WARNING! PURISTS, PLEASE EXIT THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY! You have been warned.
I don't know if this man had an undiagnosed mental illness or what...I'm not a purist, and even I find this a little...over the top? High Db? On this?? Just listen and see what I mean. Post your comments, tell me what you think...I think it's ridiculous.
But we can't deny, that man had a great top. And that little showing off at the end was very impressive, even though uncalled for. I still prefer Tauber and Schmidt in this operetta...what about you? I know for a fact Josef Schmidt could have done exactly the same thing when he sang this...but THANK GOD he didn't.
This is a live concert in Germany, 1985...apparently there were no purists in the crowd that day, as you will hear from the more than welcoming applause 'Il pazzo' recieves.
Correction: Db, not D.

Regardless of what anyone may think about his mental health, Bonisolli had guts. He was so confident in his voice and his abilities. Most people don't recognize that in a concert performance like this a singer is fully exposed to his audience, with none of the props or supporting cast to cover over mistakes and cracks. To take such a chance in singing a high D-flat at the end of such a loved aria or song takes tremendous courage and confidence. Sure he had vocal faults, but he gave his all in every performance, and that's why audiences loved him. No one like him today!

GermanOpera Singer

This was an encore for a concert in vienna. Well sung with an amazing high ending.....interesting that the beautiful diminuendo at the ends of some of the phrases and general wonderful singing at the end of a massive recital, have completely been ignored by the person who posted in favour of ridiculing one of the most important tenors of our age - mental illness- no....just exuberance of a singer who couldn't help but entertain ...the more the crowd cheered the more he gave. Well, this concert took place in Vienna in 1986 and it was organized by private friends. This aria was Franco´s way to say "thank you" to the crowd. Music is emotional. Franco was very emptional, sometimes too much. But he did what he could to satisfy the people- in every performance. Maybe some are jealous cause their favorite tenors could not sing like Franco did.

If you are not a singer , you cannot know what it is to go out in front of 3000 people and lay it on the line. Don't you wish we had his kind on the scene today? Enjoy it without the judgement. I know Franco is a divisive tenor, breeding heated discussions of love and contempt. All opinions aside, the fact that he does create such controversy reminds us how unique he was. Whatever he was, no one else was like him and for that reason I keep returning to him like a breath of fresh air from the "standard" lot of tenors. I appreciate the confidence and fire in his soul that many singers today lack. There is something intoxicating about a man that sings with abandon... No care of critics or boundaries. For better or worse, who can say? But NEVER boring.... never...

The Sheldon Cooper of opera! Totally crazy but a musical genius! The man had no vocal bad habits and what is the harm of singing an unwritten high d-flat at the end? The great song is after all written by Lehar and tailored for Richard Tauber who didn't have more than an adequate b-flat top. If the aria is ended down alla Gedda, etc., that's fine but really here the high d-flat is every bit as appropriate as the long string of tenors who recorded the piece with lower big finishes. Music, even great music must be entertaining as well as inspiring. He didn't even melt down here!

He didn't have a mental illness. Part of his personality is just he's Italian! And why should everyone be the same? It's beautiful that he was such a unique man, and one of the greatest tenors of all time. And I mean, the crowd goes nuts for the D flat! And the rest of the aria is absolutely beautiful!! I can't see how anyone would have fault with this rendition, though I understand having a soft spot for the original rendition(s). I know that in my mind no one will ever sing certain songs better than my favorites, even though many have sung those songs as good if not better if I was listening without bias. My 2 cents.

A terrific voice, undisicplined at times but he had great range. Love him or not anyone that saw him preform can't deny that he was exciting. His electrifying, powerful and high energy performances are legendary. To the purist Bonnisoli will be remembered as a showoff but to the casual observer he sounded great. He may have added some extra highs of his own BUT in the upper register he was quite at home. Few could hit the highs with the ease that Franco did.

BTW while your tearing Franco to shreds with YOUR opinion , i'm surprised you didn't post the " Lamento di Federico" in which his voice wobbled so bad and cracked, he then recovers and hits an amazing B natural . Then does Di Quella Pira twice back to back perfectly for the encore.

At least in German. I don't know much about him or his career, but an Italian tenor singing in German is really something. For a split second when he was going up to the high D it almost sounded like Schmidt. Not necessarily over the top, he was just showing off a little at the end. I liked Tucker singing this but I don't think he ever did in German. For German versions I like Schock's, which also had a higher note than written at the end (but not a D, maybe a B or C, I don't remember).

I agree that Pavarotti's C was by no means the best C when compared with tenors like Gedda, Kraus, Lauri Volpi, Filippeschi, Baum, Bonisolli, et al. but his C was just as good as any other note in his upper register. He had a very consistent sound in the top from F# to Db (in his prime). He was not a C tenor, no, but he had a very good C. Bjorling also.
@Agorante
@Agorante 15 жыл бұрын
And you too are right. The title "King of the High Cs" was invented by Herbert Breslin his publicist. A lot of people seem to take that title too seriously. Baum should have been called "King of the High Cs - and Little Else". That's what I meant. Pavarotti could sing high or low, soft or loud, sweet or clairion. That's why he was a success, not because of his C.

