Very cool dude. You made a logic gate. Prior to vacuum tubes arriving on the scene, the world's first computers worked exactly like this.

Good stuff. Watching your channel introduced me to the Acorn, I agree, it’s a great control, easy to set up, just works. Closest low cost controller to a professional control. Even does macros!

Hey Franco, a variation on your theme for wiring the relays... Connect both NC contacts together and connect to common at speed controller. Connect both relay common contacts together Take FWD output from one NO contact and REV from the other NO contact. Works the same, just means you're using both NC contacts instead of one.

spindle sounds lot better now! great info

Think I would have just set up one relay for forward and reverse, and let the other one be a on off one. You cannot have both forward and reverse at the same time if it was the same relay.

I have wired the relays as you described with the wiring. In manual spindle mode i can still activate the relays from forward to reverse without having to press the stop button between spindle direction changes. When programming the code would you have to put an M5 to stop the spindle first? I also have a spindle encoder but havent wired it up.

Just ordered a HF mini mill. Hopefully doing something like this will work for spindle control.

Absolutely love the videos I am planning on doing a conversation myself soon and you have been a lot of help of figuring out what to do but you keep calling the new mill a 278 instead of 728 in the main video headline

Wow - I can't believe I did that! I must be getting dyslexia in my old age.

Hey Franco I just got my pm727v it is gear drive spindle can you share the prototype file for the spindle jam spacer. I really want to try and set my spindle up the same as yours.

Great job explaining - keep it up. Probable have a better encoder setup than an O-ring. Loss count at some point.

Hi I am looking for a mill can’t seem to get a clear direction as to what to buy. I was looking at a Smithy and a PMV

Is spindle forward/reverse in acorn a simple toggle? If so, it's probably logic gated already. It never hurts to have redundancy.

I believe you are correct with your logic gate design. BUT it would have been good to show both relays on at the same time to show the result of what would happen in that case.... say the SEED circuit had a hiccup and asked both relays to turn on together. It should only be in forward direction in that case.

Mechanical relays are just metal contacts. When the contacts hit together and separated they have a little spark. That little spark creates pits in the contact surface as well as leaves carbon buildup. This is why they fail over time. You can usually pop the lids off and clean the contacts with emery cloth for longer life if you’re in a pinch.

Always look forward to your videos. Question: Your Centroid 12 PLC panel looks like it was modified if you are running the latest version. Can you explain?

Hi Franco, Great videos. Are you planning to use a brake for Z axis? do we need to use one?

Is it a bldc motor? There are drives that let you control it through 0-10v. That's most common. If you want to ridgid tap, you need a timing belt. But even as a rpm reader, would never use a oring. There is even a encoder kit for these machines. Keep on going!

Encoder kit? Who sells that?

You've been putting PM-278 on your last 3 videos, might get better search results with PM-728

I feel dumb...but thanks for pointing that out.

How about a more simpler "relay logic". Since these are SPDT relays, NC side would be FORWARD. NO side would be REVERSE. The second relay would send power to the common side of the first relay to give an OFF feature.

To get the forward/reverse switch to work on my lathe with my hybrid stepper motor it was pretty freaky. Forward is +v, reverse is ground, and idle (i.e. no engine brake) is NC. To make it work I had to short out the +5v to ground for reverse, not sure if that's going to kill the stepper driver over time but ran it in reverse for an hour and nothing was overly hot. I could use relays to make the switch work "properly" but it works great the way it is (other than forward/reverse being swapped) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZCudomMeZ2gaKs

Forward and reverse speeds/reactions are controlled by the drive, not Acorn. You can't rigid tap without instant "signal".
