Unfortunately, this isn't a studio recording and not remastered. Enjoyment somewhat limited due to the poor live performance audio quality of Italian TV at that time. To fully appreciate Bastianini's baritone vocal power (velvet) and brilliant sound source: "You Tube: "Eri Tu" Ettore Bastianini, Studio Recording GD, 1961.

Si può discutere su chi sia stato il miglior tenore della storia della lirica...Caruso, Corelli, DiStefano, ecc.ecc. ma per quanto riguarda il ruolo di baritono non ce n'è per nessuno....ETTORE...ETTORE...sempre Ettore, ineguagliabile

I had the privilege of seeing Bastianini several times later in his career. I also was privileged to see Gencer at the Rome Opera in1966. She was a great soprano who understood that opera was not just a concert in costume, as of course, did Bastianini.

If Verdi had written only this one opera he would still have been my favorite composer of all time. Bastianini's early death was a real tragedy. (Try not to look at Gencer's headgear.)

The singing is fabulous! Visually her acting is a bit overwrought! But just listening, it's incredible vocal acting! She's really very special and he's in a class by himself! In my opinion, the greatest Verdi baritone after Warren.

To fully appreciate Bastianini's vibrant sound & large brilliant top range source a studio recording-- You Tube: "Eri tu" Ettore Bastianini, Studio Recording DG 1961. You Tube: Ettore Bastianini, "Eri tu che macchiavi," Mask ed Ball. Without peer. - Gencer very "operatic" high drama but fun to watch.

This movie is really how Trovatore is meant to be - god tier singing all around, passionate, a bit over the top. Also, Del Monaco and Bastianini can believeably pass as brothers.