Well, I have to admit the high D (or Db) was terrific, although at other times it could be a bit dicey (check out his Rigoletto aria). However, for this aria I agree with Schmidt and Tauber as 2 of the best. I would also include Gedda for an his mastery of beautiful tone, perfect style, and dynamic control. He did not do the high Db, although he had the best high notes in the business. There is a posting of him doing this later in life with his technique and voice still beautifully intact.

The high C may not be appropriate in the operetta, but this is a recital. He is not playing the part in the operetta here, so why not give the audience the high C that the audience and he himself both loved? It's gorgeous, and it does make sense considering the circumstances.

Bjoerling ducked the top Cs when he was old and sick just as Pavarotti did. Jussi had a heart failure episode just before the curtain of Faust at the Met in his last year alive. He went on and sang a wonderful High C. This is a famous recording. It is described in Merrill book. He should be forgiven for ocassionally skipping a few Cs. Bjoerling vocalized up to an F. He sang Arnold on stage (alas only in Sweden) something Pavarotti never did.

Bonisolli was a real high note tenor in a way that Pavarotti wasn't. He is connected to the Filipeschi or Esclais traditions. Twenty years ago I used to take the top down and play his Italian song CD. He took all the high options. He would hit the high notes - I would hit the turbo. BTW I don't take that pazzo stuff all that seriously. The other Franco - Corelli - acted crazier when I heard them both live. He just seems exhuberant.

He really did lose his marbles later in his career and was considered impossible to work with but what a voice. I prefer a hot passionate short career to a conventional long bland one (think Rolando Villazon and how exciting he is at this moment). As a musician, I admire performers with discipline and dedication and the ability to perform at their peak well into their old age, but bad boys (and girls) are always more viscerally exciting.

@Agorante it depends on what you mean by a great C if you like the lyric tenor sound it was perfect. corelli has a different voice entirely. tonally pavarotti had the most balanced sound from bottom to top out of any tenor and his technique was flawless. if you just want sheer power for a high C then go with corelli. EVERY voice thins out as you ascend because the chords are stretching to create the pitch, thats part of the physics of the voice. personally i like pavarottis C > any other tenor.

@GermanOperaSinger you're kidding. pavarotti's C's were more legit, balanced and consistant with his voice. i am a fan of both gedda and kraus but their high notes don't compare. kraus's tone goes from a depthless bright sound to completely strident and white on top and ghedda uses mix above C. pavarotti had better tone throughout his voice that all those tenors combined, only bjorling and bonisolli come close in my opinion for color and similarly sized instrument.

Okay, I listened to it with as open a mind as I could. My two cents? It may not be kosher, but it sounded good. It was not terribly jarring, in my opinion. For a live concert, rather than an archival studio recording, I don't see the harm. Personally I found Birgit Nilsson's high note at the conclusion of "Wien, Du Stadt Meiner Träume" infinitely more inappropriate. watch?v=wjnQEpOPdyQ Listen and see if you don't agree. I can't help laughing each time I hear it.

Franco, you are the best! I can't hear anymore this song without listening to Franco's finale. What a tenor! Just watch Piotr Beczala nice rendition, and doubt he could have pul this off. Matter of fact, who? Only Franco, the man above reason, not below, no "pazzo", you little people, Il Grande. Si signore, Il Grandissimo!

When you have notes like these, it is far from "inappropriate" to include them! Rather hear Domingo cr-r-r-a-a-ck wide open on notes further down the scale? That made him a "musician"??? In shares roles, Bonisolli was better by far than PD!!!

Corelli of course had a much more baritonal sound than Pavarotti. When I heard him in recital he probably never sang above a G in the first half of the concert. But he regularly sang the extreme acuti. He has recordings where he sings the D above High C. He was studying Arnold just before he retired. He sang Poliuto early. Live Pavarotti's Pira was not very impressive. The voice thinned out at the top. His top C didn't make much impact. Pavarotti had a great voice but not a great C.

@bigus No, no, no. Don't give me that relativist hokum. I said Pavarotti's pira wasn't much in the theater. In the theater the cabaletta is supposed to cap the scene. It is supposed to be exciting. It wasn't. It was disappointing - ask anyone who was there. BTW Kraus was fine live up to C. But the voice spread badly at C sharp. Gedda only sang Fra Diavolo while I was in SF. I skipped it because I didn't like the music. Regrets.

At the time Pavarotti said of his Tonio that he was the the only tenor with "a voice" who could take all the High Cs. That was true then. Lighter voices had always done that part before. But Pavarotti never sang as high as his contemporary Gedda, or even his predecessor Bjoerling. Corelli sang higher too. Pavarotti did sing higher than Vickers, Domingo, or Carreras. Real high note tenors like Filipeschi got away with singing badly by having terrific top notes. Esclais also had an ugly voice.
