosoilrelucertola6 жыл бұрын
Luca Francesco Delucca bravo!!! I veri difensori si vedono quando corrono all indietro. I difensori moderni mi fanno ridere.

I want to point out to everyone that that was Brazil... I think that playing against such a defensive phenomenon, (he seemed born specifically to do that given the naturalness he had in playing), must have been a nightmare for the offensive players of the other teams . Incredible!!

It's a shame that Baraesi and other legendary defenders from his area aren't talked about more. There is always talk about the next Maradona, Messi, or cristiano but there is never talk about the next Baraesi, why? Defense is 50% of the sport and deserves the respect it deserves.

Baggio-Baressi, players like you made me a staunch supporter of Italy. Even when surrounded and badly outnumbered by England supporters in Canadian pub. I was in my Italy jersey shouting and cheering for Italy. And all this passionate love and support I have for Italy roots back to Azzuri players like you I grew up watching in my childhood. Thank you for being you! Forza Italia! 🇮🇹 - An Indian from Canada

It's great knowing that there are classy fans like you out there supporting my beloved Italy. Even though I have really enjoyed the last two weeks, the penalty shootout exits in 1990, 1994 and 1998 will forever haunt me. To see my all time favourite players in Baggio and Baresi go through that torment after all their great, almost miraculous, performances, never ceases to knock the stuffing out of me. I have lost count of the number of times I have replayed that final in my head, throwing in all the "what ifs".
