There was so much unlimited energy, passion and ring in this version which thanks to you Roberta I am hearing for the first time. I heard him sing this on other occasions, most of them later in his career but never like this. What has always amazed me is that he had such masculine baritone quality in the mid-range and yet a crystal clear top that literally just shook the house in live performances and yet he was equally capable of singing pianissimo when required. He was a truly extraordinary artist and human being. Thank you so much for this.

I was lucky to have lived in New York throughout his Met career, which was long and phenomenal, and saw him in every role, which was almost his whole repertoire. There was no one quite like him. He loved the New York audience and we loved him. I spoke to him a few times and he was sweet and kind to everyone as he signed autographs. His colleagues loved singing with him too. He really was humble. Imagine, a superduperstar humble.
Credo una delle interpretazioni più straordinarie di ogni tempo

Corelli at the height of his powers. In the mid 1950s to early 1960s he was second to none. Unbelievable singing.

in the 60s he's second to none. In the 50s he's second to Mario del Monaco

It's a matter of taste. Del Monaco in the 50s was the best in dramatic opera, Di Stefano the best tenore lirico.. I prefer del. Monaco to Corelli, as I prefer Pertile to almost all tenors

Corelli was an unbeatable Calaf as well as Cavaradossi, but Del Monaco undoubtedly had the upper hand in more dramatic roles like Otello.

Tall, dark, and handsome with a voice that could shake the rafters and melt hearts. Corelli was made for the stage, he had no other purpose in his life.

Incomparable! There is no other word for this artist! Where is Franco's like today? As an opera lover, all we have today are tiny, tinny tenors who sing with no sense of style or passion or sing roles that are totally unsuited for their voices. We were so spoiled for choice in the 1950's and 60's with Corelli, Del Monaco, Bjorling, Bergonzi, Tucker to name but a few.

This is a voice of the utmost beauty applied to an aria of the utmost importance. Chenier is revealed as a messianic figure who emerges from a most unlikely scenario. At this Christmas season 2017 the message is again relevant. I have come not to bring peace but a sword spoke The Christ in his short lived ministry. Change is the one thing the rich, ruling classes never want.

Corelli was Andre Chenier, there will no be other, not ever!
@ransomcoates5464 жыл бұрын
His prime was ten years later. His voice required a lot of work to get it where he wanted. His glory year was probably 1964, by contrast with Tebaldi, whose ‘annus mirabilis’ was 1953.

You can hear the ‘caprino’ he disliked in his voice and worked out of it. The sound got even more exciting when he tightened it up.
