To people who comment on Franco's facial expression: reflect what an act of courage it is to sing how he does. This is not automatic pilot coloratura -- every note is under Franco's full control -- this is a titanic effort of concentration. That's what it takes. True genius. I have not heard him live, but I suspect his voice is greater in sheer volume than Bartoli's -- although I worship her as well.

Julia I heard him sing the Pergolesi Stabat Mater with Bartoli last year in Salzburg. Their voices meld together in a shockingly beautiful way.

Not to mention that such people have never sung a note in their lives, and have zero idea of what it takes to sing rapid passagework the way Fagioli and Bartoli do.

Your comment is from a year ago, but I have to reply to it. You're coming from a wrong perspective, that what he does is in auto-pilot. If you are a singer, more specifically a baroque singer, you should know that that is not the case, AT ALL. He's focused, indeed, but he's a true performer at the sense that (of course he has years before him of preparation and an at ease with this repertoire, which suits him very well), he's improvising most of the ornaments he's doing there. Yeah, he probably studied and prepared them beforehand, but in an energetic performance like this, going auto-pilot is suicide and it's not excentric and baroque as it can be. Listen to the same arias in different performances, you'll hear most if not all the ornamentation he does is improvised on the go. You have to know your music, you have to have a huge notion of style, you have to be very confident with your technique, and then you just play with the harmony, like any good baroque musician does. There's not this "omg I'll prepare and write down all the ornamentations and cadenzas that I'll do", yeah, if he did that there wouldn't be enough paper for the sheer amount of extra notes and arabesques he sings. Aside from all that makes him a respectable artist, the volatile and imprevisibility are key points to his success with the public. If he did all the same everywhere, people would just buy his CDs and enjoy it from home :).

Also, I've heard him live in a decent sized room, I was front row so I couldnt tell but it seemed like his voice carried. It's a voice that's all about projection not really sheer volume.

the expressions come of the exertions. operatic singing is demanding considerable physical power/strength/stamina/endurance. real.

Bravo !

Unlimited admiration for this performance! And for those who like to compare Franco Fagioli with Cecilia Bartoli, please think about it: Mr. Fagioli is a man - there are differences, also in the voice. Please listen carefully and don't adopt a once widespread opinion without thinking!

Un superbo omaggio all'incommensurabile e inimitabile scuola musicale Partenopea!

I admire any man who sings in high voice. It’s not easy. One way that Franco Fagioli could be better, I think, is that he could stop distorting his mouth so much, as he does here.

В оперном театре его было очень хорошо слышно на самых последних местах. Если делать запись так близко от сцены и оркестр не в яме, а на сцене, звук искажается.

Lets say,,,,he needs the physical moves to get the range of the notes.... and What is amazing about is the fact he can singing all that kind of repertory with full orchestra,,,,,Cecilia NOT, and the worst about cecilia is the FACT the all MOVE is just to SHOW OFF, or let say,,,,make the all thing LOOKS DIFFICULTY, When we know the END is VERY EASY FOR HER....BUT NOT SOUND AT ALL.... REALLY A SMALL SMALL SMALL SOUND.... Beauty line, beauty emotion bla bla bla bla, bla.... but this make you build a carrier by CD's not really a perform..... Is just my opinion, and I no want be take a Cecilia against.... I am intact fan of Cecilia and not of Fagioli...
@guiradobrasil9 жыл бұрын
hyataganh I like them both, I think Fagoli is amazing, and so is Cecilia. I have had the privilege of listening to Cecilia live in one recital with orchestra and in an opera, and both times her sound seemed satisfactory to me and I wasn't seating in the front rows, which cannot be said, for example, of Andreas Scholl, whom I've also heard live twice, both times his voice was ridiculously small, in one occasion he sang Giulio Cesare opposite to Franco Fagioli, who sang Ptolomeu, that was back in 2006, when Franco Fagioli was basically unknown, Fagioli got more applauses at the end than the star Andreas Scholl, deservingly so. Regards from Brazil :-)
@hyataganh9 жыл бұрын
Marcos Guirado I never, never, but never LIKED SCHOLL as "singer", he is musician and boring, have a bunch musician trying became " singers ". I totally agree with you... Fogioli getting more and more my appreciation, in all sense.... Even for one Argentinian, Ops! I am Brazilian too....lets talk more Mister Marcos....
@filippozaccaria69447 жыл бұрын
I think Scholl is perfect when it comes to countertenor repertoire (in particular sacred music), but not when it comes to music written for castrati (he's good but he's not so virtuoso as Fagioli, Cencic, etc.).
