He was scheduled to do at least one more performance and sang the first act of the second performance (with Gail Robinson), cancelled the rest of the performance (replaced by John Alexander), and never sang the role again.

Do you know why?

@@brunoantony3218 Sorry. I was at both performances but it's been 50 years and I cannot remember the reason given for his cancellation. Probably said he became indisposed, but, of course, you cannot always take a statement like that at face value.

@@brunoantony3218 A reason was not given, specifically. I remember some of the announcement, as I was there also. Keep in mind that the second night had Gail Robinson, making her Met debut as Lucia (she did very well). The announcement went something like "Mr. Corelli was not feeling very well, but did not wish to cancel because of the importance of the evening to his young colleague. However he has now had to withdraw. John Alexander will replace Mr. Corelli for the rest of the performance. Thank you for your attention." And the groan was deafening! I missed the first performance with Peters, and I was looking forward to Corelli singing my favorite aria, Fra poco, for weeks. Crushing. Yes, I knew Corelli was already past his prime, but I still went to his performances often, as he was still capable of doing some magic.

It is interesting how Corelli‘s career trajectory manifested itself. As his instrument matured he tried out some, for him, lighter roles more suited to a standard lyric tenor. These assumptions were impressive at times but nevertheless did not, IMO, represent his unique spinto timbre at its finest. I am thinking here of the role of Edgardo which I heard sometime ago but generally well sung as it is I would prefer a timbre of a Carreras, Pavarotti, or Bergonzi. This is a personal opinion, however, I wonder whether, even in the Corelli of the 1950s, roles like Edgardo might have suited other tenors better. Why Corelli made some changes like this in his later repertoire I never inquired about but I wish he had followed through in taking on OTELLO. Various reasons for that & his well known nervousness may have been one of them.
